Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification helps Indian consumers in various ways: providing safe reliable quality goods, protecting consumers by minimizing health hazards to them, promoting exports and imports, controlling the proliferation of varieties etc. through standardization, certification and testing.

BIS certification is now required for more and more materials and products, and the trend is that more products require it every year. More products have been added to the list in the past two years than in the previous seven years.   Getting the certification is relatively standard — but like many processes, it is only simple when you know how. Product Certification Scheme

The product certification scheme under BIS requires the manufacturers to obtain registration before the sale of products in the #indianmarket.

Keeping into consideration public health and safety, the government has identified certain products that require mandatory certification.

The government keeps publishing the #quality Control Order from time to time by notifying new products which need mandatory product registrations with BIS.

BIS grants a license after following the due process from the filing of the application, an inspection of the factory by the BIS officer, and testing of the product in the approved lab to grant of license.

Although the execution of compulsory certification is maintained by competent authorities as notified in the Quality Control Orders provided by the Government from time to time.

Under the product certification scheme, BIS grants a license to use the standard quality mark for products.

However, the mark can only be granted post confirmation that the product adheres to the standards prescribed by BIS for such a product.

Non-Resident’s Royalty and fee for technical services (FTS) Taxation in India

Recently, there has been a noteworthy change in the direct tax laws regarding Royalty and Fees for Technical Services income accruing in India for non-residents (NRs), which are now taxed at a higher rate of 20% instead of 10%. This amendment has taken effect from April 1, 2023, and will apply to the year 2023-24 and onwards. While lower tax rates are still available under tax treaties, it is essential to furnish the required documentation to continue receiving this benefit. This change also impacts the filing of #incometax returns for NRIs, who previously were not required to file returns if their income came solely from royalty and Fees for Technical Services.
