Assignment 1: Remaining Questions
2. a) If possible, I would most enjoy recreating Nicole Salimbene’s “When Pressed” (2016)
Tumblr media
b) Needlework has interested me throughout my life, so the use of needle and thread in this piece attracts me to it. While many of Salimbene’s other works include needle and thread, I find this one particularly interesting due to the shapes created by the found ironing board and the stool used. I also enjoy the double meaning implied by the use of the word “pressed” in the title. The ironing board implies pressed clothing, while the tangled thread represents stress, which could also be expressed as feeling “pressed”. I enjoy creating double meanings with words, which is another reason I would like to recreate this piece or something similar. Lastly, I enjoy meticulously arranging objects. which has been done to organize this work and thus would be involved in recreating it. Since i can actually be a very cluttered and messy person, and this makes me feel stressed, I would enjoy the calming sensation of creating something so minimalist and neatly organized.
3. My definition of “sculpture” is any artistic work presented in 3-dimensions.

Assignment #10 - Sound Art
youtube
1) Singing Ringing Tree by Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu is a sculpture in England made of metal pipes that create sounds as the wind blows through them. There are many sculptures like this but I chose this one in particular because the sound is especially haunting and the shape of the sculpture is more symbolic than abstract, resembling a tree. The height and shape make it an almost intimidating, towering structure that inspires awe to see and hear.
youtube
2) Luke Jerram’s Aeolus is another sculpture that uses the wind to make sounds. There are strings between the metal tubes that vibrate. the sculpture has a particularly interesting relationship with light as well as sound. The highly reflective surfaces direct light into the archway and create reflections within the tubes themselves.

Assignment #9 - Matthew Ritchie Questions
a. The writer compares Ritchie’s work to the Big Bang theory of creation. He aims to make his work about all things and events in existence, past, present and future. His work is also quite expansive, reflecting the expansive nature of the universe itself.
b. Ritchie was educated in minimalism, but grew to be inspired by what minimalism lacks. He claims that minimalism is based off of structures and forms, but he wants to create art about content.
c.
Tumblr media
Proposition Player (2003) is one of Matthew Ritchie’s installations that stood out to me both because of the variety of media used and the way the audience participates in it. Each visitor to the installation receives a playing card to carry through the piece. Playing cards play an important role in the extensive story Ritchie creates with his work, corresponding to different characters or aspects of life. They also represent the theme of chance, which Ritchie often refers to in his work.
Tumblr media
Night Drawing (2014) interested me because it is a singular sculpture, which is unusual for Ritchie since he usually makes large installations with many different parts. I admire the complexity of the design and the way it supports itself even though it looks somewhat fragile.

Assignment #8 - Constructed Spaces
1. The main theme connecting all the works in Constructed Spaces was an examination of the way humans build habitats, whether it be for animals or ourselves. Martin Kruck explores the way humans decorate spaces for pets or study specimens, including aspects of "comfort" in their enclosures. He takes photographs of various locations and overlays them in Photoshop to create new images usually including both aspects of nature and aspects of human construction. Similarly, Kim Keever creates his own locations for his photographs, but approaches it in a completely different way. He builds miniature landscapes in aquarium tanks using plaster powder, paint, and mylar sheets, then photographs the surprisingly realistic results. His way of exploring human habitat building is creating the habitats entirely by himself. The other two artists explore aspects of the ways humans build their own homes. Jeremy Coleman Smith believes that people decorate their homes as a way to create self-image. He builds furniture items such as shelves and sinks out of materials such as cardboard, paper, and styrofoam. By making his structures so delicate, he shows an aspect of insecurity or underlying trouble in the home. Curt Ikens focuses on a specific structure found in homes, the wood floor. Inspired by his time installing flooring with his father, he creates pieces out of bamboo floorboards which he stains and scratches to look like weathered parquet flooring. He uses his pieces to explore the use of child labor in building floors.
2a. I found each artist's work interesting in it's own way for different reasons, however the most interesting works were probably Kim Keever's. Both the way that he produced them and the creative products themselves were impressive and provided a lot to think about, like the decisions he would have had to make in creating his atmospheres, or the possible different outcomes he could have gotten from dropping paint into the water, for example.
2b. If I were to use one of these artists' techniques, I would use Martin Kruck's. This is because I have always entertained the idea of creating fantasy locations or scenes out of real photographs. I would probably create scenes with a similar surreal element to his, but also explore the creation of more obviously fictional scenes. Kruck expressed that he wants to make his scenes look familiar, like places that could exist, but I would want to go beyond that.

Assignment #7 - Victoria Vesna Questions
B) Vesna feels that time is a “want” that most, if not all humans possess. Everyone complains of not having enough time, especially in an era where efficiency and productivity are so highly regarded. Additionally she believes that computers mean to save our time but actually take up more of it because of the sheer amount of information they provide. In her work, she aims to counter people’s “loss” of time by creating a sort of space where time is practically nonexistent. In n0time, she has participants create Information Profiles of themselves which then take on their own “lives” transferring information among each other. In this way, the time of the physical person is not being used, yet the information that person knows is communicated and shared. Being able to do this without taking any time transcends the want for time.
C) Two aspects of human behavior that influence Vesna’s work are communication and consciousness. n0time revolves around communication between different information profiles. The profiles cannot really exist without communicating amongst each other. Within this project, Vesna creates a community-centric society. She aims to reveal how even in the physical world “human life is networked”. Vesna also touches on how both art and the internet can alter human consciousness, bringing their presence somewhere else and changing their perception of time. This is another quality she incorporates into her work.

Assignment #7 - Victoria Vesna’s “Mood Swings”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These images show another interactive installation in which participants’ movements are detected and translated into “moods”, or certain combinations of colored light particles and words. There are 7 different states, influenced by Chakras. I thought this work was particularly interesting because of its connection to psychology, which is my own field of study.
