Completely agree. This current team is just kinda... there. They don’t talk and banter with the Doctor and have a meaningful deep, tangible and emotional relationship. Their personalities are superficial and vague, and the Doctor calls them fam but they don’t feel like one. I just don’t understand why this is such an issue and it’s becoming extremely frustrating because they’re all potentially great characters, they’re just not developed! And it’s so unfair to the cast! And I’m saying this as a fan, who loves and supports this cast and crew and show and watches no matter what and hates all that toxic negativity going around right now. I love the potential that’s there and love the cast, and just hope it gets better.
To be clear, Doctor Who isn’t bad now. Every episode on its own is good and some are brilliant because the stories are great BUT
I’m 110% done with getting to know guest characters so well each episode when after a series and a half we know barely anything about the main characters who should be the frame around which the story is built. The companions shouldn’t only be there to ask questions, do a few tasks and tell people to trust the Doctor, and I’m sorry but that is all they seem to do except for very special moments when family is involved. I love what I know about these characters but I don’t really know them. A lot of the things I like about the companions are built on headcanons. My favourite thing about Doctor Who is the relationship between the Doctor and their companion(s) but right now there isn’t one besides the Doctor calling them ‘friend’. And as each episode passes with only crumbs of character development I feel like I’m going to explode because I can’t ever say it was a bad episode, but it’s missing what I believe to the most important element.

you know, I really loved seeing that little bit of conflict between Yaz and 13 at the beginning of the episode. Yaz was only having a bit of a joke, it was lighthearted in manner and there wasn't any bad intention behind her comment about the Doctor being in a mood, but 13 did not take it as a joke. there was no joy in her voice, she sounded mad and is clearly in a mood. and that's got me wondering, how long has she been like this?
at first, she had been barely speaking for like five days, which is incredibly unlike her. obviously, her companions notice and bring it up, but she doesn't tell them why she hasn't been speaking. then, cut to them going on more adventures. she's probably been talking a lot more, but not in a nice way. I bet she's been snarky and mean for no reason. she's possibly had too little patience for her companions and maybe even just standing there with an angry look on her face and I bet it's been going on for a while now. I mean, we've got Yaz with "maybe it'll get you out of your mardy mood" and 13 immediately snapping back, claiming she's not in a mood when she clearly is in one. she knows that her companions are noticing her mood and is immediately getting hyper defensive.
I can just imagine conversations before they go on an adventure. like 13's probably saying stuff like "you're half an hour late. are yous actually wanting to go?" "right. we ready to go? or do we need to wait another 15 minutes?!"
"doctor? are you okay?" "I'M FINE YAZ! can we just keep going? please!?"
we can see throughout Orphan 55 that she has clearly been an absolute pain for the past couple of adventures. the way they all immediately abandon her, yaz's comment about her mood, Ryan's "that's you told" and even them walking off from her while her oxygen levels are nearly depleted.
and what else I liked throughout Orphan 55 is that we saw a totally different side to 13. she's a lot more snarky and mean, she's rude and condescending to Kane and she's been so unfiltered throughout the whole episode. she's been angry, sad, silent and rude, she's been so unlike herself and it's only a matter of time before she completely snaps, either at a monster, or her friends.

The end scene of Orphan 55 is obviously important because of its message and I’ve seen a lot of people comment on the impact that seeing the destruction of their planet has on Yaz, Ryan and Graham but what I also noticed that I’m not sure has come up yet is the way that a lot of this hurt and pain is directed towards The Doctor and her actions. Ryan’s grief over how Bella has been left to die and how The Doctor is willing to just move on to whatever the next adventure will be, leave this all behind as if it has been solved. She can’t be saved; The Doctor know’s that and isn’t going to do anything about it and that exasperates Ryan. Yaz asking Thirteen at what point did she know that this planet was actually Earth, as if it was an accusation, some sort of betrayal against them. The comments about her mood, their separation from her when they get to the spa, it’s all significant but this was where I really felt the tension between the team and the culmination of what has been built since the beginning of the series.
A lot of people have been questioning the fam’s attitude towards The Doctor this episode but it all makes sense. They have been betrayed and almost killed by a man that has a significant history with The Doctor, one that she never disclosed with them. They’ve been vulnerable around her, opened up, let her in to their lives, and yet know nothing about who she really is; it’s all one-sided. They don’t know that her home planet has been destroyed again (they probably don’t even know about the Time War, how she herself destroyed it then salvaged it) and so they can’t explain her moodiness. From their perspective, The Doctor has just let them witness the dire fate of all humanity and whisked them away again as if it was something that could be, at the very least, accepted—it isn’t her planet after all so why should she care or even begin to understand their pain? The irony is intentional and The Doctor’s insistence on withholding her own grief from her companions not only is a character trait that we have seen many times before, but I think, a continuation of the Twelfth Doctor’s utter tiredness over losing those he loves. If she keeps them at arms-length, away from her past, then everything is okay.

tfw you try to maintain an “i’m sorry, you must be at least a level 10 friend to unlock my tragic backstory” distance from everyone but then part of that tragic backstory smashes its way into your life again like the kool-aid man smashes through walls
