My thoughts on IU’s Through the Night MV

I’m kind of nervous to call this an MV review as I’ve never written such a thing before. Well here we go…

The MV starts off with adult long-haired IU in red, leafing through some letter paper. Then, the music recorder/player triggers regretful memories of her younger short-haired self, who never managed to send out her letter to convey her feelings for someone.

Tonight, I’ll send the glow of a firefly (from that day) to somewhere near your window.

The bright memories of them spending time together are symbolised by the glow of the firefly and sending this glow to the other is a subtle and demure expression of love from a young girl. 

Just like letters on the sand where waves were, I feel you’ll disappear to a far off place.

It seems that due to certain circumstances, they had to part ways and she was afraid that time would gradually wash away her memories of him and of them. Probably every night she would write a letter which is never sent. Most of the MV shows time slipping away as she thinks of him. We see her come out of the shower and start to write another letter to him, this time, she affixed a stamp on the envelope.

Tonight, I’ll send the glow of a firefly (from that day) to somewhere near your window.

Through the night, she contemplates whether ‘tonight’ is the night that she’ll confess her feelings for him. How many ‘tonights’ has it been anyway? Eventually, the letter is still cast aside and not sent. Adult long-haired IU reads a letter that she wrote when she was younger and keeps it back in its envelope. 

Perhaps he will never know. 

[Edit 25/3: The red flower on the stamp (baekilhong / red flower of 100 days) represents remembrance of a friend who has passed away. So possibly, she could not send the letter because he was no longer able to receive it anyway.]

IU’s clear ringing voice is still the same as ever. The song ‘Through the Night’ makes the most of the clear and lyrical voice colour unique to IU. Distinctive in its 'half air half sound’ quality, the audience can hear her genuine vocals, which are simple and unadorned. There is no addictive hook that sticks in your ear immediately. Instead, a calm and beautiful melody fills the whole song. Even though it might seem mundane when you listen to it initially, there is a strong chance that the song gets better the more you listen to it. It is a song high in quality that allows us to sense the confidence IU has for her 2nd pre-released song and title song.
