what makes the disc compact?
yo m-
#the disc is closed (since no data is being overwritten) and it is bounded (to the disc drive)#so by heine-borel its compact

#P vs NP falls prey to that same idea of being a relatively simple problem to understand but very hard to solve#its between that and the collatz conjecture for me

Tangent
Not much of a punchline, more like my favorite factoid about tangent. But I'm out of practice! Give me a minute.
#an amazing visualization to add to the unit circle#for all intents and purposes this account believes tan is also a fundamental trig function

consider three apples. now consider what "three" means in the absence of any apples, a three totally divorced from quantity. and consider that when you aren't looking, the numbers fuck each other

I don't think I've ever gotten more whiplash than from opening your blog to see the DC stairs staring back at me omg. hii how are you fellow goose 🪿
honestly, I'm in the same boat since I decided on the applied math part quite late. just wrote amath 250 final today :)
and if I may, Women in Mathematics have a really good directed research program that you can apply to on study terms, which could be a nice setup for MURA or other research positions. I'm planning on doing it as well!
oh best of luck with finals too :>
a fellow pure math + mathphys person! What are you up to these days?
hello friend oh my goodness!! what a cool and amazing choice of major :)
right now I'm finishing up some more applied math requirements, since I started things off leaning into pure math courses. I'm also trying to compile a good "research pitch" for some research ideas (namely, general solutions for 2nd order ODEs).
how about yourself? any fun courses or side projects?

😭 it made a really weird resurgence in 2023 I think so now people just say it, but as a platonic friendly term more than the actual meaning

Some people think the natural numbers should start at zero, and get very worked up about this somehow being the "true", most logical, practical, etc. definition.
Some people think the natural numbers should start at one, and get equally worked up about this being the "true", most logical, most practical, etc. definition.
Unfortunately, to date -- and despite my vigorous letter-writing campaign -- the hidebound reactionaries that comprise the mathematical elite have rejected out of hand my elegant compromise position.
Apparently it "misses the point completely" and "wouldn't make any sense" and "1/2 isn't even an integer".

please don’t block me but since getting into control theory i’ve grown quite fond of the dot notation. we all live with respect to time here. a little dot never hurt anyone
oh god I'd never block someone over this, it's really a joke opinion above all. hi friend :D
unfortunately I don't think it really makes sense to default to time - really, I don't think any differential operator should "hide" the variable of derivation, including Lagrange notation, but I understand the need for a short-form derivative. However, so many physical functions and relations depend on a change in length, which doesn't always scale nicely to time in my opinion, so can make for some ugly higher-order derivatives.
I will say: haven't learned control theory yet, not sure that I'll cross that path in my degree :( so I don't know how useful it probably is and how amazing a shorthand it is for you lol. do what you like! I just don't like the dot because of the aforementioned reasons, and also because it's really easy to accidentally make an errant dot vs. an apostrophe or d/dx. much love <3<3

I've never heard nabla be called del, but my old calc teacher always called the partial del
so is del nabla or is del partial
the internet is being completely inconsistent
my theoretical physics teacher calls nabla del but i've always said nabla
and i swear i've heard someone call partial del??
augh
