All right, i wasn’t going to do this, but i actually got a couple of people asking me about it, so here i go, im going to give a brief explanation of the fuckery behind Kyo Kusanagi.

Bear in mind that altho Street fighter has a bajillion games, technically only 6 games account for the game’s lore, as opposed to King of Fighters that has a whopping 10 games within the main line canon, so the fuckery is not as instant as with bison, so there is a few things to cover.

This is Kyo Kusanagi

Kyo is [at the start of the series] a high school dude who likes to fight, he enters a tournament on japan and uses his totally unfair fire powers to smoke the competition, including incredibly sexy beast girly man Benimaru Nikaido (who fought with equally unfair electric powers) and Goroh Daimon, AKA the most japanese man that ever japaned out of japan. They decided to team up to take the challenge issued by the German billionaire and super villain Rugal Bernstein by entering his King of Fighters tournament as the representatives of Japan.

Kyo eventually beats the german super man because, uh, well did i mention Kyo is the protagonist of the series? Yeah, while KoF was conceived as a way for you to beat up Terry Bogard as Ryo Sakazaki while the guys from Ikari Warriors watch, SNK knew they have a mega franchise in their hands, so they created Kyo to be the hero of KoF, and while the protagonist of future KoF games would change, the reason i am writing this is because the plotlines always revolve around Kyo one way or another.

This is not Kyo

Meet Iori Yagami, Introduced in Kof 95 to serve both as the “ken” of the game and Kyo’s rival, Iori is a man who claims to hate violence but has no problems with beating the ever living shit out of you in a most brutal way, in his debut game Iori practically had the same moves as Kyo: a ground bound proyectile, a dragon punch motion anti air and a three step chain combo move, ironically Iori’s moveset would not change that much through the years and instead Kyo is the one who got an entirely reworked moveset.

Much like Kyo, Iori has flame powers because he’s out there to antagonize Kyo so hard he wears a moon in his back as response to kyo’s sun…oh yeah, also their families have a history that relates to the legend of Orochi, they were all guardians or some shit however the Yagami family blood was tainted by orochi and basically history paints them as dicks, also that fuck up thousands of years in the past would bite Iori back in his ass.

Also he is waaaaay more popular than Kyo.

This isn’t Kyo either

This is Saisyu Kusanagi, Kyo’s old man who serves as a sub boss in KoF 95 for reasons that are vaguely defined and because, can’t get enough of that moveset i guess. Basically he’s Kyo on crack.

This is not even remotely close to Kyo

This is Chizuru Kagura, The sub boss from KoF 96, her family is related to the ancient history of the Yagami and the Kusanagi with the whole Orochi shenanigans, she organized the KoF 96 tournament to warn people that “OMG you guys! Orochi is coming and we gotta get our shit together!” only to be interrupted by one of Orochi’s generals, also the cheapest final boss in fighting games history. Kyo beats her (and the subsequent final boss) and goes like “im gonna beat Orochi!” or some shit.

Shingo Yabuki is a precious cinnamon bun that must be protected at all costs, he was introduced in KoF 97. Conceptually, Shingo is like a mash up of Sakura and Dan from street fighter, in which much like Sakura he idolizes the main character of the series, but much like Dan, he is a joke character and all his attacks are an inferior version of Kyo’s, dude doesn’t even have fire powers, turns out you need Kusanagi genes in order to use fire power, and he later would find this out in the most insane way ever.

Anyways, in KoF 97 Kyo faces the remaining generals of Orochi, a couple of possesed people by their cursed orochi blood (including Iori) and lastly Orochi himself, who posses a small child named Chris (who is subsequently killed and never seen again in canon), saving the world and we’re led to believe that Orochi is done forever and the saga of Kyo is over.

Still with me here? so far nothing to idiotic or convoluted, right? Well guess what? Guess fucking what! This is where it gets stupid.

The year is 1999, people were afraid of the y2k error and Lou Bega was inexplicably popular, also people were eagerly awaiting the new KoF game after the success of the non canon KoF 98 (non canon games would be known as dream match games), people were excited that a new mainline KoF was happening.

But what is this? There are TWO KYOS on the character select screen, non of them in any team, also Iori is nowhere to be found, Japan Team lacks Goroh and instead has Benimaru teaming up with Shingo and 2 new guys…and now teams have 4 characters?! Also Kyo’s sun logo and Iori’s moon logo are there but are unselectable, just what the fuck is going on?

Turns out, someone decided that Kyo and Iori should be hidden characters.

More accuratedly, THE Kyo, no longer a high school student, Kyo welcomed the new millenium with a new outfit (meanwhile Iori would rival Morrigan in terms of old sprite recycling).

So wait, if that’s Kyo, what’s up with the other two Kyos?

Well, KoF 99 introduced the NESTS storyline. NESTS is a terrorist organization out to conquer the world, and how? Well, about that…

Fresh out of a plane ready to cause some good old fashioned terrorism!

Turns out NESTS plan was to, i shit you not, conquer the world with an army of Kyo clones, said army was lead by this guy…

This is also Kyo, kinda

Turns out, even if they claim their powers are mystical, the Kusanagi family flame powers are coded within their DNA, so this guy, Krizalid, was spliced with Kyo’s DNA to have access to the bitching flame powers Kyo has, he also spear headed the whole Kyo clone army thing, however when he was defeated all Kyo clones were remotely detonated or some shit.

