What images come to your mind when someone mentions the Great Smoky Mountains? Do you picture the rolling hills of mountains basking in sunlight? Maybe you have seen pictures of the mountains covered in fall foliage. Or do you think of the numerous rivers and waterfalls? Perhaps you’re an Appalachian Trail hiker and you think of the endless miles of hiking found within the National Park.
Some of the most well-known images of the Smoky Mountains are of the endless sights of mountain layers often ablaze with the amazing color palettes that the sunlight provides.
However, not everyone who visits the Great Smoky Mountains National Park will be treated to a perfect view. This was certainly the case when I visited the park for the very time after a trip to Montreat, North Carolina.

Here’s to an amazing hiking partner who helped capture photographic evidence that I actually hike. Contrary to the evidence, I am not always hidden behind the camera. (at Pinnacles of Berea)

I might be a little weird, but I would much rather deal with the wind atop a bald than be stuck in the forest. The evening and morning views are to die for. Anyone else? Or am I alone? (at Shining Rock Wilderness)

Due to the clouds in the mountains I almost didn’t get to experience my first Blue Ridge Mountains sunrise. But even with the clouds it still turned out pretty magical! (at Blue Ridge Mountains)

I spent a couple days this past weekend backpacking and living out of the Jeep. Needless to say I’m looking forward to sharing some of the photos I took over the next couple weeks. So stay tuned! (at Pisgah National Forest)

We got several inches of snow this week in Kentucky. Meanwhile my family is texting me from Arizona about their 80+ degree weather. Needless to say looking at photos of Saguaro National Park helps me think warm thoughts! . Check the link in my bio to find the blog post about my trip to Saguaro in December! . . The early morning sunrise at the Grand Canyon is the perfect opportunity to get out and see the depth and layers of the canyon. The soft light and shadows creating by the rising sun creates a beautiful picture across the entire canyon. A Grand Canyon sunrise should be on everyone’s bucket list. Skyline Drive curves around mountaintops and pushes through clouds at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. With plenty of spots to pull off and take in the view, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a mountain sunrise. The speed limit is 35 mph, so plan to take your time and make sure to watch for wildlife in the road. Photo by N. Lewis, National Park Service.
