edwina could barely contain her excitement upon seeing nicholas. “cousin!” without another word, she moved closer towards him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug. although her family had little communication with the sheffields, as they were a great source of pain for her mother, nicholas had always been the exception to the rule. he had always been kind and generous, just as a family member should be. as she pulled away from the hug, a soft chuckle escaped her. “we will always need you, dear cousin, but please, tell me. how are you?”

nicholas touched his heart ❝good, because you all are stuck with me❞ he laughed. he could not imagine cutting mary, kate and edwina off as his aunt and uncle had done. it seemed wrong. mary was a good and kind person, always doing what she could to make others happy. the fact she had decided once to be selfish and do something for herself, only to have the family turn against her, was too much. ❝so tell me about your prince charming. is his name charming? does that make you snow white? or cinderella?❞ he teased.

nicholas laughed ❝me? why not? what did i do?❞ he had spoken to kate about anthony bridgerton, but only to inquire about how the courting was going ❝i did tell you kate was my cousin and like a sister to me. you, having 4 sisters should understand.❞

52.  MEAL :  for both muses to prepare and share a meal together.

lunch that day was just kate and nicholas, which was fine for him, since he'd just found out, kate and the viscount were actually courting. he wanted to make sure his cousin was being treated the way she deserved ❝so, tell me, how has your time with the viscount been?❞

he laughed at that  ❝no i suppose not.❞ nicholas adored his younger cousins. he had never had any siblings, so kate and edwina were the closest thing he had to them. ❝now why doesn’t that surprise me? she has always been a bit guarded.❞ nicholas figured it was because she was scared to loose anyone, like she lost her birth mother and father. ❝have you met this prince? i know there is a few in town, and i was curious if you’ve met him?❞ edwina was the sweetest soul he’d ever met, so he was not at all shocked someone like a prince was interested in her. ❝and you, mary, how are you?❞

the eldest sharma daughter could not help but roll her eyes affectionately at her second cousin’s words . due to them being close in age , the male had immediately taken on the role of big brother to both . “ sorry to disappoint you , nicholas but there is no viscount bridgerton and i , ” kate pointed out before a soft smile graced her lips at the mention of her younger sister , “ he seemed as equally smitten with her as she was with him . ”

nicholas smirked ❝is that so? interesting. i ran into him at whites, and when the topic of your name came up, there was a hint of something in his eye.❞ he knew kate well enough to know that she did not wear her feelings on her sleeve. however, there was the same look in her eye, and he wanted what was best for her. ❝our edwina a princess? i mean she kinda always was, but to make it official? that would be something❞ he laughed a little.

friends came and they left, some remained closer and some were kept at a distance. nicholas was one of the ones that were kept at a distance, he didn’t have the bond with them as he had with simon or luis but he was still a friend in the end. he had already been sitting there for an hour, letting his thoughts trail while trying to figure things out, and was ready to go home when the other took a seat. “by all means join me, tis not as if i were about to leave and head home,” his voice carried a sarcastic tone and it was no fault of anyone but his own, he was simply in a terrible mood for he had been ever since kate pushed him away.

nicholas smirked to himself, after all, he knew anthony was being cheeky.  ❝good, because i need to speek with you❞ he order a brandy and smiled at his old aquaintce. ❝so... i have read whistledown, what is going on between you and miss kate sharma?❞ he took a sip of the brandy when it came. ❝i only ask because she is my cousin, and the closest thing i have to a sister.❞ he was not the sort to tell kate or anyone what to do, kate was too headstrong to listen anyways. it did not mean he wasn’t worried about her, loved her, and wanted what was best for her. he knew anthony was a good person, but whenever the topic of marriage had come up before, he seemed to have a very buisness approach and kate deserved more than just being a wife. she deserved to be loved, to be someone’s partner, to be cherished. he was sure if anthony cared about her, he could do all that, but if it was just for the sake of it, he would be upset.

nicholas just shrugged ❝no nothing..❞ then he thought ❝tea sounds good❞ he knew his family wanted him to find a wife, and he did too, but he always felt a bit different than most men, and it was hard to find someone to accept that.

" you may think i am nagging , but i merely care about you." perhaps it was premature , but she tended to see the good in people, and perhaps their mood was reflecting onto her and she felt the negativity exhuming from them. " is there anything I can do to help, perhaps a pot of tea?"

Backstory: Nicholas is the cousin of Mary Sharma, nee Sheffield. he was only 4 when his cousin Mary left england for india. he had fond memeories of mary, but as he grew up, they never spoke of her. none of the sheffields did. around the age of 18, he found a letter from Mary, and he wrote back. for 2 years he wrote back and forth, and told his parents he was spending some time in india. he wanted to reconnect with his cousins. while they were not happy, he was the only male heir to the sheffield line, and therefore, they did not stop him

nicholas spent 3 years in india, then traveled back and forth every other year. he became a big brother to both kate and edwina, and always saw kate as his cousin, not anything different.

while he does want to get married, he is hesitant, mostly because he knows he's different then most men of the ton. he has never been interested in sex. he is no virgin, but he had fallen in love once, in india, and she then married another. he had tried to think about sex with someone else, but it was impossible. he realized he needed an emotional connection, and even then it wasn't on the forefront of his mind. he was afraid others would judge him....after all, aren't all men supposed to be obsessed with sex?

nicholas was glad to see anthony alone at whites. after what he had read in whistledown, he wanted to speak to the man alone. they had known each other in school, and while never close as say he was with hastings, there was never bad blood between them. he was sure anthony did not know that kate was his cousin, and he wanted to make sure that whatever his intentions were, he would not hurt her. kate and edwina were the closest thing he had to sisters, and he loved them dearly. ❝bridgerton, room for one more? great❞ and he sat down, not giving the other man time say anything.

nicholas was thankful that mary was the only one home. while he certainly wanted to catch up with his second cousins, he wanted to speak to mary. he loved his aunt and uncle, but the fact they cut mary out of their lives, simply for following her heart, never sat right with him. ❝did i read whistedown right? there is something between kate and viscount bridgerton, and edwina and a prince? your daughters certainly know how to make a splash❞ he smiled as he sat down in the drawing room. in truth he was glad that they seem to be finding their way to some decent men. despite the viscount’s reputation, he couldn’t see him being disloyal to a wife, since he was so committed to his family.