If you’re thinking Kyo defeated him, you’re partially wrong.

This is K’, pronounced “Kay Dash” because nobody explained the japanese that is an apostrophe, not a dash.

K’ is an orphan that was kidnapped by NESTS and spliced with Kyo DNA, he gained access to the flame powers but no way to control them so basically he was like an ineffective Krizalid, so the NESTS scientist did the most humane thing to fix this, and by that i mean they ripped his hand and replaced it with a robotic one so he could control his fire powers.

This, understandably, pissed him off, so he and his robot BFF betrayed NESTS and killed Krizalid (don’t worry too much, he later gets clone to be sidekick to another boss, who is the original version of another boss you fought earlier, because CLONES!) putting a stop to Kyomania ‘99 and pissing off all NESTS big wigs.

And then there is this person, whose status as Kyo is yet to be verified

This is Kula Daimond, literally the anti-K’ in every possible way, she even has a robot BFF of her own, she has kick ass ice powers (counter to K’s fire powers) a supportive family (Counter to K’s dead parents) and basically NESTS treats her like a princess (as opposed to K’s years of physical abuse). How does Kyo factors into this? Well, it’s really silly, Kula’s ice powers were created by reverse engineering Kyo’s fire power. I am not making this up. somewhere in the KoF universe there is a scientist who was handed a sample of Kyo’s DNA and somehow managed to develop ice powers from it. Whoever that scientist is, they are not paid enough.

During KoF 2000, Kula was meant to kill K’, however everything went pear shaped when NESTS realized they had a traitor among their ranks, the final boss of the game (and clone of the next game’s sub boss), a guy name Zero.

Zero dies, and depending your team compositon, he either still manages to destroy South Town or Kula’s robotic BFF sacrifices herself to save the world (as opposed to K’s robot bro getting to stay alive).

Kula goes back to NESTS and gets a lollipop for stoping the traitor, however she failed to kill K’, so desperate measures are brought in.

This is…a parody of the guy from Akira, but also possibly Kyo?

Meet K9999, which is pronounced “Kay four nines” because K’ wasn’t stupid enough of a name. And, yes, that name does imply that there were 9998 Ks before him, it’s also implied K’ is like the perfect K, maybe or some shit, the thing is, it’s never explicitly stated, but we can infer in this guy there is some Kyo DNA somewhere, he still has a couple of fire/explosion attacks, but evidently this was the point where the nests scientists were tired and cranky and went “Fuck this shit!” because this is a guy who attacks by turning his arm into a gross mutation full of tumors and tendrils.

His current whereabouts are unknown, and by that i mean that SNK got a cease and desist from the owners of Akira (okay, okay, their license expired actually) and was replaced by a non canon character who, in order to avoid giving him a dumb name, they opted for not giving him a name at all.

And K’ destroys NESTS and that’s the end of this saga, before we move, i want to point out the NESTS saga also gave us this:

This isn’t Kyo

This is Kyoko, a cosplayer who didn’t even bother to make her outfit the right color and is not even up to date with what Kyo dresses like now.

This is also Kyo

Syo Kirishima is Kyo from an alternate universe where SNK decided to make Kyo have a shitty design.

So with NESTS destroyed, that’s the end of Kyo copies running amok?

Well guess what!

Remember Chizuru? She decided to become relevant again by the year 2003, and she brought special friends!

In KoF 2003 Chizuru comes back to her sub boss role and she has some sort of magic mirror artifact she uses to summon a copy of her dead sister, but that’s not the only thing she brings and she’s not the only sub boss in the game, because….

This is Kyo, from the alternate evil mirror dimension or some shit, because, of course this is kyo!

Actually introduced in the non canon KoF 2002 as an excuse to have Kyo with his old moves and outfit, Kusanagi (because i guess calling him Kyo-3 was out of question) was a dark skinned version of kyo that said really maen shit as his quotes and seemed just so sinister, it wasn’t until KoF 2003 that he was given a role in the lore. Now this is just bullshit, i mean, look at him! he’s like 2 outfits behind!

So this time neither Kyo nor K’ are the protagonists, but the plot still ties heavily to the families related to Orochi (which means Kyo, Iori and Chizuru are central characters to the plot), however this time the protagonist is kind of an anti hero.

Thsi is Ash Crimson, who i want to cuddle with i swear is a guy, really, he is some douche with green flames (because of course he has fire powers) whose motivations are poorly explained, is he with or against the big bad? who cares, the thing is that his plan involves stealing the powers of Iori, Chizuru and Kyo (and he actually succeeds) and he eventually retcons everything in the timeline, presumably because he too thought there was too many Kyos. The end.

So, Kof 14? Well, we don’t know too much about the story, yet, but it’s implied that it takes place in whatever timeline Ash created where events happened differently, and well, dead characters are coming back to KoF 14 and it is a mainline KoF with plot, so there is a high chance that it indeed takes place in a new timeline and possibly there are side effects of Ash’s time fuckery since characters like Nakoruru (from ancient japan) and Love Heart (from an alternate dimension) are part of the game.

So yeah, how about them fighting games?
