I hate when an artist gets exposed for being a bad person and people start the narrative “why would you even want to listen to their shitty music” when are we going to be freed from the idea that only good people create good art and bad people create bad art. It just makes it harder for these types of people to be exposed because now you got people thinking “how is this possible, his music is so good!”

Holy fuck. @xieyaohuan and I are yappers. This is very much unplanned freestyle stream of consciousness conversation about Homelander and Homelander-adjacent things. No promises on the quality, but I thought the conversational flow was pretty good. Topics are timestamped (do not look at the total time, please).
And apologies for the laptop microphone (sounds like at least one of us is speaking out of a jar and no in silico dialogue enhancement could rescue it). I only have one good microphone and that would not work for a 2 way conversation -_-

Dumbledore: Hardly anyone alive today knows that Voldemort was once Tom Riddle. He keeps his origins secret because he's so evilly mysterious. The few people who remember are too afraid to say. He would never admit to what he sees as his shameful Muggle origins. I've pieced it together because I'm so clever.
Voldemort every 5 minutes to his Death Eaters: Have I mentioned my Muggle father and how I hate him and how angry I am that he gave me his name? There’s his name written on his tombstone over there. I hate him so much.

I find it incredibly creepy how Dumbledore views Riddle as being this sort of inherently seductive 'femme fatale' type. In book 6 he implies that Tom used his looks to endear himself to his teachers when he started school and hide his supposedly inherently evil and corrupt nature.
Like. Albus. DUDE. Tom was ELEVEN. Why would you assume that teachers would be swayed by or even paying attention to the attractiveness of an eleven year old?! WTAF?
Tumblr media
And then he portrays the Hepzibah Smith memory as another example of Tom using his seductive charms for evil. But although he does bring her flowers he doesn't do anything else to encourage her and in fact seems uncomfortable and determined to keep the conversation focused on work.
She is actually the one who is being creepy here given the power differential between them. I mean, yes, Tom is putting up with her because it suits his designs for the moment and could and would kill her in a second if provoked. But even though we know that she certainly doesn't. As far as she knows she's creeping on this young store clerk without wealth or connections whose job depends on keeping her happy.
And certainly while she enjoys his looks and his attention she also seems quite happy with the persona he puts on where he addresses her in a highly respectful manner, not as an equal. She's certainly not complaining about how he calls her Miss Hepzibah or asking him to drop the honorific. She likes that. She likes that he addresses her not much differently than how her House Elf does. She likes his whole "I am only a poor assistant, madam, who must do as he is told" thing. And as far as she knows he is just that, with no particular special power or talent other than his good looks which she evidently appreciates. This is not him leading on and taking advantage of an innocent sweet old lady.
Tumblr media
And yes he brings her flowers, presumably to keep her happy, but other than that he tries to keep the conversation professional and steer the discussion towards the purpose of his visit. He doesn't say anything overtly flirtatious or even try to prolong their discussion by asking to see some of her other things.
She brings that up on her own. Nor is there any indication that he is the one that decided to move their relationship in this direction. It seems more like she saw a young and good looking man, apparently far below her in terms of station and magical power, and made her move. He probably isn't the first.
Tumblr media
The way she casually touches him is just so creepy to me. And though he tolerates it, he did nothing to encourage or solicit it. Riddle is someone who is in general quite averse to touch. We only see him voluntarily touch one person in 7 books and that's when he touches Harry, just for a second in book 4, just to show that he can. I don't think he enjoys this kind of attention. He was probably glad to kill her for more than just the purpose of getting the cup and the locket.
And yet none of her creepiness is acknowledged. Instead, Dumbledore draws our attention to how Riddle cruelly seduced and murdered a nice old lady whose affections he sought and then betrayed:

