I don’t know how else to explain this, but Stede in flashbacks is so small. Inside of his own body he is so small. He comes off as awkward and clumsy but it’s just because his body is so big around him, and he hunches and tries to make his body smaller to fit, but he’s like a five year old in a suit of armor. He just so small.

And then he goes to sea and he becomes full of himself. Not in the sense of being arrogant or self-important, but in the sense of being filled with all the stuff that makes him him. He’s so full he’s bursting, it’s spilling out every seam of him like sunshine.

When he goes back to his house the sunshine goes out, but he still stays full-sized. He’s bigger now and his old life tries to force him back into being small, tries to squish him like a down comforter, but he doesn’t want to go back to being small. And it’s too late for that anyway, the vacuum seal has been broken and the air’s gotten in and filled him out, it’s just not possible to make him small like he was before.

So he leaves, still full right to the very top, never too small, and not too big, too much, spilling over. And the sunshine comes back, the soft and warm glow of the golden hour.

Something like that.
