When people ask why Takemichi went back in time after Bonten instead of staying in the future to save Mikey and I have to hold myself back from yelling: HE FUCKING TRIED THAT!!!
First: Takemichi asks Naoto and tries to go back in time. So yes, that's part of it. But when he finds out that he can't, he makes a decision.
Everyone, from Draken to Chifuyu, is trying to convince Takemichi that it's fine. That Mikey is fine and happy and on his own path. That Takemichi shouldn't pursue Mikey anymore.
The only person who decides to help Takemichi, who feels the same way, is Kazutora. As Kazutora puts it, he hasn't seen any of them in many years, so when he reunited only to find that his close friends had seemingly abandoned Mikey, he is unhappy. Takemichi and Kazutora, both missing ten years of their lives, both notice the problem.
When Takemichi watches the video left to him, Mikey tells him to not go after him, to not help him, to live his life. And, for a short amount of time, Takemichi abides by this. And some people say the story should have ended like that, despite the fact that there are so many things being set up.
But Takemichi remembers what Mikey told him. He remembers that he made a promise to pull Mikey back from the edge. And Takemichi doesn't break his promises. He's not going to listen to a version of Mikey that clearly isn't completely in control of himself (which is an interesting metaphor for mental health).
But, when Kazutora tells him to stop, he finally agrees. His wedding is in 3 days and so he decides to stick around a little and then go home. But Mikey and Sanzu find him. They ambush him.
And Takemichi says nothing about wanting to save Mikey, nothing about wanting to abandon everyone, nothing about time leaping. He just asks Mikey to attend his wedding. That's all. And Mikey shoots him, and Mikey jumps, and Takemichi catches him because the whole time Takemichi has been told to save Mikey.
Takemichi doesn't mean to time leap then. He doesn't mean to erase that present. It just happens. Takemichi tries to save Mikey in the future.
And it doesn't work.

jokes/memes/shitposting aside, i'm not surprised that Kaito is supposed to be Book Smart according to Kodaka. there's so many different kinds of Intelligence, like, legitimately. God maxxed out Kaito's enthusiasm and ability to retain information but forgot to turn off the ADHD switch and hotheadedness. we all grew up with a Kaito which i think is what makes him Lovable

I don't wanna derail the post but I saw someone talking about how the way Kokichi died would have been the most ideal to him, because there wouldn't be a body for anyone to see how he felt in his final moments. So he gets to die without that mask ever slipping off or for anyone to see his true self even in his final moments...
... Except, Kaito did.
Kaito knows how Kokichi behaved in his final moments. Whether or not he cried or screamed or wailed. Whether or not he was scared or at peace or thought he deserved the death he brought upon himself. He knows his final words, or if he didn't have anything left to say.
He knows. He knows, and brought that secret with him to his own grave.
