Week 13
Tumblr media
This observation still life was a bit challenging for me. I could’ve exaggerated the hues to get more of a playful look, and maybe add different colors for the reflection of the grapes. It’s not done yet so I still have a chance to work with diff. colors. Starting off with transparent colors helps build a glowing effect. The more layers you add the darker it gets.

Color Swatches
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The color swatches on the right are the ones I mixed. This took me some time to complete because I wanted to nearly get exact colors. This assignment was really fun!

Week 12

I thought it was interesting how some colors alone appear cool meanwhile against a stronger cooler color it can appear warmer in comparison. There can be a color like yellow, which is initially a warm color become a cool yellow 😎.

Week 11
Colors
I like every color there is, no discrimination, but my favorite color is BLUE! Although I like every color I won’t wear every color bc not everything in my opinion matches with my complexion. For example you won’t ever see me wearing a light pink lipstick or a very light pigment of any color as a lipstick it’ll look so unnatural for me because it’s not a color well suited for my tone. As for clothing I like to match the season! Spring and summer is for florals, soft pastel color, or very saturated bright colors. And for fall/winter more subtle warmer colors maybe even nude tones, browns, white even, burnt orange. The colors in nature during a certain season definitely influence what colors we wear when we wear them and how we wear them!
Colors associated with culture
For western culture- In funerals we wear black to mourn the death of someone. for Indian culture- for their weddings the bride wears the color red. This color symbolizes the divine spark. White is worn at funerals for mourning, but satis widows used to be forced to wear white.
Colors and their relation to emotion
Blue makes me feel calm, serene, electric In general. Depends of the shade. Lighter and softer blue tones gives me calm vibes. Brighter and saturated blue tones give me feel electric. red makes me feel sensual, sexy. When worn. When I see red it is like an alerting feeling to me because red is used to highlight like danger and used for stop signs and stop lights, so when I see red it makes me pause.
yellow/ orange makes me feel sunny, happy, excited. When I see the sun this is what I feel, fresh and happy. Also makes me think it’s a nice day to venture and hang out.

Week 9
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is some progress I made.. I find it a little difficult with trying to create layers of shadows with just adding white. I’m so used to starting off with adding shadows a leaving areas light that to think in a sense of reverse and starting with adding highlight to maintain shadows is a little challenging. I do enjoy it though and I did go in with a bit of umber and medium to help preserve some of the shadows I failed to keep a little dark.

This is my lighting set up for my paper maquette. My intentions for this painting is invoke the emotion of being a little flustered combined with a strong sense of adoration. From The way the word “feels” is set up in this not so orderly fashion gives sort of like a whoosy feeling and to the MWAH in all caps in this cursive style gives off a feeling of fascination or passion and I think the word itself MWAH plays into what I intend for this painting with a strong positive emotion.
The lighting set to the far left side creates the shadows that helps the theme I have for the word, it’s continues in an off balanced style. The word MWAH is being highlighted on the edges of each letter. This feature emphasizes that allure the word conveys. For the composition I wanted both words placed near each other so I’ll be able to capture them both on the canvas where the words take up the entire space of the canvas. I thought it to be more visually pleasing if the words were atop each other instead of being side by side. The best way I can explain my intention for this painting is maybe by comparing it to having a crush where you feel whimsical and off balanced, but that feeling is strong and pulling. Or just simply being in love with life.. and everything just feels MWAH! 💋
Can yah dig it? 😉

Week 8- Cellophane Activity
Tumblr media
While layering the colors I noticed how for the color yellow would increase in saturation and darken subtly. The darkest colors to layer were red and blue, but layering those two colors on black I think increased the intensity of the color with a hint of that red or blue showing slightly. It made me think of the color wheel assignment, adding black to a hue, how it’s extremely dark but you can see some color peaking through. Combining yellow and green ofc made a pretty lime green. Layering red and green produced a much darker red. Layering on top of dark colors did not intensify the richness of the hue, instead it served as a shade. This exercise really helped to show how layering colors transparently effects the hue and shades.

