phoenix's interests outside of law (canon & headcanon):
art; genuinely fits the profile of pretentious art student at his worst, harsh critic of arts of various mediums, especially paintings and sculptures it seems. is likely a talented artist himself who allowed the prospect of making it a career fall wayside; maybe takes a commission here and there. skilled at sketching and physical media painting. definitely burned his hands on glue guns many, many times.
music; specifically and especially pianism. i would guess this probably includes electric keyboard as well. probably has some music mixing knowledge as well, though as of present is far from professional in this regard.
gambling and cardplay, especially poker and casino games. i'm going to say he's likely a fan of liars dice as well, and would enjoy cho-han if it existed in the informal japanifornia aa setting.
considering he's a "good thunker", i think phoenix just enjoys puzzles and riddles in general. kills it at crosswords too.
cycling. doesnt like motorcycles and other motorized bikes, but loves cycling.
retro tech, old internet, ascii art.
mild interest in knitting and embroidery as he ages. don't joke about it.

nsfw stuff im thinking about
- phoenix is relatively inexperienced. his time with dollie (and iris if they slept together) was spent mostly with romantic touch, and any deviation toward sexual put phoenix in a place of receiving. cause like.. there's just no way he topped her beyond purely for her service. he has no problem bottoming--he enjoys it just as much--hes just relatively inexperienced during the majority of the series.
- intimidated by big dicks. nervous about taking them. will take them, though.
- good at oral, better used when the other person dominates during, eg sitting on his face or fucking his mouth. he's very good at being just proactive enough to feel good, but less good if you just want him to get to work and lie back. guide him physically and he's great.
- loves teasing when topping. gets antsy about it when receiving. kind of goes slack/quiet unless they tell him to beg or use his voice.
- likes quickies when bottoming but less so when topping solely because he likes to take his time and make them feel as good as possible.
- talkative when topping, less so when bottoming.

phoenix is prone to idly doodling, and regularly keeps a sketchbook in order to do so when the inspiration strikes. he got in trouble once or twice when giving in to the habit during court proceedings. this is a habit left over from his art school days, and a skill he enjoys nurturing, even if he's largely too shy to share his work with others. he prefers to draw still life, but is known to engage in occasional portraiture.

part of phoenix wants to ask the stranger (drake, his polished nametag says; he notices it astutely, and mentally files the information away) why he was bothering, more-so when he rejects his money. still, he tucks the bills back into the flexible ridge of rubber and leather, his wallet punctuated by a loud click at it shut. his fingers round the emblazed RYU, a patch of false gemstones arranged in the letters; mama had gifted it to him years beforehand and it was still operative.
only after tucking his wallet back into his back pocket does he return his hand to his face, using the cuff of his sleeve to wipe at his eyes. the inflammation wasn't so bad in here, compared to outside--there weren't any allergens in here.
' sorry. ' feenie meekly offers, as if the sight of him offends. maybe it did. he was never particularly vain, but he liked to be clean and presentable, at least--maybe a long, hot shower would scald off the hospital that clung to his skin and hair. ' my.. my.. my girlfriend.. um.. ex-girlfriend, now... i guess.. the court said she's a murderer. but i.. i just don't.. '
he needles his lip with his teeth, quieting until the other man prompts him to watch the door. the request is met with an eager nod, wright decidedly taking a seat that makes it impossible to miss anyone coming in or out of the store. he wasn't exactly sure how he was going to fend anyone off, but, hey, he'd been given a task, and he always followed suit.
Tumblr media
' are you sure i can't pay you? ' phoenix calls, taking his eyes off the storefront for only a second to glance at the employee area he assumes 'drake' has ducked into. a bit of movement outside the glass draws his attention back. ' i-i have a meal plan.. bunch of days i didn't use, cause of... um.. the trial. '
@natorika // from here.
Dollie. That was the chick's name (or nickname, whatever-- it's a weird one regardless). Daryl hadn't ever filed it away considering his remarkable lack of interest; nothing against this guy and his ex-girlfriend, but it was difficult to care about the utter normalcy of young adult rituals. Their lives felt completely separate from Daryl's own, after all.
Tumblr media
He lifts both his hands in surrender, regardless. His name tag-- reading Drake, and neatly cleaned and polished to professionalism-- glints lightly beneath the fluorescent lights. "All right. Whatever.
"Keep the wallet, though. Seriously." The guy's eyes are so wet it'd feel like robbing candy from a baby taking his money. "Just... you look like shit, man."
And considering the guy's the only one in the store, Daryl decides it won't hurt anyone if he closed the register for now to get some cleaning done. It's late enough at night that nobody normal's going to be out buying anything, but early enough that Daryl doesn't expect to see wasted college kids any time soon.
"Sit wherever." Daryl walks around the counter, setting the REGISTER CLOSED sign down on his way. Then, only so the guy doesn't feel totally useless, he ends with, "Watch the door for me, too. Any weirdos come in, you make sure they don't steal nothin'.
"I'm gonna grab the broom out back."
He'll only be gone a few seconds, but still Daryl prays his guest won't get himself in trouble somehow.

