The more I go through in my romantic life, the more I realize what a damn miracle it is to find an amazing person to spend the rest of your life with.
Someone who will work through things instead of questioning the whole relationship every time life throws a curve ball.
Someone who has the emotional maturity to choose you instead of relying on feelings.
Someone who will fight for what is good because they know it’s all worth it.
Someone who unthinkingly shoulders each others baggage as partners, because you’re in this together.
I genuinely do not understand how people manage to find someone else and then proceed to spend their lives together as a team. It’s A. DAMN. MIRACLE.

Let me tell you about two students. Student A is a straight-A student, lives in a suburb of Los Angeles. Plays in a punk band with his friends. Loves to skateboard and ride BMX bikes. His favorite show is “Game of Thrones.” His favorite band is The Thermals, he is a ’90s hip hop geek. Student B goes to an underfunded school where teachers, who would rather not be there, teach kids who don’t care. He lives with a single mother, doesn’t know his father, and has sold dope. Now close your eyes. Picture each of these kids and tell me what you see. Be honest. No one’s going to judge you. Now open your eyes. Am I Student A or B? Am I a geek or am I menace? For most of my life I have lived somewhere between who I really am and how I am perceived. Between categories and definition. I don’t fit in. I used to think that was a curse, but I’m slowly starting to see, that maybe, it is a blessing. When you don’t fit, you’re forced to see the world from many different angles and points of view. You find knowledge, life lessons from disparate people and places. And their lessons, for better or worse, have shaped me. So who am I? Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Malcolm Adekanbi. I’m a straight-A student with near perfect SAT scores. I taught myself to play guitar and read music. I have stellar recommendations and diverse extracurricular activities. I’m a Google Science Fair participant. In three weeks I helped make over one hundred thousand dollars for an online business. Why do I want to attend Harvard? If I was white would you even have to ask me that question?

We all have old versions of ourselves. Do you see yourself the same way as last year, last month, or even last week? I do not. I talk to people so easily these days, I stand where I once crumbled just at a touch last year. I do not cry when my father raises his voice like I did a few months ago. I compliment a girl I could not talk to last week. Constantly, we are changing, growing, fluctuating. This is how I know we have many soulmates. Maybe you met yours when you were as young as eight or as old as seventy-eight. Either way, we have a soulmate of every version of ourselves. You loved an old version of me. You can keep her. I do not want that version of myself back ever again.
We are growing and changing constantly, we all have different versions of ourselves that different versions of people love. (via dollpoetry)

“I can’t explain it. I know you’re meant to be in my life. I know we were meant to cross paths and our relationship is not a coincidence. I believe there are people you’re destined to meet during your lifetime and I, without a doubt, believe you are one of mine. I don’t know who you are to me just yet. I don’t know if you’re a lesson waiting to happen or the closest someone will ever come to understanding me, above even myself. I just know you’re meant to be where you are right now. You’re not casually passing through, you’re here to bring my life something I’ve never known up until this point. It’s as if this role was written with you in mind and no one can fulfill it the way you do, you’re just now stepping into your placement. You were written into my life and because of that you fit so snug, so perfectly. Certain traits of your personality exist purely to compliment mine, or maybe it’s the other way around. Some piece of me exists for you alone, and it must be the same for you in turn. I don’t know what you’re meant to be to me just yet, but stay where you are. Please. I can’t explain it, but I know you’re meant to be here.”

Sometimes you meet your soulmate in the most random, bizarre way. You don’t expect them to come into your life, and you don’t necessarily realize it’s them right off the bat. But when you have them, you’re convinced that your love can move mountains, calm oceans, outshine fire, create windstorms, and last forever. You’re so consumed with them, and you can’t imagine a point in your life without them. Your life becomes colorful. Your soul ignites.

When you choose to be a poet, when you choose to spill like this, bleed like this, cry like this, your pain becomes an exhibit. A place for people to walk through and then leave when they are ready. No one ever asks a museum if it’s okay.

But here’s a little secret for you: no one is ever the same thing again after anything. You are never the same twice, and much of your unhappiness comes from trying to pretend that you are. Accept that you are different each day, and do so joyfully, recognizing it for the gift it is. Work within the desires and goals of the person you are currently, until you aren’t that person anymore, and everything changes once again.
