The Fantastic Four Movies Vs. Comics
Three times Marvel studios has tried to adapt the Fantastic Four comics to the big screens, resulting in three massive failures. The Fantastic Four comics were the first superhero team produced by marvel comics which led the way for the company’s rising. Despite the iconic nature of the characters and their ability to work together in the comics, Marvel has been unable to capture the spirit of the team in the movies. Despite a great story concept and character development in the comics, the movies fall short, with disconnected characters and lack of simpatico.
When trying to describe how badly the movies were adapted from the comics, it is hard to choose which points to bring up, since there were so many. To begin the origin stories of the 2004 and 2015 movies were completely different from the original, while the attempt was to relate better to newer times, the lack of the cold war theme damaged and distorted the plotline.  Further, the development of the movies, especially the 2015 version, were slow. The movie is filled with the characters' origin stories and drags on, only by the last half hour of the movie do the viewers see a single battle. Next the villains in the movies were not the same as in the comics, Doctor Doom did not exist in the comics and the Silver surfer had a rushed introduction and lacked depth. The four main characters also lacked depth and relied heavily on their powers in the movies. While in the comics the team works flawlessly together, the movies focus on their flaws and inability to communicate with each other properly. In the 2004 movie Doctor Doom turns the Thing against Mister fantastic much too easily, while Marvel tried to adapt this from the comics, Doctor Doom did not do so by controlling his mind. In the 2015 Mister Fantastic abandons the team and only after he is forced back, does she try to help reverse the effects of their powers.
Lastly, the character development in the movies was almost nonexistent, while the comics intended the characters to be relatable, the movies caused them to become stereotypical. The characters rely heavily on their powers and each power forms the personality reflected in the movies. Human Torch is overly hot headed, the invisible girl’s affections are unseen and misunderstood by Mister Fantastic, The Thing is the only stable character and he is too slow in changing his view on his power, and lastly Mister Fantastic is too oblivious and flip flops between being the reliable and unreliable teammate. While Marvel could have used the characters' positive traits to amplify their ability to help within the team, they took a negative approach that disturbed and caused conflict within the team. The characters are dysfunctional and thrown together, yet in an unexpected turn of events in the last moments the team seamlessly works together leaving the audience with whiplash. Marvel should have gradually developed the positive sides of the characters leading to their final seamless traits instead of focusing on their flaws the entire film and throwing the positive in by the final battle.
While the intentions of the Fantastic Four movies were to bring justice to the iconic comics, the movies were sorely lacking. The movies felt rushed in the final battles scenes and dragged out in the origin stories. The comics were a meld of great battle scenes and teamwork, while the movies were full of inner team conflict and unimportant filler. Let’s hope that if Marvel ever receives the rights to Fantastic Four again they will rely on the comics for guidelines and scripts, instead of distorting the stories.
