The dangers of not washing your pets food bowls!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Something that soooo many pet owners forget about is their BOWLS! Imagine pouring your favorite cereal into one bowl, with milk, and the same spoon, 2-3 times a day, for weeks to months at a time – WITHOUT WASHING IT.  For humans, the thought of doing such a thing is absolutely revolting; and you should feel that way for your pets too.  It is recommended to wash out your dog and cat bowls after EVERY MEAL, but most of us lead busy lives and don’t have the time to do such a chore 3 times a day.  If you can, you’re a superhero, if you can only wash once a day, like myself, you’re still doing a darn good job.  Going more than a few days to a week without washing your pets bowl can lead to bacteria build up, bugs, and plenty of nasty, nasty stuff to grow and thrive in your pets food!  Pets can catch anything from a simple cold, to something far more serious, like salmonella, especially if they’re being fed a raw meat diet.  So try to make sure to give your pets the time of day when it comes to their dishes.. it’s important!!

Mylos FAVORITE treats are these rawhide chips. After a little research, I decided I'll probably buy some kind of healthier alternative to rawhide - but they don't upset his stomach, so we decided to finish off this bag first. Anyway, here's the obedience movements he's got down pat- sit, paw and lay. Trying to work on some new ones now, got any ideas? He's a brilliant dog, but I don't want to get into anything too advanced yet. The husky in him is just too excited to learn and please!

“Is your dog friendly?”
About 25 minutes into our park trip with Motley a woman with her very small child (less than 18 months old) showed up. She and her son paused about 10 yards away and she called out to us.
Mom: Is your dog friendly? Me: He is very friendly, but he is also pretty enthusiastic. Mom: Is it okay if my son comes over to meet your dog? Me: Sure, thank you for asking. Motley is friendly with kids, but he doesn’t have a lot of experience with kids his (the little boy) age, so he may be a little unsure at first. Mom: That’s okay! He (her son) is very dog friendly!
We put Motley into a down and the little boy was able to pet him with no problem, other than a few face kisses. Motley’s tongue was the size of his entire face! Hahaha. The little boy thought about grabbing Motley’s wagging tail and his mom gently guided his hand away. We exchanged thank yous and they went to the slide.
This is worth mentioning because this is the RIGHT way to approach someone’s dog. This woman didn’t charge over with a toddler to touch a strange animal without knowing anything about its temperament. She didn’t approach us at all until I gave the okay. She was calm and present and respectful through the entire interaction. I have zero doubt in my mind that if I’d said no, she would have been totally cool about it. PLEASE ask before approaching someone’s dog, especially if you have a child. You’ll save yourself from a lot of potential heartbreak if the dog is reactive, teach your kid to be respectful of dogs, and make dog owners love you. Little kids are scary to a LOT of dogs. They move erratically, they make sudden LOUD noises, they often grab/poke things rather forcefully because they’re still developing their motor skills, and they haven’t yet developed an eye to read a dog’s body language very effectively. No one wants their dog to bite a child and no one wants their child to be bitten by a dog. Parents: EVERY dog is potentially dangerous to your child. EVERY dog has a threshold that once exceeded, will cause them to bite. The owner of the dog is going to be way more aware of what that threshold is than you are. Approach them with respect and trust that their owner is looking out for your best interest if they say you can’t pet their cute puppy. Teaching your child to be respectful of dogs may save their life one day. Dog owners: Advocate for your dog! You know your dog best and it is your job to protect them from scary or dangerous situations. Sometimes people are going to try to blow you off and touch your dog anyway and you’re going to have to be forcefully assertive at the risk of them acting like you’re a giant over-protective, child-hating asshole. It totally sucks, but they’re wrong. You know your dog and they are relying on you to have their back.
This PSA brought to you by someone with a super friendly, well-socialized dog who still wants you to ask before you touch him.

What we feed our companions, and Dog Food Advisor!
So Justin and I feed both Maple and Mylo Blue Buffalo wet and dry foods.  Mylo has the food pictured below, and Maple, the one below that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Typical serving percentages of macronutrients:
31% Protein, 36% Carbs, 33% Fats.
“Above-average protein. Near-average fat. And below-average carbs when compared to a typical dry dog food.
Even when you consider the protein-boosting effect of the pea products, flaxseed and alfalfa meal, this looks like the profile of a kibble containing a notable amount of meat.
Bottom line?
Blue Buffalo Wilderness is a grain-free, plant-based dry dog food using a notable amount of chicken or fish meals as its main sources of animal protein, thus earning the brand 4.5 stars.
Highly recommended.
Please note certain recipes are sometimes given a higher or lower rating based upon our estimate of their total meat content and (when appropriate) their fat-to-protein ratios.” - DogFoodAdvisor.com
& they both seem to absolutely love it.  The real reason we bought it, though, was not for taste for price -- but for the health benefits.  I highly recommend gong to dogfoodadvisor.com and checking out how your food ranks.  BB has a 4.5-5 star rating, almost as perfect as it gets.  Reel Raw and Dr. Tims Kinesis have perfect 5 star ratings, but are a little out of our price range right now.  I HIGHLY recommend these foods and have had no issues with them. They each get their recommended dosage based on their weight in dry food, and Maple gets 1/4th small can of wet, and Mylo gets 1/4th-1/5th can wet mixed in as well, mostly because they’re both extremely active and get tons of exercise.  Both are healthy and growing well, but not losing or gaining weight too fast.  Available at Petco, Tractor Supply and other pet supply stores,  as well as online!!

Maple the Kitten
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This little lady right here is Maple!  Justin and I actually adopted Maple before Mylo, from the Franklin County Animal Shelter.  She was kind of a spur of the moment decision, but we fell immediately in love with her and welcomed her tiny heart into ours full force.  Although this blog is dedicated to mostly Mylo ad I, since kittens are far more low maintenance, Maple’s shenanigans, along with our roommate’s kitten; Zoie, will definitely make guest appearances on this blog!

I figured we’d start our blog off with a little recipe! Many people don’t think of this alternative for normal dog treats in the summer.. but Mylo LOVES pup/pawpsicles.  These are simple to make, and less expensive to make in bulk than normal treats from a store!  Sometimes we cut them up and put them inside his KONG chew toys and he is entertained for hours on end.  I’ll also cut them up and use them as training treats.
You’ll need:
1. Fage Total Zero Unsweetend Greek Yogurt
2. Natural Peanut Butter
3. Banana
4. Ice Cube Tray
5. Freezer
6. Knife or spoon to make the treats
Difficulty level: 1/5
Directions:
Simply get an ice cube tray and fill it halfway with the Fage yogurt.  Then, add one banana slice to each sicle.  Once that’s finished, top the cube off with peanut butter, and freeze!  Depending on your freezer, this can take an hour to three hours, but I let mine sit overnight.  Mylo goes nuts for them, and whenever I open the freezer, he sits politely in anticipation of receiving a pupsicle.  A great treat to take the beach or lake in your cooler, or to have for hot summer days!
xoxo, H&M
