I know this isn’t a novel observation but I’ve been reading a lot of articles about colonial and imperial policy (specifically demography history papers) & one pattern that keeps coming up is that colonial/imperial governments try to institute what can reasonably be described as “good” social policies in colonised places (like vaccine programs, funding for schools, etc, things that are associated with the smooth functioning of a state), and these are often rejected by local colonised governments and people because like obviously they don’t trust colonial/imperial administrators wanting to become involved with their healthcare or education. And what often ends up happening is this backlash against “progressive” policies because they’re being pushed by colonial governments, so you get shit like the Catholic Church running all the primary schools in Ireland because they refuse to open British-funded state schools, or people refusing to immunize their children because those “public goods” are (rationally & understandably) associated with things like US imperial population management programs. And then these colonial & imperial administrators turn around and say look! These people won’t even accept money for schools and vaccines! Look how backwards they are! And paint colonised populations as Great Rejectors of Democracy which western populations then readily eat up. Just a really horrendous feedback loop of misery that generates a lot of ‘secondary’ death and violence on top direct colonial oppression and plunder

I don’t think any movie will make me feel the same ethereal sense of otherworldly sorrow and disembodied awe as that scene in Lord of the Rings where the loyal son is sent off into a doomed battle to please his vindictive father while Pippin sings a mourning song of his people

other than blatant racism and countless microaggressions, the damning power june/juniper wields so easily—that publishing yields so easily—is the silencing of Asian voices and systematically disadvantaging Asians trying to emerge in the industry.
athena's morbid death as the brutalization of women of color, the silencing of blunt storytellers of history, of oppression
candice's blacklist as doors shutting in the face of creative industry hopefuls, the silencing of those who could say something in the room where it happens
skylar's punishment as the ruining of children's dreams, the undermining and silencing of aspiring BIPOC artists, creatives, and world-shakers
throughout yellowface, june/juniper bitches about how much at a disadvantage she is compared to athena, then thoughtlessly wields this axe over asian women around her and breaks no sweat. she barely remembers candice's name, she couldn't care less about skylar, and she tears athena down again and again and milks her legacy for all she's worth

Absolutely insane lines to just drop in the middle of an academic text btw. Feeling so normal about this.

please let me apply this to my unfinished projects rn. i am lying on my bed immobilized doing nothing. let this be real 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
🌿 Quote: "When nothing is done, nothing is left undone." - Tao Te Ching
📝 Notes: This quote reflects the Daoist concept of wu wei, or "effortless action," which emphasizes the natural flow of life and the idea that sometimes, by not forcing things, everything falls into place.
💭 Reflection: How can I apply the principle of wu wei in my life? Where can I find moments of stillness and non-action?
🙏 Mantra/Prayer: "In the stillness of non-action, I find peace. I trust in the natural flow of life, knowing that everything unfolds as it should."

pretty funny that arendt suggests “oriental cultures” are more prone to despotism because they are ontologically illiberal or smth as if liberal capitalist democracies in the west don’t clearly provide a perfect breeding ground for complacency and obedience in the face of fascism
