Does the BARDOCK SPECIAL fit in with DB-MINUS & DBS: BROLY?
YES! And here's how...
((I edited the clothing colours of Bardock & his crew from the Bardock Special to make it match the colours they have in the DBS: Broly film.))
DB-Minus begins with Bardock & Leek commiting genocide on an unknown planet. Then, they recieved orders for all Saiyans to come back to Planet Vegeta.
Tumblr media
Bardock returns home and hears how Freeza is asking about the Super Saiyan legend. Bardock begins putting together that Freeza may be planning to kill all Saiyans. (And it is known that Freeza despises how disobedient the Saiyans are due to their pride.)
Instead of getting psychic visions from an alien fish-man, Bardock puts things together on his own and decides to act upon his suspicions. Personally, I like this way better, but both are cool in different ways.
Bardock greets his partner Gine then asks about his sons. After being informed that Raditz is off world, he plans to send baby Kakarrot off planet too. When Gine asks why, he tells her that Freeza is up to something & he senses the presence of death.
That night, Bardock & Gine send Kakarrot to Earth & plan to go get him back if Bardock's suspicions are wrong.
They also inform Raditz, but they tell Raditz that his brother was sent as an infiltration child. Why? Because Freeza could be listening on the communicators.
It's stated that most of the Saiyans should be back in a month or so by a Freeza soldier. However, Freeza is impatient & puts the time limit at 1 month. There is plenty of time for events from the Bardock special to take place within a month's timeframe.
Freeza also mentions "Super Saiyan" & "Super Saiyan God." Many fans think this is bad, but both are Saiyan legends. The legend of the Super Saiyan is more commonly known, while barely few Saiyans know of the Super Saiyan God legend. It's reasonable to believe at least a few Saiyans knew of the SSG legend.
Tumblr media
Bardock's crew even makes a cameo in the DBS: Broly movie.
Tumblr media
Now we mix in the events of the Bardock T.V. special!
Some time after Kakarrot was sent to Earth, Bardock is wearing his "T.V. Special" armor. Bardock & his crew take out another civilization, then Bardock passes out and he needs medical attention. He's been fighting and not resting enough. He wakes from being healed and learns his crew is already conquering another planet.
At this point, Bardock would be putting on different armor similar to the Freeza Force armor he wears in DB-Minus & DBS Broly. (Implying he goes through a lot of armor.)
Tumblr media
(I edited the wristbands to blue instead of red)
When Bardock arrives to join his crew, we get the scene where Bardock finds his crew dead from a betrayal by Freeza. His suspicions are confirmed. Bardock then has his final conversation with the dying Toma.
Tumblr media
This could be the result of Freeza punishing this group for continiously going on missions instead of following his orders to gather on Planet Vegeta.
Bardock grabs Toma's blood-soaked armband & wears it as a bandana.
Tumblr media
Bardock fights and defeats the incoming Freeza's soldiers. But, Dodoria then attacks him & leaves him for dead.
After Bardock survives this near-death battle, his armor is partially destroyed. He returns back to his planet in hopes of rallying warriors to fight Freeza. But, when he tries to convince others, they mock him & say he is overreacting. Bardock realizes he is on his own.
Bardock likely didn't have time to contact Gine.
An injured Bardock rushes out to space to fight Freeza alone. He battles & blasts his way through hundreds of Freeza Force soldiers.
Tumblr media
At some point during the battle, Bardock loses his bandana.
Freeza makes his appearance & throws a Death Ball at Bardock and Planet Vegeta. Bardock fires his Spirit Canon as his final act of defiance.
Tumblr media
Gine & all other Saiyans witness their doom headed straight for them. Bardock's last hopes are in his sons. All of the Saiyans on Planet Vegeta are destroyed...
Some time later, a Saiyan space pod arrives on Earth. Son Gohan then discovers the young Kakarrot then raises him as his own & Grampa Gohan names him "Gokū."
Tumblr media
So, events of the Bardock Special were already implied to have happened, but obviously in slightly different ways. Bardock's crew is shown in DBS: Broly & there is at most a 1 month time period before Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta. This doesn't erase the Bardock Special, it just alters it to fit this canon version of the story that Toriyama wanted to tell. (Although, the Bardock Special was never officially "canon" to begin with. Us fans just assumed and wanted it to be... but that's a different subject all together.)
