The premise takes place in a world with an online network called "Cyberspace NOVA", effectively a Virtual Reality version of the Internet. NOVA is mainly known for its many mysteries, such as the enigmatic living computer programs called "Digital Monsters". One day, Akio Saotome encounters a mysterious girl named "Annie", who leaves behind a mysterious "Digivice". He soon discovers that the "Digimon" life forms are starting to cross over from NOVA into the real world. With the help of his friends and various Digimon, Akio steps into a hidden world of adventure and danger as he investigates the cause of the problem. And that's only the tip of something bigger looming over the surface...

Character Tropes
Humans
Akio Saotome
Beware the Nice Ones: If you know what’s good for you, do not threaten any of his friends, especially Giggy.
Big Brother Instinct: He can be a bit of a doting big brother to Giggy at times.
Guile Hero: He is shown to be a clever person being able to understand the Monster of the Week's desire and powers.
The Hero: He is the main character and the leader of the group.
The Leader: He's the official leader, being that he's the one who keeps the team together.
Master of Unlocking: Akio first displays this skill by picking the lock of the doors to the mall, which was closed off due to being a crime scene, and later breaks into a closed theme park to investigate a Digimon incident.
Nice Guy: Even when he goes to the extreme, he always has everyone else's best interest at heart.
Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Straight Man to Giggy’s Wise Guy.
Maaya Amachi
Cool Big Sis: To both Buzz and Ginji on occasion, though with mixed success.
Deadpan Snarker: In the dub, Maaya tends to bring the snark in most conversation, especially if she is explaining something to either Ginji or Kiyoko.
Only Sane Man: Roughly.
Team Mom: Falls into this rather frequently.
Ginji Futara
Deadpan Snarker: Granted, this is mostly due to the Gag Dub.
The Mad Hatter: He's quite aware of how quirky he is, but he says it "results in awesome!"
The Pollyanna: Of all the human characters, Ginji is the most upbeat and most inclined to look on the bright side. If he's ever dejected or down, it never lasts for very long.
Kiyoko Tokita
Badass Adorable: She’s (usually) a cute and cheerful girl, who can and will fight with the others.
Easily Forgiven: In spite of accidentally causing a fire at school, her friends don't hold it against her and assure her that it's okay.
In the Hood: She always wears her short-sleeved hoodie.
Manic Pixie Dream Girl: She and Annie become these for Akio, Annie as a platonic version and Kiyoko as romantic.
Nice Girl: Kiyoko is very friendly and kind to everyone to the point that Annie comments that she's "hopeless", but also "cool" that way, as the group needs someone like Kiyoko.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Annie’s Red.
She's Got Legs: Her main outfit consists of a pair of short shorts which, combined with her hoodie, draws attention to her legs.
Stylish Protection Gear: Wears goggles for both aesthetic and protective purposes.
Digimon Partners
Keramon/”Giggy”
Ax-Crazy: Among the Digimon, he seems to enjoy causing mayhem the most, including firing weapons and destroying things. Ginji even calls him "a violent little guy".
The Gadfly: He sometimes likes to poke fun at his friends just to get a rise out of them.
If It Swims, It Flies: He is able to float through the air just like how a jellyfish would swim in the ocean.
The Imp: Short and less than moral, as well as having a propensity to stir up trouble, intentionally and otherwise. And he’s the main Digimon!
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Giggy is the first one to laugh at misfortune, yet pals around with Akio a lot.
Large Ham: Especially for Andy Samberg in the English dub.
Straight Man and Wise Guy: The Wise Guy to Akio's Straight Man more or less.
Troll: He likes to scare and tease others, and relishes in pissing off his opponents during battle once he has the upper hand.
Tentomon/”Buzz”
Deadpan Snarker: Very.
Fat Best Friend: The others have affectionately commented on Buzz being “stocky”.
Genius Ditz: Not exactly the most lucid Digimon, but he is good at mathematics. Also, if anybody's going to deliver a wordy monologue, it's likely to be Buzz.
Wormmon/”Midori”/”Green”
Apologizes a Lot: Has the habit of immediately whispering "Sorry" after cracking offensive jokes or bad puns.
Distressed Dude: Has gotten into this role a couple of times.
Arukenimon/”Annie”
Beware the Silly Ones: She's usually quite goofy and good-natured, but she’s still an Arukenimon: When she gets upset, she gets upset.
The Big Guy: Of the main Digimon team.
Big Sister Instinct: Annie is the closest to having a sisterly relationship with Kiyoko and is quite protective of her.
Boyish Short Hair: In her human disguise. It lengthens in her Digimon form.
Cool Big Sis: Annie is like Kiyoko's cool and rebellious older sister figure who likes to have fun with her.
Defiant Captive: When she’s captured by the Four Lords, she sasses them when they interrogate and threaten to torture her, attacks a Mook when she’s Bound and Gagged, and, when she’s kidnapped in the second movie, pins her captor to the floor within seconds of arriving at his lair.
Elite Mook: Was this to the Four Lords before realizing that they were willing to kill anyone who opposed them.
Genki Girl: Loud and full of laughter, she finds everything amusing, but can be very emotional and isn't afraid to act on impulse.
Good All Along: After immense speculation of what sort of malicious goal this Arukenimon has, she turns out to be a rebel working against the bad guys.
Heel-Face Turn: Was okay with the Four Lords’ plans at the start, but became suspicious of their morals when Leomon confronted her about it. Then, after the two discovered the war plans, the Lords killed Leomon and framed Annie for his murder.
Heel Realization: Annie having this is what sets the plot in motion.
Hugh Mann: She has no idea what a cell phone or radio tower is, and knows more about Digimon than Akio when they first meet.
It's Personal: One of her reasons for wanting to rebel against the Four Lords is because they Killed Leomon and framed her for it.
Knight of Cerebus: A heroic example.
Manic Pixie Dream Girl: She and Kiyoko become these for Akio, Annie as a platonic version and Kiyoko as romantic. Annie is also a catalyst for the series's action, introducing Akio fully to the world of Digimon.
Mysterious Waif: She first appears at the beginning of the series in human form, being pursued by Sealsdramon, and gives three of the protagonists their digivices before being captured. The fact that she’s an Arukenimon isn’t officially confirmed until the end of the third episode, and after she’s rescued from the Four Lords, she joins the main cast along with Kiyoko.
Mythology Gag: Just like in the Adventure series, Digimon Ghost Game, and Digimon Survive, she first attempts to earn the children’s trust in her human form (which is notably different from the aforementioned incarnations). Unlike those three, this Arukenimon has noble intentions.
Non-Malicious Monster: Despite being an Arukenimon, Annie is firmly on the side of good. Even her initially working for the Four Lords is because of her being lied to about their motivations.
Nothing Is Scarier: In her first appearance, the audience knows exactly what she really is based on her color scheme, which has appeared in the franchise before, yet at first nothing is made clear about what she wants. All the audience knows is that an Arukenimon has given the protagonists a Digivice each, without any of the three knowing who or what she really is or why. This all serves to make Annie's first appearance more ominous and chilling. That being said, it's all a Red Herring; when Annie is shown outside of this creepy imagery, she is Good All Along.
One of the Kids: When disguised as a human.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Kiyoko's Blue.
Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Her reaction to realizing the truth about the Four Lords. She swipes the stolen Digivice Neos after they frame her for Leomon’s death.
Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: The fact that she’s an Arukenimon might come off as alarming, but she's really a good Digimon.
Tomboyish Ponytail: After the confrontation with Miss Akira, Annie begins wearing her hair in a ponytail for the rest of the series (short in her human form and long in her Digimon form).
Tomboyish Voice: In the English dub, her voice is a bit deep and raspy, courtesy of the naturally husky Michaela Dietz, which is more apparent when she yells.
You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Being an Arukenimon, Annie is more prone to emotional outbursts than the other Digimon, which can cause her to morph from a goofball into a reckless berserker. This is how she managed to fight Miss Akira to a standstill, despite the fact that they both know that Akira, being older than Annie, is more skilled.

