Why do I feel like this frog knows a secret? Well, sly expression or not, this Schmidt’s forest frog [also known as the moaning river frog, Hydrolaetare smidti] is quite beautiful, sporting a clean dorsal stripe and a creamy, mottled belly. These frogs are native to the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, and Peru. They’re named after American herpetologist Karl Patterson Schmidt, a man who contributed multiple works to the scientific literature of amphibians and snakes. The Schmidt’s forest frog seen here was spotted and photographed by Kenny Wray.
