I had a shockingly prolific month of reading! Here’s what I read in January 2025:
Jewish, Jewish History, and Antisemitism
A World Without Jews: The Nazi Imagination from Persecution to Genocide by Alon Confino
Judaism Is About Love: Recovering the Heart of Jewish Life by Shai Held
Kissing Girls on Shabbat: A Memoir by Dr. Sara Glass
My Search: A Holocaust Survivor’s Journey by Josef Ben-Eliezer (I do NOT recommend this one. It wasn’t until the end that I realized it’s from a xtian publisher and ends with him converting to xtianity and talking about jesus)
Jewish Space Lasers: The Rothschilds and 200 Years of Conspiracy Theories by Mike Rothschild (no relation)
Antisemitism: Here and Now by Deborah E. Lipstadt
Israel/Palestine
The Conflict Over the Conflict: The Israel/Palestine Campus Debate by Kenneth S. Stern
Can We Talk about Israel?: A Guide for the Curious, Confused, and Conflicted by Daniel Sokatch
Other Non-Fiction
How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them by Jason Stanley
The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer
Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba
Eleven Books!!

Hey y'all. It's International Holocaust Awareness day Both of these books changed me. Consider reading them or please share for someone else who might. It's never a bad thing to learn more.
Inside the Gas Chambers: Eight Months in the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz by Slomo Venezia This is one of the only books I've found that touches on the living conditions and viewpoint of a Jew from Greece. Reading it, the author felt like a friend. It was horrifying.
Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide this book explained people were taught to completely separate Jews from being human in people's minds in the years leading up to the Holocaust- especially in the medical field. It has interviews with some of the doctors who did these things. The site for the books also has an archive of images, films, objects, publications, recorded sounds and documents. You can find information on many communities. Thank you

I love talking to rabbis as a recent conversion student because the interaction goes something like, "you're converting? Now?! At this time, at this moment in history?!". And they always talk about this influx of jewish convert students they've seen recently, and it's like...
There's this level of respect I get from rabbis for converting at this point in time, but... Has there ever been a good time to be a jew in the last thousand years or so plus? I'm imagining that rabbis and jews in general back in 1492, back in 1290, back in 1349 would have said the exact same thing. So, really, there is only a time to be a jew. Maybe it's not a "good" time, yes, but it is a time. And to me, that's good enough

What do you think about young, pre-Aerys Jaime, personality-wise? I used to think that he was alright, not exactly angel, but intrinsically good. But recently I've been seeing more insistence to paint him as inherently moraly dubious and like... I personaly see it as 'Well look how he turned out in current timeline that means he probably always was fucked up!' and idk i find it kinda dismissive of his experience in KL and how it affected him. What were in your opinion young!Jaime's major flaws?
pre-Aerys Jaime has done basically nothing wrong lol. he has just been a child, and based on all we know, a pretty nice kid all things considered. I think the only thing you could possibly hold against young Jaime is that business w his sister, but honestly why would you - it's certainly severely misguided behaviour, but it doesn't come from a place of malice.
in fact until his post-Kingslayer days we have no evidence of Jaime ever being unpleasant at all. we know he dotes on his younger brother (despite his father and sister's example), that he looks out for his sister, that he likes dogs and horses, that he has childhood friends he still gets along with in adulthood, that he loves his aunt and has a favourite uncle. we know he stood up to a bully (Merrett Frey) as a squire, yet is disparaging of the cruel revenge other squires tried to take on Frey later. and we know that his hero was this supposedly super-honourable knight who could do no wrong.
like I don't think GRRM is trying to tell us anywhere that Jaime was a perfect kid, just that he was essentially very normal, and even quite pleasant; he was not pushing other kids down wells or tormenting babies, or indeed anything close to that. I think it's essentially just the fact that he grew up with Cersei (who was obviously a very different sort of kid) that has people insisting something must've been off about Jaime. but nowhere does the text tell us this. his journey to who he is in AGOT does not resemble Cersei's.
and I mean honestly, excluding his relationship with Cersei, what has Jaime even done wrong, not just pre-Aerys but pre-AGOT? I would say the relationship is the only thing, really. it's playing with fire, putting not just their lives at risk but their children's, with plenty potential for spanning even more widely than that. but you can imagine the headspace Jaime has been in for all these years that has him ignoring these circumstances. sure doesn't make it right, but sympathetic perhaps.
now, what else has he done pre-AGOT? the business with Tyrion and Tysha I think, but given the Tywin's coercion and Jaime's lifelong guilt over this, I wouldn't say this is GRRM trying to show us that Jaime's a bad guy, just a flawed and fallible one.
so I think we basically watch Jaime become a villain onscreen in AGOT when he pushes Bran, and we think he must always have been like that because he is pretty damn dark for the rest of that book. but in reality, he scarcely has a villain arc preceding this: he's just been a mess.
anyway in answer to your last question... I don't think teenage Jaime has any unusual flaws, he's just like... a young dude
