EVERYDAY MONSOON PROBLEMS OF PETS
EVERYDAY MONSOON PROBLEMS OF PETS
Rainy season brings a lot of fun, greenery and cool climate with it for us & our pets.  However, it also invites a lot of health disorders as well. Dealing with illnesses associated with rainy season is not very difficult. You should be aware of certain quick remedies if your pet falls ill due to the rainy season. Hence, as pet owners, this is the best time to put ‘prevention is better than cure’ into action.
There are diseases which are preventable and can be dealt with at home with vet’s guidance, while some will require proper medical attention, otherwise, diseases can turn fatal and create a lot of issues for you & your dear pet. According to vets, ticks and fleas are the most common problems that most pets face during monsoon which haunts most pet owners. The best way to prevent tick infestation is to avoid taking your dog for a walk on grass and also keep their sleeping area free of mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and bugs. You must remember to use anti-tick preparations such as dog collars, shampoos, lotions or powders to protect your pet from ticks and fleas.
Pets are prone to get tick fever during the rains and in some cases could even lead to kidney failure. Almost one in three dogs suffer from tick fever in the city. Besides, they can also get jaundice if they drink the wrong kind of water. Rainy season is usually the breeding ground for water-borne diseases and other intestinal and stomach infections. Vets advise keeping dogs as dry as possible and keep them from eating grass.
It is very hard to keep a check on your pet, as he is dirty the next minute you give him a bath. Using too much water can result in skin infections in your hairy pet. Thus, the best option would be to use a dry shampoo and clean him thoroughly. These shampoos do not require the use of water and can be used to get rid of dirt and grime from the coat. A hairdryer can be used to dry the damp hair and then trendy monsoon raincoat can protect them from getting wet again. Coolers are not advisable as they further increase the humidity and stress due to heavy rainfall.
Dogs do not sweat much through their skin which makes them susceptible to fungal and yeast infections and may result in a lot of discomfort resembling an itchy rash or lump around the eyes, ears or muzzle or dominating the pads of their feet and having a need to scratch. Scratching makes skin diseases become more severe. Sometimes the infections may even cause death so it is important to keep the fur dry. This can be prevented by cleaning the skin with a clean dry towel and dabbing anti-fungal powders or ointments for localized infection.
Humidity during the rainy season causes the spread of leptospira among pets that can further be passed on to human beings and cause serious problems. Pets contract these infections through rats so it is necessary to control the spread of such diseases among domestic animals to prevent its outbreak among human beings. Also, pets are very susceptible to worms in this rainy season so deworming is absolutely necessary for them.
Storm phobia has been proven to be real, with many pets experiencing this. A pet can go from tame and placid to agitated, nervous and overly clingy in a matter of minutes once a storm has started. You can see symptoms like painful static shocks in the build-up to a thunderstorm, cause a large amount of stress and fright, may experience joint pain or stiffness due to a change in barometric pressure, etc.
A pet’s claws are prone to get very dirty and nails must be trimmed regularly so as to avoid yeast infections or skin infections. One might judge if their pet is really uncomfortable if they keep on licking themselves, or are scratching their paws against their heads a lot which is an indication of ticks being present in their body.
These pet care tips are vital for any pet caretakers and must be taken to account thoroughly so as to provide for a healthy, suitable environment for their pets which was promised to them in the very first place in this dirty, vulnerable weather of monsoon rains.

Tailwagers Pet Grooming Salon
Tailwaggers Pet Salon is the brain child of Urmila Dabholkar and Gauri Keskar. They are proud to be the first dog salon in the country (with a mention in the Limca book of records for this feat). They have got featured in prestigious magazines and newspapers as the entrepreneurs who have taken the first step towards introducing dog grooming in India. Their goal is to provide quality services, which leave your pet looking and smelling beautiful and most importantly feeling comfortable, every time you visit them. Apart from this, what is topmost on their minds is the health and overall well-being of your beloved pet & everything they do is designed with their safety and comfort in mind. There are a variety of ways to soothe your dog in the salon while being groomed, and one of these is music. Every detail of the instrumental music that they play- the tempos, rhythm, keys, note intervals, chord structures and plucking techniques - are carefully arranged to promote progressive peace and relaxation. Dogs usually begin to relax after listening for just a few minutes. Our compilation of INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC has instruments such as the santoor, flute & sitar. All their groomers, needless to say, are huge dog lovers and have trained with us for many years. They can proudly say that even dogs with an attitude are treated with a lot of love and patience by their dedicated team of groomers and more often than not they manage to get our way around them and groom and style them too!!!
