Brenda Kay (Richardson) Vinson

Funeral services for Brenda Kay (Richardson) Vinson, 64, of Clawson will be held Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Yancey and Brother Elton Musick officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery.

Mrs. Vinson was born March 29, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas to the late Betty (Williamson) and Kenneth Richardson, and died Wednesday, March 27, 2019 in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Vinson had resided in Clawson most of her life. After 24 years, she retired from teaching at Central ISD. She was known for baking and decorating cakes and everyone looked forward to her making cakes for their wedding or other special occasions. Her hobbies included painting, drawing, and working in the garden with her flowers. She enjoyed sports and was very active, always doing something. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren and family, especially their beach trips. Mrs. Vinson was a member of Grace Baptist Church (formerly Clawson Baptist). She was a member of the choir and enjoyed singing with her sisters in church.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Cassey Hance and Buck, Wesley Vinson and Jennifer, and Joanna McDaniel and J.R., all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Tyler Hance, Erica Hance, Joseph Lebeau-Vinson, Brayden Vinson, Carson McDaniel, and Chelsie McDaniel, all of Lufkin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita Kahlke and Hank of Michigan, Anita Cheavens and John of Lufkin, and Sherry Horton and Greg of Flower Mound; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gail Howeth and Jarrel of Henderson; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2000, Dale Vinson; and granddaughter, Emily Hance.

Pallbearers will be Kenny Modisette, Jason Howeth, Travis Wealand, Cody Cheavens, Danny Williamson, and Dakota Rogers.

The family would like to express special thanks to her special friends, Susan Leeper, Joy Modisette, and Delores Cordova; Heather, Barry, and Johanna at Larkspur; and Gwen at Affinity Hospice.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.

RealPage reports 4Q loss

RICHARDSON, Texas (AP) _ RealPage Inc. (RP) on Tuesday reported a fourth-quarter loss of $20.9 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Richardson, Texas-based company said it had a loss of 26 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 26 cents per share.

The results matched Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for earnings of 26 cents per share.

The provider of real estate software posted revenue of $187.7 million in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $188.4 million, beating Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $186.5 million.

For the year, the company reported profit of $377,000. Revenue was reported as $674 million.

For the current quarter ending in April, RealPage said it expects revenue in the range of $200 million to $202 million.

The company expects full-year earnings to be $1.41 to $1.47 per share, with revenue ranging from $835 million to $845 million.

RealPage shares have climbed 13 percent since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $49.95, a rise of 49 percent in the last 12 months.

Revamped former Verizon campus in Richardson lands first tenants

A Fort Worth investor’s redo of a Telecom Corridor office complex has attracted new tenants.

Q Real Estate Holdings in 2015 purchased the former Verizon office campus on Glenville Drive in Richardson. The 4-building office complex, built in 1989, was redeveloped into a multi-tenant office campus. With almost 400,000 square feet, its one of the largest available office blocks in Richardson.

Law firm Berry Appleman & Leiden LLP is moving its offices into more than 60,000 square feet in the buildings. NICE Systems Technologies Inc. previously leased space for its offices in the project at 2400 N. Glenville Drive near Greenville Avenue.

Q Real Estate Holdings says it’s close to finishing up work on the buildings.

"We’re very happy with the way renovations turned out," Q Real Estate’s Tommy Ellis said. "We invested a great deal into upgrading and modernizing the facility. Fortunately, we had good bones to begin with."

With 35 acres, Q Real Estate has the option of doubling the offices on the property if a company needs to expand.

"We have about 300,000 square feet available, and feel good about opportunities in 2018," said Trey Smith with Cushman & Wakefield, which is leasing the building. "We’re looking forward to showing the fully renovated building to prospects.

"There’s a tremendous amount of interest in Richardson as a whole, and we’re seeing our fair share of activity."

The Glenville office campus renovation is one of two large corporate office redevelopments in the U.S. Highway 75 corridor in Collin County.

California-based developer Regent Properties is turning the former Texas Instruments campus in Plano into a mixed-use project with office, residential and retail space.

