In the past year we’ve left quite a trail of signatures on seemingly endless documents that signal growth and adulthood, and while I was certain all of this would make me feel accomplished, it is still possible to fall into a trap feeling as though you are not enough. I know this not to be true, but I still battle with this on occasion.

I spoke to my therapist about how humans are in the habit of always thinking ahead to the next chapter, the next success or thing that will bring us true happiness. Unless you choose to be present, it will never be enough, there will always be another stepping stone and battle to endure. In this postmodern world we are often living in the future or simply not living at all.

We make the proclamation that “once I have [insert job title or commodity here], I can finally be happy!”

Then it happens. You achieve the goal or come to own the thing you once coveted. What’s the next step?

This is often where a phenomenon we all know too well, sometimes called ‘keeping up with the Jones’’ will leave you feeling as though you have accomplished nothing at all.

Take the time to climb out of your own head and reassess from another point of view. Some of this may stem from lack of practicing gratitude or an excess of scrolling through social media platforms.

When I write down those things and people I am grateful for, I’ve found myself floating back down to earth and appreciating the beauty of my life. Even on those uneventful days where I simply wake up, walk the dog and go to work.

We get the keys to our new home in 48 hours.

I have been packing things into boxes every day.

I am completely overwhelmed with happiness, and just the thought of ownership of land and a beautiful dwelling is making my heart explode.

I have so many ideas and plans, I wonder what we will tackle first. 

I haven’t even had time to consider being sad or afraid.

Hi. Here I am. I’ts been awhile. I think I forgot about this.

For some odd reason I have this itch to blog again. What a wonderful feeling it is. I have been telling myself every day that I should write, and as of late I have been happily scratching away in my notebook. And yet... I have always enjoyed keeping a digital log. I have a lot of things to say.

I gave up writing professionally to enter the world of advertising almost 2 years ago. There are days when I think this might have been a misstep, however, I’m inclined to believe that I’m on the right path. I love writing, but when you do it for money, it can really suck the joy out of what was once your creative outlet. I should also mention that there are other professions that pay much better, and those options tend to be rather tempting when you are faced with a housing crisis and student loan debts.

Would you like to make more money?

Why yes, I would.

Excellent, there is just one catch. You will be yet another cog in the wheel of capitalism, pushing products and feeding the monster that rules society. Keep up with the Jones’, buy a bigger, faster vehicle and ensure you have the latest iPhone.Hope you don’t mind!

Did I sell my soul to the devil? Or am I doing what I need to in order to forge a path for myself, with the hope that I won’t die chained to a desk. Sadly, money often equals freedom. And if I can work less hours, make more bank and do the things I want to do in my spare time, count me in.