1.  Tell us something about you and your grooming experiences with dogs?
Tailwaggers is a first of it’s type salon in India which is only for pets. It is a unique idea of Urmila Dabholkar and Gauri Keskar. Our names have also been recorded in Limca book of records as entrepreneurs who took the first step in providing world class grooming facilities to dogs.
2.  What motivated you to start a dog grooming service?
As more and more people are indulging in keeping pets it is hard for pet owners to keep them neat and clean as they are not aware of various products needed to groom a pet. This made us think that like humans why isn’t there a salon for dogs which can provide good quality grooming service so that even pets can look beautiful and smell great. It then struck us that why don’t we start a salon for pets.
3.  What are the biggest challenges in grooming dogs?
Since a salon for pets is a new concept in Mumbai many people are not aware about it. Another challenge is that many people want a grooming service for their pet but they don’t know where they can get it. Slowly we are successful in tapping into this population who want their pets to enjoy a healthy and glowing coat. Many pets are cleanliness friendly but they do not co-operate in grooming services so there are chances that they might hurt themselves but nothing of that sort has ever happened in our salon.
4.  How has customer feedback motivated you in your grooming work?
All my customers are happy to get a grooming service for their pet as it makes them look good and beautiful. Most of the customers visit us on a regular basis so that their pet can indulge in nail clipping which protects their pets as well as others from getting hurt.
5.  Do you have any advice for new/aspiring pet parents?
Like humans even dogs require trimming of hair and clipping of nails at regular intervals. Since people get dogs at a young age you should visit our salon with your pet so that they learn to remain calm and stress free in a salon. Bringing them at a salon will also help them to socialize with other dogs as well.
6.  Have you noticed any change in the mindset of pet parents over the years?
People are opting for breeds like Shih Tzus, which have longer hair so it is important to indulge them in grooming service which enables them to enjoy a healthy and shiny coat. Many pet owners also inform us about things to which their pet is allergic to and it helps groomers at our salon to avoid products which contains those things.
7.  Any tips that you would like to give to pet parents regarding grooming?
Indulge your pets in a grooming service while they are young so that they become familiar with hair trimming, nail clipping, and various other processes. It also protects them from experiencing stress when you visit other places with your pet so that he can enjoy a pleasant outing.
8.  What are the common mistakes that are done by pet parents with regards to grooming?
Most people get a pet but they forget to give their four-legged pet a grooming service at regular intervals. As a result, their pet’s coat becomes dirty and they lose their beautiful look. Based on your pet’s breed you need to get your pet groomed at regular intervals so he looks his best.
9.  How can pet parents reach you?
I am available on 9820127572.
People can reach us on 9820127572 (Andheri) and 9820527572 (Bandra). You can even connect with us via email - [email protected]. You can also follow us on https://www.facebook.com/TailwaggersPetGroomingSalon/.

HOW SEASONS CAN AFFECT YOUR DOG'S APPETITE
There’s a lot of fluctuation in the eating habits of pets throughout the year. You might notice some changes in your pets right now in monsoon and might be worried about it. You might notice you are suffering mainly from upper respiratory tract infection which may be associated with an allergy which is due to high moisture content, wetness, lack of exposure towards sunlight etc. Make sure that your pet should be kept in dry and warm place instead of putting your AC on. Another change would be in the diet-the diet of your pet.
During monsoon should mainly comprise fibre-rich food like banana, as it helps pets who suffer from indigestion. You should avoid dairy products because some pets may be allergic. In addition, makes sure that the pet food is freshly prepared and free from microbes like fungi. It is highly recommended to add multivitamins or vitamin supplements during the rainy season. You should also maintain good hygiene and keep the feeding area clean. To add further, during the summer, two major changes occur which cause pets to eat less. The first is rising daily temperatures. Second, longer stretches of daylight cause a hormonal response in pets. This combination means that animals are going to spend less of their time looking for an outing or eating food. Once the shift towards winter begins, animals experience the opposite kind of response. Since the approaching lower temperatures mean that more energy will be needed to maintain body temperatures, food becomes a bigger priority. Similarly, a common issue with pets during the winter seasons is a loss of appetite. The changes that occur with the shorter days and colder temperatures can trigger noticeable changes in hormones for all the pets. As a result, your dog or cat may be more hungry during the winter. There’s no difference between the changing food intake levels for indoor-outdoor pets and indoor-exclusive pets, it’s safe to assume that even indoor pets are exposed to the changes in daylight hours that can trigger hormonal and metabolic responses and changes. Even with more stable indoor temperatures, their activity levels can differ hence, their food intake differs in all the season. On the other hand, understanding how seasonal changes affect your pet’s appetite can help you to take better care of your pet, which can improve their overall health and comfort. Feeding animals are much more complicated than we want to think. That is why half of all pets are overweight or obese. Keeping our pets fit requires the same diligence to researching lifestyle choices that we require for ourselves and our own health. We hope this blog is helpful to understand the reasons behind the changes in your pet’s appetite.

5 GROOMERS IN MUMBAI
A good brushing and teeth cleaning can do your pet a world of good!
Grooming provides you with a chance to go over your pet’s coat with a fine-tooth comb or brush to help you keep track of subtle changes in your pet’s skin. What’s more, regular nail clippings and teeth cleanings can prevent a number of unpleasant health problems.
Teach your dog to associate bathing with great rewards or the things they love. Take things slow and easy so that they feel relaxed and comfortable. If your pet joined the family at an older age, the same steps apply: approach bathing in a gradual, calm and patient manner, and give your dog lots of praise and rewards along the way, making each and every bathing experience a positive one.
Observe your pet’s reactions to brushing and if your pet seems uncomfortable you should check the type of brush you’re using to make sure it is soft enough and not causing any physical discomfort. Also, reduce the pressure being applied (try lighter brushing). Be aware that brushing might also tickle in some spots which could cause your dog to move, so you should try different brushing techniques until your dog is comfortable. You can use double sided brush from My Pet Shop or shop different types of brush combo as well..
If your pet has any mats or tangles it may be a good idea to give them a nice brush and trim off mats/knots before bath time. You can use shampoo to clean it properly. Get pet shampoo from My Pet Shop to nourish them fully. Not just this they also need hair trimming, cleaning nails, dental cleaning, eye check-ups, etc.
Simply put, grooming helps keep your pet happy and healthy. Also, grooming will help with the general sanitation of your house. Train pets to ensure the grooming process is an important part of their learning and will be beneficial to them as they reach maturity, hence use a professional pet groomer because there are still a number of regular grooming techniques that you cannot do at home.
So don’t delay, start grooming your pet at earliest. Here’s the list of pet groomers in Mumbai who can help you out.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR CATS
Keep in mind that a cat’s diet should never consist of pure veggies. Cats by nature are carnivores, and their systems are developed to include meats and fish. If you're looking to slim down your cat's waist, or are just looking for healthy alternatives to commercial cat treats, we've got a great list for you! Many of the fruits and vegetables we eat can also be given to our cats, however, some can be dangerous and should be avoided entirely. Find out c fruits and vegetables are safe to feed your cat.    1. Cooked Carrots Carrots are an excellent source of a lot of different vitamins and minerals, including healthy beta-carotene. Just be sure to cook the carrots before feeding them to your cat, and chop them up into small, easy-to-digest pieces to avoid choking.   2. Apples Apples are high in fibre and low in fat, making them an ideal snack for overweight or senior pets who may have a lower metabolism. They're also packed with vitamins A and C which are essential for maintaining healthy bones and tissue. Feed your pet apples in moderation and remove the core and seeds first.   3. Green Beans Green beans are another one of the few approved veggies that are okay to feed to your cat – especially if your cat happens to be overweight. A great source of fibre, this food makes a good substitute for more traditional kitty treats.   4. Bananas Bananas are a great source of potassium which can support heart and kidney functions. Bananas are high in carbohydrates and the high sugar content in bananas mean that they should be given sparingly. When sliced into reasonable sizes this can make a good occasional treat.   5. Blueberries Similar to their benefits in humans, blueberries can help prevent cell and tissue damage because of their antioxidant properties. In addition to being a good source of fibre and Vitamin C, blueberries may lessen the chances of your cat developing urinary tract infections and have been shown to improve night vision.    6. Broccoli Steamed broccoli is an easy way to distract your cat from chewing on any of the other tempting leafy plants you may have around the house. The antioxidants found in broccoli can also be an added benefit to your cat’s diet.   7.Orange The nutrients and Vitamin C can help cat’s immune system and flush toxins out of the body. However, the seeds, peel, leaves, or stem of the orange contain oils that are poisonous, so make sure you only feed your cat the fleshy part of the fruit. Also, make sure, there are certain fruits & vegetables which cats should not be fed to them. To avoid food like grapes, onions, garlic, raisins, nuts, tomatoes, avocados & mushrooms. Avoid giving them food which they are allergic to & make sure you don’t feed them too much. Fruits & vegetables in a specific proportion are suitable and healthy. If you have a specific question regarding your cat’s dietary needs, be sure to check with your vet before adding something new.
