SECRETS CAN KILL RE RATING (Spoilers!!!)
(link for the spreadsheet at the end of the post) The first game in the series (technically). The first game I played for this project. My mom and I both love Nancy Drew games and we used to play them together all the time, asking each other for help on puzzles in our separate save files, teasing the other with spoilers. One of my memories of this is hearing that they had remastered Secrets Can Kill. I had never played the original because at the time we were playing them on the CDROMs we bought from Best Buy (i'm fucking old lads). I think if I had played the original, my criticism of the remake would be much harsher, but ignorance is bliss. (yes i used a walkthrough at some points, i'm very stupid)
Anyway: tl;dr, this one is boring. There's five characters total, which isn't a bad thing at all, except that I never cared about any of them at any point. The students are being blackmailed by Jake, and supposedly all suspected of killing him. Except you're never given a reason to think they're guilty except that..they're there. It's super low stakes for them, and really none of it is enough to kill a guy over. Not to mention the whole character of "Detective Beech." He's just. Yeah. Don't be alone with him.
I did very much enjoy finding Jake's clues and deciphering his messages, but that's about the only interesting part of this one. I was tearing my hair out over the layout of the school (especially since my game would crash if I clicked down the hall too fast ;-; ). You could go in a circle three times and never be in the same room again.
All this to say, I guess for one of the shorter ND games, it isn't too bad. It's definitely perfect for beginners. The puzzles aren't too difficult and it's a nice way to dip a toe into the world of point and click mystery games.
RATING: 4.5-5/10 | ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆
