@wilwheaton Exactly. And that is my problem with fundamentalist Christians. So much so, I’ve spent time questioning my own faith. But, for me it shakes out to this: Christians follow the teachings of Christ (Christian = to become more Christ-like). Doing to means we ascribe to the covenant of Christ which supersedes ALLLLLLL of the previous covenants of the Old Testament. Jesus tells me to be happy, treat everyone with dignity and respect (regardless of anything else a person uses to define themselves), and not to be a dick. That’s it. And that’s what I believe. And that’s why fundamentalists spouting Leviticus as the rules to live by piss me off
Re: faith and seeking help, as a Christian, my advice to other Christians - put away the Old Testament (it's not our book anyway) and focus on the New Testament. The take away from the New Testament is that God wants two things from us: He wants us to treat others with kindness and respect and he wants us to be happy. The rest is commentary and allegory. Any one who claims to be a Christian who tries to tell you that seeking professional help is a sin, is not a Christian and should be ignored.
I feel like a lot of the fundamentalists who suck up all the oxygen in the room never bothered with the new testament. It’s like they got to Leviticus, said, “That’s good enough for me!” and got busy judging people.
I appreciate you sharing your perspective, and I hope more people will internalize He wants us to treat others with kindness and respect and he wants us to be happy whether they’re religious, or not.