The 4-building campus on Glenville Drive previously housed Verizon.

Is THIS the year Texas goes Democratic? How grassroots organizers hope to make it happen

EL PASO, Texas — Like millions of other Americans, Mary Ibarra started settling into a sports bar on Super Bowl Sunday hours before kickoff, a long day still ahead of her. But unlike most of the Brass Monkey bar’s patrons, she was not sporting Eagles green or Patriots blue, but instead a shirt that read “When they go low, we go local.”

Ibarra was at the Brass Monkey not to watch the game — as a Cowboys fan, she wasn’t enamored with either option — but to register voters for next month’s primaries. Texas’s primaries are early (March 6) and citizens have to be registered 30 days before. As a staffer for the voter outreach organization Voto Latino, Ibarra had been on the ground for three weeks organizing volunteers to expand the base of voters and encourage turnout in an area that’s highly populated (El Paso County is the eighth largest county in the state) and heavily Latino (82.2 percent, per 2016 census estimates). The Super Bowl registration effort, here and at another bar across town, was part of a final push. (Texans will still have until Oct. 9 to register to vote in the general election, and Voto Latino plans to keep up its efforts until then. But with studies showing voting as habitual, getting people to the polls for the primary is a good way to improve their chances of showing up in the general election.)

Voto Latino is one of the many groups addressing the biennial question posed by political prognosticators — “Is this the year Texas turns blue?” The Lone Star state hasn’t gone for a Democrat in a statewide race since 1994, and no Democratic presidential candidate has won here since Jimmy Carter in 1976, but there’s a belief that it’s just a matter of time. Texas is becoming more and more Latino, and because Latinos generally vote Democratic, turning blue regarded as a foregone conclusion. There are encouraging signs for Democrats: Hillary Clinton lost the state by 9 points, the first single-digit margin for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1996. A January poll puts President Trump at 54 percent disapproval among Texans, at a sample size of over 13,000 respondents.

But hopes for a Democratic wave depend on correcting the extremely low turnout and registration among Texans, particularly among the Latino population. So there is plenty of work to be done on the ground, which is where Ibarra and other organizers across the 268,580-square-mile state come in.

(Voto Latino bills itself as nonpartisan, but it’s closely connected to a number of Democratic politicians, and polling says its target demographic of young Latinos strongly support Democratic candidates.)

“Voto Latino does national work, we register voters in all 50 states,” said Jessica Reeves, the group’s chief operating officer. “But places like Texas are incredibly hard because we focus on young Latinos who are very digitally savvy and trendsetters in terms of consuming social media … but when it comes to registering and becoming a voter in Texas, it’s incredibly hard and incredibly old school.”

The difficulty Reeves mentions is that Texas voters cannot just register online, because the state requires mailing in a form or in-person registration. The in-person option is tricky in Texas, which requires that voters be registered by a volunteer deputy registrar certified in a specific county to be legally permitted to register voters there. The process varies from county to county, but in some areas, the training or test might be offered only once a month. With 254 counties, it makes coordinating a statewide drive nearly impossible, leaving it to local organizations to do the work county by county.

Compared to other states that offer same-day or even automatic voter registration, Texas’s process is exceptionally difficult to navigate. When combined with strict voter I.D. laws that hinder turnout of the voters who are registered, it creates a major challenge for organizers.

Man sought in deaths of 2 in Virginia surrenders in Texas

TAHOKA, Texas (AP) — A Texas sheriff says a 32-year-old man facing two first-degree murder counts in the deaths of two people in Virginia has surrendered to authorities.

Lynn County Sheriff Abraham Vega said Thursday that Amos Jacob Arroyo was taken into custody a day earlier at a convenience store in O’Donnell, south of Lubbock in West Texas.

Arroyo is held without bond in the Lynn County Jail on charges filed by Newport News, Virginia, police that also include two weapons charges.

Vega says Arroyo will remain in jail until federal marshals can transport him to Virginia, but it’s not clear when that may occur.

