Emilie dashed out of the coffee shop, drink in hand. She glanced down at her clock, muttering an expletive under her breath. She had picked up another 12-hour shift which, at the time, sounded like a good idea. That is, until she had nearly run out of clean scrub tops and ran on three hours of sleep in the last 48 hours. She loved her job, but sometimes, it seemed to wear her down. She rounded a corner, smacking straight into somebody, spilling coffee on her only clean top. “For fucks sake.” She sighed, glancing up at the person before her. “I’m so sorry. You’re not catching me on my best day.”

Nero thought she was lucky enough that week to get enough money to actually treat herself for once. She was going to get a really good cup of coffee and a muffin. Nothing she could usually splurge on but just was she was walking into the cafe she ran into another person and found a fountain of hot liquid going in every direction. “Oh! Wow, maybe there should be a golden rule for now on, pay attention while holding coffee.”

Regardless of age, Case was still quite the fuckboy at times and spent his nights off partying at the local clubs and trying to bring someone home to keep him distracted for the night. This time, someone seemed to be trying to get his attention, “Hey, what’s up, baby?”

Nero had already picked the boys wallet and taken the cash she needed. But her favorite part of stealing at the club was tricking people in getting her free drinks. “Ah ha! I saw this on the floor and looked at your id. You dropped your wallet. Here you go, baby.”

he feels the presence, but he makes no effort to look over at them. brows furrow and he only hopes they don’t try and pull him from his weak hiding spot.  “i don’t want to move today.” he’s quick to tell them, hoping that’ll be enough to stop them.

“And if you don’t do that how will you eat?” Nero said plopping next to him with a raised brow. “Are you going to order it from here?” She laughed and looked at Buster. “What’s got you so down?”

Abigail laughed at how seemingly innocent the girl speaking to her was. “That makes my kids mad, too. They also get mad when I give them regular chicken nuggets instead of dinosaur chicken nuggets. I wish those were my problems, you know?”

Neero felt her breath catch in her throat. “Wow, regular chicken nuggets? How could you?” She said before realizing something that saddened her. “I uh...don’t remember the last time I even had dino nuggets...I really don’t” With a sigh she shook her head. “But yeah, I’d rather deal with that then some social worker... or anything really.”

His eyes are dazzling when she tells him her little pearl of wisdom, a bright smile eclipsing his features and he leans his chin against his hand as he watches her quietly, not willing to talk over her. “I can definitely help you with that, tell you all the…best places to find anything.” He’ll chirp excitedly, head cocking to his side. “Does that sound like a deal you could get on board with?”  

Nero talked a lot and knew people usually got annoyed by it but seeing his interest in what she was saying was actually refreshing. “Wait... really? Because that would be so awesome! I’ll be an awesome treasure hunter.” Nero nodded her head and held out her hand. “You have yourself a deal, I might even share some of the amazing things I find with you, if you’re lucky.”

Abigail smiled, turning her attention to the girl who spoke to her. “No, it’s alright. Things can just be frustrating sometimes, but that’s life, right?” She shook her head, embarrassedly laughing. “Sorry for getting so upset on the phone, I try not to do that in public. Or, ever, really.”

“No, it’s totally okay. I mean I’d be a complete hypocrite if I judged you for getting mad when I get that way all the time. Like, I was mad at a pizza the other day because when I went to eat it all the cheese fell off.”

   “look how cool this is, found it on my shift at the beach earlier on,” he’ll state to the other, pride seeping through every pore. it wasn’t anything to write home about, but niall had always found himself uniquely fascinated by everything that washed up on the shore. the ocean, the water, it had always intrigued the life guard. after all, it’s why he became a life guard in the first place. 

Nero held out her hand as the boy held up the object. “Here let me see. “The island is the best place to find cool stuff. Once I was told that if you swipe a metal detector across the sand you can actually find a lot of treasure from ships that have crashed off the shore. Hell, maybe that is how I’ll start getting some extra cash. But this is really cool...did you find anything else?”

he wasn’t quite sure in what universe he fit in anywhere close to a place where people did sports, but he did quite enjoy just looking at the guys running around, throwing shit at each other, trying to catch it until they got too hot for whatever they were wearing… the boy took a deep breath and saw one figure walking past him, making him pop both ear buds out of his ear, before just draping them around his neck and trying his best to sit up straight.. “uhm– hey!” he called out in an effort to get their attention.

Nero had absolutely no interest in sports whatsoever. But to say she didn’t have interest in the gym bags people left around to exercise was a whole other story. Nero was skilled at slpping her hands in the bags at just the right time to collect wallets or any other valuable thing and go unnoticed. She did actually feel scared when someone called out to her but seeing her friend eased the schock instantly. “Oh! Hey! What’s up, Beau?” She asked knowing the boy was a non-sports fan as much as she was. “I take it you’re not here to get your ‘’summer bod’’ looking at it’s best?”

Jaquees chuckled lowly as he finished up wiping the table down, wiping a bit of sweat from his forehead as he moved back behind the counter. “I appreciate your honesty. One more soup of the day comin’ up. Don’t worry about payin’ though, it’s on the house.” He winked at her before moving into the kitchen and starting on her soup.

Nero nodded. “Well, I think if I wasn’t honest then nothing would be done about the taste, right?” She said and smiled. “You make sure you season that soup up any way you like, I’ll be sure to stick up for you if anyone says something. Trust me, anyone yells at me, I make sure they regret it.” Even as nice as the girl was she did know how to stand up for herself.

“No, I totally understand. Thank you for calling me, I’ll see you later,” Abigail said into the phone before hanging up with a resolute click. “Fuck,” she said out loud. It was a rare occasion for Abigail to curse, and she realized she had said that word very loudly and people were staring. “Sorry,” she said, sheepishly. “It was my social worker… just got some frustrating news, is all.”

Nero would never want people in her business but as the woman seemed to get more heated in her conversation it was harder not to eavesdrop. Little did she expect the other woman to address her when she hung up. “Oh, um. Yeah, it’s alright. That stuff is a pain. Do you like... want to talk about it or something?”

“I can’t wait until I buy this place,” Jaquees muttered to himself as he wiped off the counter, still a little upset with the number of complaints he had gotten that day. “I can’t season the food without gettin’ in trouble, how do they expect people to enjoy their meal”

Nero looked at the boy and finally dug in her pocket to see how much cash she had managed to pocket that day. “You want to season the food good? I will pay extra for you to get me the soup of the day to taste good. They can’t get mad if the customer is paying for it right? Besides, this soup here is complete crap. It tastes like dish water.”

Luke’s brow furrowed when the other questioned who he was. Clearly it was his little sister Nero but for whatever reason, he seemed unrecognizable to her. Sure it had been a while, but he never thought it would be easy to forget blood. “Very funny, N, stop fucking with me.”

Nero was starting to feel nerves growing at her stomach. How did the boy know her name? And why was he acting so weird. “Look, I’m Nero, but I don’t know you. So unless this is a dump prank Hayden set you up to play then you failed.” She said taking a step back from the boy. “Now, who are you so I can tell him to pay you fair and square.”
