Բա��և comes from the word բարի, which means kind. You can say բարի լույս, meaning kind light, to say good morning, and բարի գիշեր, meaning kind night, to say good night. Some people argue that բարև also stems from the word ար, the heathen God of the sun in old times. Today արև means sun.

Another form of greeting is ողջույն, literally meaning greeting (singular). The verb to greet someone is ողջունել, or ողջույն տալ (lit. to give a greeting).

The Armenian alphabet was created by Mesrop Mashtoc in 405/406. Prior to 301, when Armenia accepted Christianity, Armenia was zoroastrian, like its neighbor the Byzantine empire. At the time many Armenians spoke Persian, and manuscripts were written encouraging the worship of multiple deities. After the acceptance of Christianity, these manuscripts were destroyed along with the temples created to worship deities.

There were originally 36 letters, which could be arranged as an equilateral triangle and used as a counting system. The Armenian word for alphabet is այբուբեն, literally meaning ayb and ben, the names of the first two letters. The first letter is այբ, representing աստված (God), the last is քե, representing Քրիստոս (Christ).

The very first book translated to Armenian was the Bible, and it is considered the queen of translations.