For the Anon that felt it incumbent upon themselves to tell me that antisemitism isn’t a major issue anymore and the bigger problems are the actions of the Israeli government and Islamaphobia -
First, these things can all be problems at the same time. The rise of Islamaphobia in the western world and antisemitism in the western world can exist in the same space-time. Prejudices aren’t like spell slots. Islamaphobia is a problem in the west. And Islamaphobia is unacceptable. Antisemitism is a problem in the west. It is also unacceptable.
Second, Israel has nothing to do with this. I’m not going to get into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on this post, because it is a complicated and nuanced discussion that is too long to include here. But allow me to point out that busting into a Jewish space and yelling “but Palestine” just because the space is Jewish is antisemitic on top of being irrelevant.
Finally, allow me to share with you just some of the antisemitism you think is “not a big problem anymore” that I’ve experienced through my life
- Pre-K. My secular pre-school hosts a “holiday concert.” I am the featured soloist for the Dreidle song.
- Kindergarten. Kid on the playground (right after Easter, so thanks Passion plays) shouts at me that I’m going to hell for killing Jesus. Other kids join in.
- Fourth grade. For the first time I see classmates doodling swastikas.
- Fifth grade. While in a friend’s yard a passing grown-ass adult screams at me that I’m going to hell.
- Middle school. A classmate’s bar mitzvah I am at is violently attacked, and manages to avoid being national news due solely to some very brave caterers and the assailant’s mental illness (which is why he attacked first with a golf club, rather than the dozen firearms he’d brought in his car for the occasion).
- Middle school. I am punished for correcting a teacher that was misrepresenting Jewish beliefs. Later that year he asks to borrow my family’s seder plate for a “seder” at his Church.
- High school. A swastika is burned into my school’s parking lot.
- High school. My father’s (a teacher there) car is vandalized after Easter. They find more swastikas carved into things around the school.
- College. My first day on campus a staff member at the dining hall sees my Magen David necklace. He tells me it’s beautiful, but I should take it off. It’s not safe for me to wear it on campus.
- College. A “peace in the Middle East” rally hosted by Hillel ends after students spit in Jewish kids’ faces and jack Jewish kids up against the nearest wall. The school tells UPD not to step in. The only faculty to intervene are from the Department of Jewish Studies. Nearby fliers with pictures of canned food that say “Palestinian children, murdered and consumed under Jewish rite” are untouched.
- College. A grad student from our Ethnic Studies department asks, earnestly, how I hide my horns.
- Law school. I am told to feature all of my club memberships (Street Law, Hispanic Law Student Association, etc) on my resume except for the Jewish Law Student Association and warned not to wear Jewish items to job interviews.
- Adulthood. While I am walking to work, BHIs scream slurs at me as I pass. This happens more than once.
- Adulthood. I am obligated to hold hands and participate in an opening prayer to Jesus before every office event. It is known that I am Jewish. I worked in a federal building. Still have to participate.
I grew up and lived (with rare exception) in progressive and safe places. I did not grow up in the Bible Belt. I was much safer than many of my peers.
And all that doesn’t even get into the big picture issues: antisemitism is on the rise in the west, currently more than 50% of religion-based hate crimes are committed against Jews, Holocaust denial runs rampant at the same time Holocaust education declines.
Antisemitism was a problem before. It is still a problem. And I’m not going to let people claim it isn’t. If you haven’t seen antisemitism, then I’d suggest you try opening your eyes.

its rly infuriating to see so many posts attempting to "celebrate" or "honor" sephardic n mizrahi jewish communities that time and time again "coincidentally" leave out any and all mentions of violent persecution lmfao bc it was by non white/european/xtians n it doesnt fit their solidarity/coexistence/infantilization of racialized peoples/etc. agenda. u post abt the beautiful, 3000 year old jewish community of libya but refuse to mention that there r currently zero jews living there n why all of them fled and cant return? u post post abt the history of yemenite jews yet fail to address that out of a population of half a million jews of yemenite descent, only FIVE ppl live in yemen and why that is? this shit rly isnt cute and atp i refuse to see any reason to continue doing it