Also, DB Minus & DBS: Broly don't make Bardock look weaker because he cared about his family & had pride in them. Is King Vegeta weak for caring about his son or nah? Does it make Z Bardock weak because he cared for his crew? We can't be hypocritical.
(In "extra" art that Toyotaro did, he interprets that Bardock's crew was killed while Bardock was headed to Planet Vegeta & their mysterious disappearance is what makes Bardock more suspicious. It's merely fanart and not actually canon. Pages like these are ideas he has for fun or just pictures of characters he wants to draw.)
Tumblr media
(My interpretation of events aren't "canon" either. But, I tried to combine both stories together from what was implied in Toriyama's retelling of Bardock.)

Because of the latest Dragon Ball Super manga chapter, this idea that Goku lacks determination seems to be spreading like fire. I am unsure if some of the people in the fan base have always believed this(doubtful, since I’ve never seen anyone bring that up until recently) but nonetheless, let’s see what Toriyama has to say about this:
https://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/battle-gods-animanga-akira-toriyama/
Tumblr media
He seems to disagree with this thought. And it also seems oxymoronic, doesn’t it? How does one think like this? He doesn’t want to defeat his enemies, he just wants to win. I have my thoughts on this statement, but here are that facts: Goku NEVER lacks determination. Whether he’s determine to win, whether he’s determine to keep his family and friends safe, determination is never something that Goku lacks.

Had A Revealing Bit Of Discourse Last Night.
The long and short of it is, Toyotaro stans believe they understand the lesson being conveyed by Bardock’s story here and it’s… well… it’s not great. (But of course they think it’s good or event brilliant)
See, the reason that Goku can’t beat Gas is because he… lacks determination to win. Now I know I can already hear you thinking, “What do you mean? Goku’s always showed determination to win, he’s even broken his own body to beat an opponent more than once!” Well, I’m sorry to have to break it to you, but according to the Toyotaro Brigade, this simply is not so.
Y’see, Goku… let Piccolo and Vegeta go. Goku didn’t simply kill Freeza when he had the chance. Goku… quit against Cell and didn’t want to rush right into battle vs Super Buu.
Nevermind the logic behind all this. Nevermind that they’d already beaten Vegeta or Freeza, or that he realized that he was actually HELPING Cell via their fight and stepped down knowing Gohan was their only chance. Nevermind not rushing into a fight against an opponent you know can crush you if you have other options (and I say that only allowing the idea that this was the case but that’s a rant for another time), no, that’s simply a lack of determination.
Except… it’s not. It’s a lack of desire to kill and a lack of foolishness in favor of tactics. But these are now weaknesses.
See, Bardock refused to stop fighting Gas. Why? Cuz he was there. Goku saying that he had no reason to fight him earlier? That was a lack of determination, that was “running away”. And as Bardock says, a Saiyan would rather die than run from a fight.
This means that Goku not wanting to fight people he’s got no quarrel with in a battle to the death is… well, cowardly, for lack of a better term. Goku is being painted as a Saiyan who actually doesn’t crave battle, if you can believe that level of absurdity. Or at least, doesn’t crave it as he should. Hell, some are even going so far as to say that Goku refusing to go back into the ROSAT before the Cell Games was proof of that; he could have easily ascended to SSJ2 himself in that time if he REALLY wanted to, y’see, but instead decided to push that onto Gohan as he didn’t really care to win that fight.
Because we all know that Goku would definitely stop short of pushing himself to his limits. Further, they seem to imply that Goku not wanting to kill enemies he doesn’t have to, that defining trait of his… is part of what’s been holding him back. He needs to embrace that, embrace his Saiyan nature, in order to truly be great and ascend to the next level.
Remember this bit right here?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, turns out this is one of the most incorrect misreads of the entire SERIES, according to this line of thinking. This is actually holding Goku BACK from being “Number One”. Now the thing is, I’m not sure this is actually what Toyotaro is gonna do. I wouldn’t be too surprised, as Toyotaro has always had a bit of a Saiyan fetish, but again, nothing is set in stone. At least, not from a published work perspective. But the fact that there are people who actually believe this, and will argue it passionately and vehemently… It’s quite depressing. This fandom really is embracing ideas that are the antithesis of Dragon Ball.
