Elio happy rant! He's actually one of the best characters I've ever gotten to experience. He's the perfect example of being an ungrounded spirit. What I mean by that is he's so all over the place emotionally and just so out of it but at the same time he's so self-aware of his own self-made chaos, he's so aware of the hell and torment he created for himself. I just don't know what to say, characters like Elio are rare to come across but they're so emotionally aware, which most people are, but it's so different and I can't put it into words. But here I go and try: Elio talks himself through all of his feeling and internal freakouts 100% aware of when he's "overreacting" but he isn't just absorbed with himself, he's aware of how other people feel as well, so aware that he knows them so well he doesn't have to think of a response that's going to appease them, he already knows. HE's aware that being the youngest people won't listen to him, so he fits as much information as fast as possible into his sentences. Also knowing this he never challenges anyone intelligently besides Oliver, why only him? because Elio is so aware of the game of cat and mouse, they're playing that he has responses that are perfect for the situation, he thinks, thinks hard about what to say.
Elio is just so perfect to me idk!

๐ . โฎ My Intro.แ ' โ ๊ฑ

Welcome to my blog!
HI! My name is Ria/Ellis (call me whatever you'd like!)
I'm a Minor!
Don't let the pink theme fool you, I'm not a Colleen Hoover, "Dark romance" enjoyer (that's actually fetishizing abuse), or a performative reader- same thing goes for movies!
โโโโคMore about me_ โโโโ โ _ โ โโโโ
โ_ My favorite books: Call me by your name, Animal Farm, The Hunger Games, Fahrenheit 451, The Book Thief, They Both Die at the End, and Percy Jackson, X-Men Comics.
โ_ My favorite Films: The Secretary, Dog Days, Moonlight, Mysterious Skin, Final Destination, House of Wax, and The Hills Have Eyes, Thirteen Ghosts, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Baby Driver, Logan, Midsommar, The Lego Movie, How to Train Your Dragon, Parasite, X-men, Before I Wake.
โ_ My favorite TV shows: Hannibal, Grey's Anatomy, Dexter, The Walking Dead, Good Omens, The 100, Everything Sucks!, Schitt's Creek, Shameless, Malcom in the Middle, Modern Family, The Haunting of Hill House, Maid. โโโโค_ โโโโ โ _ โ โโโโ
โโโโคWhat I'll post_ โโโโ โ _ โ โโโโ โ_I'm so tired of the mischaracterization of characters that I'm in fandoms with. Theres a line of having fun and breaking free from the canon with fanon and then there's total ruin like the MHA fandom (obviously no shade (all shade) to them btw).
โ_That being said- I'm going to post rants about the pieces of media I enjoy and how they are trampled all over by the people who consume it. Obviously for clarification, I'm not going to hate just to hate -there is no hating- I will just go into deep dives about stuff I've gathered about them and post about it
โ_I'm also thinking of posting mood boards/collages with some of my favorite characters!
โ_Book Reviews/ Movie reviews
โ_Some of my own work! โโโโค_ โโโโ โ _ โ โโโโ
I follow back!
Thank you for reading my intro post!

Hot take that shouldn't be a hot take:
Elio and Oliver were never in love. I see a lot of people across social media, but it seems like Tumblr is a space where some people grasp the concept of this.
Elio was desperate for validation and to find someone who was similar to him, upon first meeting him he found Oliver as rude;
"I'd never heard anyone use "later" to say goodbye before. It sounded harsh, curt, and dismissive, spoken with the veiled indifference of people who may not care to see or hear from you again." (Aciman pg. 8)
It wasn't until later Elio started feelings a form of "romance" to him, but it wasn't romance at all. Elio said it himself multiple times throughout the book that everyone ignores him and doesn't take his word for anything because he is the youngest, like in most cultures the youngest are made to believe that they are insignificant because they are just mere children in everyone else's eyes.
"I suddenly realized that I didn't want him to see me as I saw myself, as the smallest and weakest and most timid of all creatures. I wanted him to see me as someone who could be near him and not be cowed, not be treated like a child." (Aciman pg. 42)
Elio is shown to have constant overthinking about whether or not Oliver knows that Elio "likes" him, but its confirmed he was aware the whole time, "I knew." (Aciman pg. 80) is what Oliver says after they've slept together.
Elio was simply a boy who didn't want to feel alone, he lived in his little own isolated world due to the social norms, so when he saw someone who finally gave him that drop of attention, someone that he could somewhat relate to, his off the rails teenage boy hormones thought it was love. I am not disproving his bisexuality; I am disproving for those who don't understand that this was never love.
Oliver is another case of his own, Oliver knew he had Elio swooning over him and how hard this boy has fallen for him, yet he's and callous to Elio time after time and becomes formal in his postcards to him. They may have had societal pressure on their back, but even this quote said by Elio just screams to you how disposable Oliver might've seen their "relationship"
"Youโll say something like, 'We had the right chemistry. But you go your way, Iโll go mine. And letโs not pretend weโre more than we were.'" (Aciman pg. 200)
Oliver as well almost never reassures Elio. Oliver tends to be guarded; he even puts off his emotions. Elio is the one constantly seeking signs, decoding glances, reading between the lines. Elio puts in all the work, and Oliver waits for Elio to come to him.
That's all I have to say about this dilemma lolz