“it was a sunny saturday morning, also known as cereal’s time to shine.”
trucy's made a friend. years ago, the presence of one child--let alone two--would've been an irresponsible and virtually impossible mantle for wright, who had barely felt like he'd grown into his skin the moment he began tutelage under mia fey. an adolescent in a man's suit--that's what young adulthood had felt like, even if he were to discount the snowball of exterior factors that made his life exceptional (murder cases, framing, kidnappings, threats--and that left aside all the personal drama, mia's death, miles' disappearance). he had been stretched thin, or perhaps shoved into the membrane of society at too infantile an age. then, he would've floundered, and ushered august on back home (and in the absence of one, as he's learned, taken on his legal case, most likely).
now, he's content to let them play. trucy is enthralling to the average eye, man or woman, child or adult; her expertise with showmans magic was difficult to explain and attention-drawing in equal measures. how bullets the cat would eject from her strategically-safety locked pistol was a wonder for the ages, and truthfully, phoenix didn't know how she managed to pull off every single trick in her repertoire. trucy wasn't clear how or where she'd met august, but phoenix has gotten to know him over time.
daddy, can auggie stay the night? trucy had posited quietly, her small arm and shoulder pressed into his side as he'd fixed supper the night before. phoenix wasn't the best cook, but he got by, and trucy liked to help. it was simply not in phoenix's nature to ignore suffering presented to him--especially when the twines of life and friendship had wound up his daughter with august. his response had been a quiet alright, and here they were, the morning after. both trucy and august awake before phoenix does. he's groggy when he finally rolls out of bed to the muffled sound of the two of them in his kitchen; phoenix deigns to give his body a good stretch, throwing on a tee shirt before he moved to join them. the natural spikes in his hair looked crooked and wild, still unbrushed.
august talks like he's narrating a story for trucy. it was a sunny saturday morning, he begins, carefully retrieving the big box of frosted cornflakes that trucy liked so much, also known as cereal’s time to shine.
' oh, man.. ' phoenix murmurs, wiping the sleep out of his eyes. he acquires a third cereal bowl for himself, then ducks his head into his fridge to bring them the 2% milk. ' ...forgot we don't have any fun cereal left. '
trucy pouts. phoenix stares, then blinks, swiftly recovering. ' just means theres more for you, kiddo. ' his gaze shifts to august. ' you're good with corn flakes? '

miles is so, so pivotal in phoenix's development and outlook on life (him and mia and maya all in equal measures, i'd say), that even if you do not ship wrightworth i feel like its disingenuous to suggest that there's no feelings there; i can see it being either unrequited on miles' side or, more likely, extremely poor handling of intertwined feelings where they both fuck it up, repeatedly, resulting in an awkward tension and an unspoken thing between them that never culminates appropriately (or maybe does, down the line).
my point is that phoenix is a big gay ass. i think the influence on his outlook and in his life by mia, both in her introductory case (feenie / dollie / doug / iris) and in death, would've pushed him into fully pursuing his career all the same, but his drive is strongly related to and inseparably twined with miles.

it sort of goes without saying but phoenix has something of a savior complex. when a situation is shoved on him where he perceives someone in need of saving, it's very difficult for him to look away in a literal or proverbial sense. he feels obligation toward the problem. in a somewhat contradictory fashion, he's also extremely bitchy and frequents unpleasant internal monologues.

to put it plainly, mister (doctor? phoenix was unsure of the appropriate title to use) serra's inability to offer phoenix forthcoming information was going to put a damper on his trial. he wasn't the first former-umbrella expatriate that'd come under phoenix's legal obligations, but he was one of the first wright had accepted the case of. styling him as a former traditionalist luddite swept up in the cradle of cultism was just as likely to harm his case as it was to hurt it. his intelligence was as plain as day, and the juxtaposition between the defense of background and character versus his tenure with the bio-organic pharmaceutical company created a hard wall of skepticism from whatever presiding gallery there would be.
phoenix remembers reading his name on a list of subpoenas related to the raccoon trials. luis serra navarro. he had resigned just before the destruction of that midwestern city, though phoenix highly doubted this was a calculated move on his clients behalf. few relished or desired the destruction of an entire town; no, if he had to guess, the scorch-the-earth approach had been to eradicate evidence of umbrella's failings.
and here he was, looking only a touch worse for wear in comparison to the professional, sterile umbrella ID photo pinned to the manilla folder phoenix has open between them, a few years older, a few more glancing scars.
' mister.. ---.. er, doctor? serra--you prefer serra, right? not navarro? --- ' wright pages over another few paragraphs of typed and printed text, sucking in the skin of his lower lip until it nearly bruised. ' i'm gonna need you to be honest with me, alright? completely sincere. your file doesn't aid your defense all that much. former umbrella is never a good look in the eyes of the court, not since raccoon city. ' phoenix closes the folder in order to force luis's eyes on his, his own studious, sharp, and soft shades of brown in this light. ' whatever you did in service of umbrella doesn't matter in this case--but what you did in valdelobos and it's surrounding territory, i need you to tell it to me. '

phoenix THINKS he's stable and a gentle love practicioner but proves that idea wrong time and again both platonically and romantically. the things he does to save Maya proves it platonically and his soul crushing devotion to miles whether they're together or unrequited (or some heinous third thing) proves it romantically. hell, even his relationship with dollie.. he swallowed a glass vial for her and continued to defend her after she attempted to incriminate him. there is no real such thing as subtle and slow and casual w phoenix even tho he pretends there is; there is only a deep mountain moving devotion. he will put himself in the line of fire for anyone he loves enough.

there's something about phoenix being like. so cocksure and confident and a little bit spicy. like he doesn't ever actually know what he's gunning for in a trial until it's in his head but he's so good at delivering that you wouldn't ever know he's making it up as he goes. and that confidence transfers to the bedroom and with his partner sometimes, if he's in the mood, since i do think phoenix is a hard vers. but he can certainly press in his and his partners intimate life. this goofy loser boy clown of a lawyer takes every job he does with a certain air of determination, it is something he WILL see out to the end, and thats true of sex too. if his bottom isn't thoroughly pleased by the end when he's topping he makes sure they are and won't take anything less than an emphatic satisfaction.
likewise when he bottoms he's usually pretty confident too, unless he really really has a high regard of the other person (like w miles)
