~This brooch depicts Goya´s painting "Witches' Sabbath" (1798). It shows the devil in the form of a garlanded goat, surrounded by a coven of disfigured, young and aging witches in a moonlit barren landscape. The goat possesses large horns and is crowned by a wreath of oak leaves. An old witch holds an infant in her hands. The devil seems to be acting as priest at an initiation ceremony for the child, though popular superstition at the time believed the devil often fed on children and human fetuses. The skeletons of two infants can be seen; one discarded to the left, the other held by a crone in the centre foreground.

A Witch Bottle containing pins, nails, an animal heart, and urine from the bewitched. This one used a Bellarmine jug as the bottle itself. Witch Bottles were typically buried in a secret location and were believed to draw any curses or spells away from the bottle’s maker.

Richard Baxter - Pamphlet on the Existence of Witches and Ghosts, 1681. Baxter believed in witchcraft as a phenomenon susceptible to rational inquiry and that there was evidence for the objective existence of invisible powers and satanic influences mediated by witches. His text was to be later used as a work of reference in the Salem witch trials.
