OK, so their full name is pompous ("Artificial Animals Riding on Neverland") and they aren't exactly original, but AaRON still do a lot to uphold the honor of La Belle France in the face of Anglo-Saxon indie rock. Birds in the Storm plays by the rules, down to the English lyrics, but what really matters is that it is a clever, moody, and enjoyable piece of work. The duo of Simon Buret and Olivier Coursier runs the gamut of associations here, from the upbeat Brit-pop of "Seeds of Gold" to "A Thousand Wars," which sounds like a more dejected version of "Street Spirit," especially thanks to the Thom Yorke imitation in the vocals....[allmusic]

Henry Mancini - The Ultimate Pink Panther (2004) Score The Ultimate Pink Panther gathers the themes and other pieces of Henry Mancini's scores from the six Pink Panther movies. Beginning with the instantly recognizable "The Pink Panther Theme" and verging from almost unbearable romantic ("Royal Blue") and lusciously smooth ("Champagne and Quail") to silly ("It Had Better Be Tonight," "Shades of Sennett"), the tracks from 1964's film The Pink Panther are the most enjoyable. The theme to A Shot in the Dark (also from 1964), a wonderful and inventive slice of spy music, is also quite fun. The tracks from the Pink Panther films of the '70s don't hold up quite as well. Perhaps it is the overly smooth sound of the orchestra which sounds closer to an elevator than a cocktail lounge. Perhaps it is the lack of memorable melodies. Perhaps it is the presence of an uncomfortable oily vocal by Tom Jones on "Come to Me." Perhaps it is all of the above plus the '70s added together. Whatever it is, the dropoff in listenability is precipitous. The only track that really measures up to the '60s work is "Main Title from The Pink Panther Strikes Again," which dresses up the original with some witty musical quotes and plays it for laughs. The Bobby McFerrin version of "The Pink Panther Theme" from 1993's Son of the Pink Panther is also interesting, once. If you are looking for a disc that gathers up the best of the Pink Panther scores, this is the place. If you want the absolute best of Mancini's Pink Panther work, track down the score for the first film. [allmusic]

Eight years is a long time to remain silent if you have something to say. When Damien Rice’s last album came out, Aaron Paul had just starred in Mission Impossible 3, George W. Bush was the President of the United States of America, and Microsoft had recently released the Zune. Since then, Rice completed an American tour, had a rather distressing breakup with his musical collaborator and ex-girlfriend Lisa Hannigan, occasionally played gigs in his homeland of Ireland, and stayed out of the view of almost everyone else. That silence ends now.

Rice was the head of his class in a new wave of singer-songwriters that were poised to take over years before Justin Vernon became the bearded man every Brooklynite copped a flannel after. Artists like Joshua Radin and Jose Gonzalez were compared to him as their selling point, while Rice himself was unfairly criticized as a Jeff Buckley knock-off. Not everyone was going to miss Rice. Those who missed the point in the first place may not be won over this round; Rice still sings in an Irish accent about various heartbreaks over haunting melodies, and his sincerity (or perceived lack thereof) hasn’t changed either...[consequenceofsound]