NEO Digimon Adventure: The Island of Children
Amidst a rash of disappearances of children, Akio’s little cousin Tomomi accepts an offer from Monzaemon and Petermon to board Locomon and travel to a “child’s paradise”. Akio and the gang follow her to the Island of Joy, where they uncover the dark secret of this seemingly wonderful place, and fight together with ToyAgumon to stop a sinister plot by the island’s creator, who has big plans for the stolen children.
NEO Digimon Adventure: The Bride of Prince Mamemon
When Annie unwittingly catches the eye of Prince Mamemon, he wishes for her to become his bride. Lampmon is all too willing to grant that wish, and abducts Annie to Prince Mamemon’s fortress on El Doradimon. The others thus team up with Knightmon to rescue her before the wedding commences.

Kiyoko Tokita
A former classmate. A self-described shut-in who doesn't go to school due to being involved in an incident there. She winds up dragged into the digital world with the others, and joins them in their adventures.
Arukenimon/”Annie”
The plot’s instigator, and the only partner who spends most of her time in Perfect form. Before the events of the series, she pulled a Heel-Face Turn after finding out how far her masters were willing to go to accomplish their shared goal. She loves to instigate pranks and act ridiculous even in the face of danger, which can sometimes result in innocents getting caught in the middle of her antics. Her wild personality is rather a contrast to Kiyoko’s innocence.

Ginji Futara
Akio’s friend who reacts strongly to his emotions. He's a reckless blockhead at times, willing to jump into anything, and this gets him into serious trouble.
Wormmon/”Midori”/”Green”
Ginji’s Digimon partner. Doesn't do too much at first, but once he evolves into Stingmon for the first time, he is awesome.

Tentomon/”Buzz”
