Taylor Swift Album Openers Ranked

these are ranked by how well i think they open the album, not how much i like them personally :)

1. ...Ready for it?: just brings all of the rep energy, hits on all of the themes of the album, gets you so excited, and nothing is more iconic than starting the album with an *ahem*

2. State Of Grace: objectively just one of her best songs ever, sets up why/how she fell in love so you can understand the impact of the heartbreak, perfect song top to bottom

3. the 1: i'm doing good on my some new shit, that's all, idk if it makes sense but it literally sounds like you're being lead down a path into a forest, sonically sets the album up so well

4. Fearless: literally how does a 17 year old come up with the concept of being fearless in love, it's so fun and sparkly and butterflies and everything, also a great parallel to "change"

5. Welcome To New York: feel like this might be a hot take but idc, she's setting the scene for the story, this whole album is nyc-coded and she's literally pulling you into that world

6. Lavender Haze: everyone remembers the moment they first heard this song, an amazing sonic intro to the album, in hindsight the delulu-ness of this song makes it so much better

7: Fortnight: such a slay song but there are other options on the album, sets up that she's literally insane, best outro on any of her songs

8. willow: sonically does such a great job but thematically just doesn't fit for me, evermore is about endings and this song is just not about that, the witchy vibes are it though

9. I Forgot That You Existed: transitions us from rep to lover i guess, no other song on the album could be the opener but just doesn't really fit with what the rest of the album is about

10. Mine: pls don't hate me, this is in my top 3 for track 1's i promise, it just doesn't fit thematically with the album at all, the rest of the songs are a letter to a specific person and this one is fiction so it must be this low

11. Tim McGraw: debut stans i'm sorry you always get done dirty, love this song but this album doesn't have a strong concept so the opener doesn't have a lot of impact, still an underrated song tho
