Why we should accept KyoRen’s pace (even if it makes us cry)
It kills me too, really. Skip Beat!’s turtle progress in the romance department could turn off even the most ardent fangirl. I see it all over every chapter, the comments screaming, “kiss! NOW!” or “I’m getting impatient. Get tgt alr. OR ELSE.” or some similar variation. I feel your pain. KyoRen’s turtle pace makes me wanna cry. But then I calm myself down, sit back and try to see through the fangirl-induced fog. (Warning: long character analysis ahead).

What’s Love Got to Do with It?
[some spoilers] Skip Beat! all started because main character Kyoko Mogami has a deep need to love and be loved. She followed her crush Sho to Tokyo and worked her fingers to the bone to support him because she thought that was love. When he betrays her and belittles her, Kyoko’s amazing powers of getting shit done switch focus from supporting him to taking him down. But how did smart, capable Kyoko end up letting Sho walk all over her in the first place? How did she become so starved for care and affection?
Volume 38 and 39 deal with the story of Kyoko’s conception, which is in itself another story of deception and betrayal. I believe Kyoko’s mother Saena is non-neurotypical, which led to some of her issues in raising a child. But some also come from Saena’s continuing reaction to how Kyoko was conceived. Unable to have a positive relationship with her child, Saena allows Sho’s family to raise her. But Kyoko’s earliest memories are of trying to get a distant, angry mother to love her. And that yearning has stayed at the core of her being, whipped into a froth of rage demon’s by Sho’s callous treatment of her.
Hearing her mother’s tragic backstory and the sad story of her own birth gives Kyoko two gifts: it frees her from her repressed anger at her mother and it allows her to admit to herself that she still wants Saena to care for her. She has decided to stop beating herself up for wanting a mother’s love, even if her mother can’t provide it in the usual way.
Kyoko’s revelations allow her to reach an understanding with Saena, even if they will never have a more traditional mother-daughter relationship. And I think most important to Kyoko’s growth as a character, she now wants to become an acclaimed actress to make herself and her mother proud, rather than to humiliate Sho. This shift in priorities is something Lory, the president of her talent agency, has been hoping for since the day he put Kyoko in the Love Me section. And it came from opening old wounds to let them heal, much like Ren finally started to face his own violent past while in Guam. Now that Kyoko and Ren are both on a path to healing their battered hearts, do you think their slow-burn romance will heat up?!

30 day Skip Beat Challenge - Day 1: Favorite Female character
Kyoko Mogami to me has always been magnificent. No matter what hardships she endures, she always finds her way back on top somehow and not just thrives, but grows because of it.
I’m using a really old 30 day challenge that I can’t seem to remember where it came from (whoops) but I have a picture of the challenges. Usually this is something people do at the beginning of each month, but I’m using to get myself going! It’s really old though (like it mentions the ps2 game old) so I believe I’m going to ignore two challenges (they’re just not relevant anymore) Here’s the picture if you want to follow along!

Skip Beat 30 day challenge: Day 2 - Favorite manga arc (200-203)
“Don’t turn your eyes away”
These few chapters are the turning point of this entire story. Kyoko goes from hating love, denying love, and ultimately trying to expel it from her life similarly to emptying water from a boat with holes in it, to accepting her love for Ren and letting it grow. This is huge this whole confrontation allows her to meet her mom again and will hopefully allow her to get together with Ren sometime soon. Anyways, these are my favorite chapters and they make me so excited for the future.

Skip Beat 30 day challenge - Day 4: Female character you hate or find annoying
Kimiko is a special human being in that I can’t see her changing or growing. The amount of ease she has putting others down for her own gain, so she doesn’t have to struggle to improve or try her best in anything astonishes me. Her whole existence makes me want to scream. The worst part is, I don’t think she has actually given up on Momiji, and has something sinister planned for Kyoko. I have no respect for anyone who cheats their way into success. She has talent (very rough and would actually flourish if she bothered to put the effort into changing) which is sad, because most of the time she uses that skill to trick others. She honestly could be great using her own power, the problem is, she would first have to identify her downfalls and realize that she needs to improve. However, as the story is progressing, I don’t see that happening since she has no one to challenge her and no true ambition.

Skip Beat 30 Day Challenge - Day Three: Male Character you hate or find annoying
Ah yes. Producer Kuresaki. He isn’t my most hated character (that spot is reserved for the sexual predator Reino - I’m not wasting my time on him, he’s despicable) and honestly I only mildly dislike him. I do, however, have fundamental issues with his success. It’s a grander problem where dogmatism is respected and has been synonymous with integrity within multiple industries, including in both Skip Beat! and now (yeah I know it’s not that deep but still it annoys me). Situations are not black and white, and I believe that only focusing on set surface facts tends to blind us from a deeper meaning. Unique situations, views, and people all who challenge our own truths of the world create a better, more well-thought-out product. Kuresaki isn’t there yet, but I think Kyoko is certainly the unavoidable fire that will burn down his constraining practices.
#Kuresaki is basically a twelve year old who thinks theyve unlocked the secrets of the universe#im excited to see him grow#because man that is a limiting way of thinking#wow reid this is a lot of words for a crappy edit maybe you should chill out#also this doesnt include neo nazi because yeah theyre really bad#but within reason we shouldnt be so dogmatic to the point that we cant have rational discussion or thought about an opposing side#also reino is literally a piece of shit dont come at me i have receipts#emo kuresaki

I can’t think of a better way to kick off this account than with a throwback of our boy who could use a break.
It’s grainy but it’s a dinosour from the earliest chapters so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
