i started playing rance just to understand people's fascination with both the games and the character. and i still don't fully get it. but i assume everyone has their own reason for liking rance.

i believe each game has its own different tone, but i decided to start with VI which seems to be on the more serious side.

it's so fascinating having a deeply unserious character like rance having deal with serious issues, namely joining a resistance against a extremely hierarchal kingdom where non-magic users are not only discriminated against, but outright abused and tortured and sentenced to slavery. characters of the resistance do show genuine trauma from living in such a kingdom.

what's most interesting to me, thus far, is urza. she is deeply depressed due to her own perceived powerlessness. she is in a wheelchair, but her legs have long since healed and she is physically able to walk again, but there is a strong mental barrier preventing her from having the motivation and desire to stand on her own legs again.

she cares deeply for every member of the resistance and is heartbroken if anyone of them dies, but has little care for her own life.

she doesn't like rance ordering her around and telling her to do dangerous things. but she finds comfort it in. having heavy decisions taken out of her control is comforting. even if what rance tells her to do is objectively wrong. she has such a deep, deep and explicit hatred for herself that i was not expecting to see.

...but of course, because it's rance, he is deeply unserious. the only thing he can think to say when presented with a severely suicidal person is "hahaha noooo dont kill yourself you're too sexy" <333
