Dissertation Daly City is my nation : race, imperialism and the claiming of Pinay/Pinoy identities in Filipino American culture Pisares, Elizabeth H
The organizing trope invoked overwhelmingly to describe Filipino and Filipino American subjectivities is the ocean. It is an appropriate metaphor for those from an archipelago that the confluence of water currents and wind patterns made accessible to Spanish conouistadores and Catholic padres. and that the mid-19th century refinement of the steam engine ship made accessible to U.S. military personnel, colonial administrators, and school teachers, Japanese invaders, then varieties of U.S., Japanese, and Western European capital. In turn, these same ships would transport Filipinos from their homelands to the U.S. as colonial administrators in training, as low-wage and unprotected labor in agriculture, fisheries, and the military, and as professional, then unskilled immigrants into a global postindustrial economy. Geography, imperialism, and race having shaped their social consciousness, Filipinos, be they in the Philippines or the world over, have taken the omnipresence of the ocean and appropriated it into metaphor.聽