Vega had no details on the Newport News killings, and police there did not return a call for comment Thursday.

Texas toddler missing after being sent outside at 3 a.m.

A 3-year-old from Texas has been missing for three days since her father sent her out alone to an alley at 3 a.m. — her punishment, police say he told officers, for not drinking her milk.

Sherin Mathews, a special-needs toddler last seen early Saturday morning in her family’s back yard in Richardson, a northern Dallas suburb, is thought to be in grave and immediate danger. Her father, Wesley Mathews, was arrested and charged Saturday evening with abandoning or endangering the girl. He was released Sunday night on a $250,000 bond.

Mathews told police detectives that he told Sherin to go stand by a tree near the family’s house in the 900 block of Sunningdale at 3 a.m. Saturday because she wouldn’t drink her milk, according to his arrest affidavit. The tree was behind the fence, about 100 feet south of the house and across an alley.

Mathews checked on Sherin about 3:15 a.m. and she was gone, according to the affidavit. Police said they weren’t alerted to her disappearance until several hours later, about 8 a.m. Mathews told police he thought she’d come back on her own so he did a load of laundry while he waited, hoping he could locate her once the sun rose.

Mathews and his wife, Sini, reportedly adopted Sherin about two years ago from an orphanage in India, said Sgt. Kevin Perlich, a spokesman for the Richardson Police Department. Mathews told police that Sherin was malnourished and had to be on a special diet to gain weight. She had to be fed whenever she was awake, Perlich said, and wasn’t cooperating when her father tried to feed her.

“So that was the frustration [Mathews] was experiencing that night,” Perlich said. “But of course we’re working to verify all of that.”

It’s a narrative that has the community buzzing with questions. In Dallas-area coffee shops, in nearby workplaces and on social media, people mull over the details of Sherin’s disappearance — such as why Mathews waited so long to call the police, or why there are so few clues as to where she might have gone.

“It’s just a very sad thing, and there’s still so much question. A lot of the story doesn’t make sense,” said Bob Morse, 66, who lives a few houses away from Sherin’s parents.

He happened to be awake and outside at 4 a.m. Saturday, less than an hour after she reportedly disappeared, lighting his grill so that he could cook a brisket later in the day.

“At 4 a.m. in the morning, it was quiet. If a child four houses away cried out, I would hear it,” Morse said. “If a car drove by, I would know.”

The quiet neighborhood is home to mostly South Asian families, neighbors say. Most houses have garages behind their homes, so families often enter from the back. But rarely does anyone walk around or spend time behind the homes, near the area where Sherin was reportedly sent to stand, Morse said.

Sherin is described as about 3 feet tall and 22 pounds. She has developmental issues and limited verbal communication skills, unlike a typical 3-year-old, Richardson police said. She was last seen wearing a pink top, black pajama bottoms and pink flip-flops.

Because of the lack of information and tips, officials discontinued the Amber Alert they had issued for Sherin after her disappearance. Police said they need a specific vehicle or a suspect to continue the alert. The alert could be reissued if authorities develop new leads, he said.

Meanwhile, police are searching with canine experts and helicopters. Neighbors and volunteers are canvassing door-to-door, posting fliers and conducting their own search parties.

Neighbors are particularly curious about a detail Mathews gave to police in his arrest affidavit — that he knew coyotes had been seen in the alley. But investigators and volunteers agree that nothing indicates a coyote dragged the girl away.

On Monday, Child Protective Services took custody of Sherin’s 4-year-old sister and put her into foster care, said Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman for the agency. She said the agency had contacted the family in the past but could not elaborate. Neither Sherin or her sister had been in foster care before Sherin’s disappearance.

Sherin’s parents are no longer speaking with police and have retained attorneys, Perlich said. Sherin’s mother was asleep when Mathews told Sherin to go stand outside, but wasn’t aware that he’d given her daughter those instructions, Perlich said.

Members of the Emmanuel Bible Chapel, the church Mathews and his family attend, have helped search several areas near the family’s home since Saturday. One member, Jose Cherian, told NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth that Mathews and his wife are good parents.

