Black Feminist books to start with written by black women :)
-Undrowned by Alexis Pauline
This is an environmentalist book about how we can learn about feminism from Marine mammals.
-Thick and other essays by Tressie McMillian Cottom
This book is personal and touches based on the author herself (Tressie) with sexual assault, the loss of her baby, body image and more!
-Bad fat black girl by Sesali Bowen
This is another book that is read through the lens of the author. In this book, Sesali talks about growing up in Chicago and learning how to sex work, poverty, self-love, and queerness. She also expresses the combination of the Hiphop culture and feminism.

The Evolution of Feminism
The 1st wave: During the 18th - early 19th century, women were mainly focused on receiving voting rights. This is what could be considered as the first-wave of feminism. During the women’s suffrage movement, activists and reformers protested for the ratification of the 19th amendment.

The 2nd Wave: During the late 1900s, the second wave of feminism hit. This however was geared towards inequality. Women fought for equal pay, abortion, more employment opportunities, and education. They wanted to stop discrimination and break the traditional norms.
Tumblr media
3rd wave of feminism: The start of third wave is during the 1990s. This is focused on women’s reproductive rights and the choice to wear and do as they pleased. This was used to branch into the raunch culture.
Tumblr media
The 4th wave: This wave broke out in 2012 and is considered to be present today. The fourth wave included the empowerment of women and intersexuality. The main focus of this wave is sexual harassment, body shaming, (unfortunately still) and reproductive rights.

“If you’re silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it” -Zora Neale Hurtson
We can all agree that Patricia Collins would vouch for this! Except you may be wondering “who is that?” Well…THE Patricia Hill Collins is a black feminist and author who argued on behalf of black feminism thought. Her specialization includes intersectionality of the feminism world. She however sheds light towards the oppression of African American women and the disadvantages of suppressing your voice and knowledge.
Rule #1 WE ARE THE MOVEMENT
It’s easy to combine feminism struggles overall…EXCEPT it’s not the same sociological practice & quite frankly feminism started with black women first. But don’t take my word on it, read about it !

What is intersectionality ?
“African American girls are 6x more likely to be suspended than White girls, that’s probably a race and a gender problem. It’s not just a race problem and it’s not just a gender problem” -Kimberlé Crenshaw

Black women and discrimination in employment:
Black women face discrimination often in employment settings. This can include unequal pay compared to their white male peers (which would be considered as a intersectionality issue) and the dismissal of commonly worn black hairstyles. Employers will commonly use the phrase of “your hair is a distraction “ or “your hair isn’t deemed as professional”. These hairstyles typically include fros, dreads, and braids.
This has became a major issue that the Crown Act was created.
Here’s an explanation of what the Crown Act is:
