[Pre-debut Chen stories] Stay the Same Kim Jongdae ❤

“He makes me feel proud and amazed too - my student Jongdae.. 

Teaching him for 2 years, I developed a lot of affection for him…

note: I didn’t translate the whole post. It was posted along with the pictures by Chen’s music tutor. Chen took lessons with him from his 2nd year of High School until he was 20 (2 years) because he wanted to go to University and major in Practical Music but he didn’t get in that year. So his tutor encouraged him to audition and… the rest is history :)

He also wrote he had tons of pictures of Jongdae fooling around during lessons, wearing those terrible magnifying glasses but he only posted the ones where he looked good so as not to disappoint the fans ㅋㅋ

You know Chen graduated from JungWang High, right?

In our school, Chen is on the level of Yoo JaeSuk, he’s really JungWang High’s pride ㅋㅋ

But it’s not that I personally know Chen because I went to JungWang High; my Cousin oppa also graduated from JungWang High and was close to Jongdae..That’s why I always ask him to give me his number or tell me stories about him. He never does  —— He says he can’t because (Jongdae)’s his friend. I think he treasures Jongdae more than his dongsaeng (me) ㅋㅋ

Still he told me a few things about him

Firstly he said Jongdae wasn’t wildly popular in High School ㅋㅋ There was a friend who always cut Jongdae’s hair and he apparently always ruined Jongdae ㅋㅋㅋ (by giving him bad haircuts. Sidenote: Chen looked for the friend on Younha’s Starry Night radio and a listener messaged with the show his friend’s number - Chen talked about the haircut and the friend was like - "you remember that?” and Chen replied: “Of course I remember, pabo-ya~~” Sweetest thing ever ♡ ) He wore glasses and his skin was also not that good .. ㅜ he was average in studies 

Everyday, every time he spoke he’d say he is going to become a singer…Apparently all the students knew that there was a kid who dreamt of being a singer and that he truly sings freaking well ㅋㅋ Everytime they went out, the noraebang (karaoke room) was a must go-to place. However he wasn’t the selfish/ egoistic kind of kid that would never let go of the mic. When it was his turn to sing, he’d sing. Then, when it was his friends’ turn to sing, he would play the tambourine and dance ㅋㅋ Ah the leg shaking dance that Jongdae did on their 2nd appearance on Weekly Idol, you remember that dance?

[My cousin] said that Jongdae would always do that dance in the Noraebang ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ When I heard that I burst out laughing ㅋㅋ

And he said that Jongdae was truly nice. For real. Kind like an angel. That’s why he was really popular among his friends and although Jongdae talked a lot even back then, he was also very good at listening.. Whenever he would look into your eyes and talk to you, you could feel his affection for his friends ㅋㅋ He used to buy his friends food often too and was the MoodMaker in the class ㅇㅇIf the other students told him to sing for them, he’d apparently do it without putting on any airs because he was so nice

Teachers also really liked him. Also, during lessons he would always struggle not to fall asleep but sometimes if you looked at him he’d be sleeping with his mouth open ㅋㅋㅋ

Just this much, for today. If I hear more, I will let you all know. Perhaps it’s because I know a bit about Jongdae’s past, I like Jongdae even more

Jongdae isn’t a guy who pays lip-service/ makes empty promises. He is a caring and kind kid so I request you not to spread weird rumours about his past

My Oppa feels upset.. I too feel the same after finding out (about how Jongdae is)

This story 가시연 (Gashiyeon), is famously known internationally as Thorn Year. However 가시연 actually loosely translates to Thorn Lily. Gashiyeon actually means ‘Lily with a thorn’ or 'You’re the one who should love my thorn’. The title is believed to be chosen based on the premise that despite the problems Jaejoong causes, Yunho is the only one who puts up with and forgives him. Jaejoong is seen as the Lily with thorns. Beautiful but dangerous.

I'm a little confused. If it's racist to depict characters with noticeable epicanthal folds, then doesn't that imply that the epicanthal fold is considered an ugly feature by the person making the criticism? Seeing as it's a normal feature that many asians have...I can understand not wanting it to be exaggerated into a racist caricature, but leaving it out entirely? That doesn't rub you as being a little "Look, I left the East Asian features out so they'd be pretty!"? Which is racist in itself?

i’m assuming you’re referring to my we bare bears example. first of all, drop the ‘gasp you’re actually being racist against yourself??’ tone. i’m fine with dialogue but i have asian perspective and experience. be respectful.

no one said it’s racist to draw epicanthal folds. if your art is more realistic and detail-focused, it makes sense to include different kinds of eye folds. but in a cartoon, non-epicanthal folds aren’t translated. it’s not like you see little lines above a white person’s eyes. they’re just the typical round style. so it makes sense that the element of eye folds are left out entirely when it comes to all depicted races.

i used we bare bears as a good example because it’s the rare time asian characters’ eyes actually fit in with the style. they don’t need to squint, or be abnormally small, because no one else’s eyes do that. i don’t care that chloe has big eyes, because she’s a kid and everyone else, regardless of race, is similar. it matters more to me that her heritage is shown and celebrated rather than her having token asian traits.

sometimes cartoons can give asian eyes a lil difference and that’s fine too! candy from gravity falls has wider eyes, but they’re still round and cartoony. it’s a noticeable aberration from the style but it’s a small and harmless detail.

total drama, while not the uh, best example for a lot of things, has a great angular style. a lot of characters (gwen, izzy, duncan) have smaller eyes while not being asian. so it makes sense that heather, a polynesian character, has a bit of a half-circle shape to her eyes. it shows a diversity of eye shapes and sizes without focusing on racial stereotypes. 

but ‘everyone has big eyes except the squinty asians’ happens. a lot. take trixie from the fairly odd parents. everyone’s eyes are round and big. hers are half circles, like 40% the average size. if her eyes are ‘accurately’ shaped, why does everyone else get identical cartoonish circles?

disclaimer: i grew up idolizing any representation i found, and i liked trixie a lot. and for children, it’s not the end of the world if exclusively asian characters are given small eyes. but it’s clear that she was designed by non-asian people, and there is always room for improvement.

onto more realistic art! when it comes to stereotypically limiting asian design vs. respectfully showing asian diversity, _ket2 put it best.

in conclusion, if you’re going to draw asian characters, don’t make them all have the same ridiculously small eyes compared to everyone else. asian people, especially artists, have been saying this forever.unlearn limiting racial preconceptions. learn from references and how diverse people look in real life.