“The parents are also loving, they loved Sherin very much,” he said. “They take care of her very much.”

Redfin, a real estate company, has released a list of 2017’s hottest neighborhoods, highlighting major cities across the nation. For Texas, the company focused on Houston, San Antonio, Austin and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

"Redfin’s Hottest Neighborhoods is a prediction based on the most recent growth we’ve seen in pageviews and favorites on Redfin.com," the company said on its website. The company checked in with Realtors in each city on the hottest neighborhoods list. Here’s what they had to say:

" The Energy Corridor is growing rapidly and becoming the new energy capital of the world, so Spring Branch Central is an increasingly popular neighborhood for those who work in the energy field," said Irma Jalifi of Houston.

In San Antonio, Lavaca is estimated to be the hottest neighborhood in the city. The oldest neighborhood in San Antonio drawing transplants from D.C., New York and other cities, according to one Realtor.

"It’s a quiet, quaint neighborhood with a variety of home styles and types, but it’s also really close to downtown so it appeals to those who want access to an urban lifestyle," Realtor Melanie Salas told Redfin. "Many of the families in Lavaca were born and raised there, so there’s a really strong sense of community."

Hiking and biking trails have been revitalized, and being so close to the water is a big draw for many homeowners," said Realtor Andrew Vallejo. "There’s also great dining, plenty of public transportation and close proximity to the airport."

In the Dallas-Forth Worth area, Arapaho Heights in Richardson is forecasted to be next hottest neighborhood. Richardson lies between Plano and downtown Dallas, serving as a perfect place for people who commute to work but still want to be close to the city.

Then head coach Dennis Erickson praised Richardson: "He’s probably the hardest hitter we’ve had in the secondary since Bobby Harden," he said, according to Randall Mell of the Sun Sentinel.

Richardson played for Miami for three seasons. In 1993 he tied for third in the Big East in interceptions with three. He was named an All-American after the 1994 season. By the end of his UM career, Richardson had tallied five career interceptions and earned accolades, which propelled him to the NFL.

Richardson played for both the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks during his pro career, which lasted from 1995 to 1997.

Perhaps it’s the school. Maybe it’s the number. It’s possibly the players themselves. Whatever the reason, you could make a similar comparison between Brandon Meriweather and the previously mentioned C.J. Richardson.

Meriweather looked to make the big hit on opponents when they trespassed in front of him, attempting to dislodge the ball from the carrier and take their feet off the ground for good measure.

Although he had been a high school star when he arrived at Miami from Apopka High School, where he won a Florida Class 6A state championship in 2001, Meriweather was unable to make a splash his freshman season. He suffered an ankle injury after playing three games that season, and he was granted a medical redshirt. He returned the following season to make an impact both in special teams and as a nickel defensive back.

Meriweather moved to free safety in his junior season. He was truly a gift to the Miami defense, as he could be lined up at different positions depending on the matchup.

Meriweather concluded his UM career with 146 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 7 interceptions. Sadly, his accomplishments at UM tend to get overshadowed by several unfortunate incidences. Notwithstanding these events, he went on to be a first-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2007 NFL Draft. Managing to be a impactful player in the NFL for nine seasons, Meriweather ended his career in 2015.

Punters are people too! Kalal served as UM’s punter from 1988 to 1989. Credited for his ability to put great hang time on his punts and to pin opponents within the 20, Kalal served as the holder on field goals for Carlos Huerta.

In the two seasons that Darrell Fullington was a member of the Hurricanes secondary, where he would go on to snag 5 interceptions during the 1984 season alone. While there are some that still have animosity for the plays that Fullington didn’t make in the second half against Maryland in the 1984 season and that play that made Flutie a household name. Regardless, Fullington was drafted in the 5th round of the 1988 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. In his five NFL seasons, he was also a member of the New England Patriots, finishing as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Fullington would start at safety, while later in his career he was converted to be a nickel back.