Maquette

feels MWAH 😽
I wanted the word feels to be lowercase and assorted to look flustered to put more emphasis on mwah. I want mwah to be light and airy and a script font can portray that especially with its swift movements of curves.

Combining Words
For this activity, I chose these ten words.. cathartic, expressive, motion, swift, yes, excitement, feels, joy, flow, and love. There was no particular reason for choosing these words other than just feeling drawn to them at this time. Once we were moved into groups we combined and I liked a lot of the words Leandra and Sarah had. We mixed and matched words that were opposing. Combining also made the meaning change quite a bit, for instance Sarah had the word brain alone then added empty and that changed the meaning drastically. Some weren’t even actual words, they were sounds and Leandra had a “word” mwah! And I thought that to be so cute.. I was also very drawn to the word feels that I’d written and so I combined the two! Feels mwah. 😽

Week 7 Artist using Text
Najah and Tevya
We chose Wayne White as our inspiration for the quick painting of text assignment. Wayne white is a painter that paints bold colored words in various font styles on a landscape background. It’s very intriguing to look at. While flipping through my sketch book, I stumbled on something I drew and wanted to incorporate one of my own designs and Teyva thought it to be a good idea! I thought it was a lovely idea how Tevya described how the word should be formatted. We'd piggy back and forth ideas until we realized how time was ticking and we needed to execute our ideas. & This is what we developed. Don’t we make a great team?! I think so 🙂‍↕️

Left would be considered high contrast, extreme dark areas against very light areas. Using opposite ends of the grey scale.
Right would be considered low contrast, light grey tones can portray a softness to an image. Low usage of dark grey.

Week 4- Opaque Painting
Tumblr media
Working opaquely with oils is quite interesting. The consistency of the oil paint alone is not as fluid as working with the transparent paint application. It’s less of a glide, but you do get more depth in color. I like the way it looks, it’s less blotchy. Starting the painting was more intimidating. With using medium you can easily wipe off, but with opaque painting it’s not as forgiving, but again you can still work with it. It could also be challenging if you’re trying to lighten an area that has a lot of paint, the surrounding paint can mix with it and defeat the purpose of creating that lightness.. but once it dries you can paint over it.. overall I think I like the effects of opaque painting much greater than that of the transparent painting!

This is great especially as a first time user of oil paint! Usually ppl are hesitant to start, but you just went in a tackled this painting! Kudos to you 😀👍🏾.. Also think you did really well with the proportions :)
Tumblr media
Yesterday's class was my first time painting with oils ever, and the first time, I've really worked on a painting in around 10 years. Using oil paint is challenging yet very rewarding. It's an interesting technique to just remove the paint that had been previously added to create areas of lightness. Oil paint reacts to the brushes differently depending on them being synthetic or hair. I'm excited to recreate this piece next week with more experience.

Although I have experience in working with oil paint. I have not done an under painting like this where you have to wipe away the color for the highlights! Using the medium has definitely had its challenge's for me. Sometimes the color would wipe away as I tried to apply more leaving visible brush strokes. Following the fat over lean rule is very important to achieve certain qualities of the colors contrast! Using less medium in certain areas helped to keep the color dark and less transparent. The medium also helped to make a variation of tones through transparency which is a pretty cool effect. I also liked the effect of wiping away color instead of adding white. Overall, I enjoyed working on this painting.

Week 2- Unconventional Art Materials
Tumblr media
Javier Orfón
Lucía Spondylurus Nitidus 2021
Medium- Inkjet print
This is a photograph of a leaf that looks as if it’s been carved into or burned to achieve this detail. The art piece itself will not last very long at all, maybe a couple of days before it starts to decay and wither away. The photograph will allow this artwork to become everlasting! This is an unconventional and creative approach to creating art.
