The Second Chance not all of us Get

When we hear that something terrible has happened to someone we always have this feeling deep down that it’s never gonna happen to us. It’s never gonna happen to me. I guess those people had this thought too, until that terrible thing did happen to them. I know I was one of them.

Last April I’ve been in a serious car accident. It was a miracle that I survived it with a minor injury. I was extremely lucky. I don’t think I would’ve if it weren’t for my seatbelt and the airbag. Anyways, when the accident happened all I kept thinking of was: oh no, so this is it? This is how my story ends. I don’t want to die. Not on this day, alone in this car. I thought that something was gonna stab me or hit my head. A tree. A metal bar or something… I didn’t think at all that I had any chance to survive it. But I did, and for that I will be forever grateful.

After the accident, I was really depressed for a long time. I kept questioning my actions and blaming myself even though it was not really my fault. I hated myself. All of the things that used to matter didn’t matter anymore. I couldn’t be a part of any conversation because all of the things people talked about seemed small and meaningless. It felt like a waste of time. I didn’t want any of my friends to find out about it because I didn’t want to see or talk to anyone… I got better with time. But I keep having these nightmares where I’m in a car accident. I couldn’t drive for months. Being in a car felt so scary for me. It still does sometimes when I’m not the one driving. I keep imagining these scary scenarios in my head.

I had the opportunity to survive and tell my story. Many people do not. It makes me sad when I think about them. They never got to experience the feeling of being relieved that the accident is over and they’re okay. That they can continue to live their lives and be with their loved ones.

I am thankful that I had the chance to go home and be able to see my family and friends again. I am thankful that I still have the chance to hug them, kiss them and tell them how much I love each and everyone of them.

The reason why I decided to share my story is because life is short. Anything could happen to any of us no matter how careful you are. So just be thankful that you’re here, you’re alive. Tell everyone you care about how much you love them. That friend you haven’t talked to in years because you’ve been so busy. Call them! Before it’s too late. Try to be happy, grateful, generous, kind and forgiving. Being angry or hateful is not worth it. Appreciate everyone and everything you have. If you lost someone, stop wasting your time being so sad about losing them. Instead try to be grateful for all of the time you got to spend with them. Do something good for the universe. Any random act of kindness. Be the person you want everyone to remember when you’re gone. And most importantly, be thankful, for everyone and everything you have.
