Espresso
At the beginning of October, I got to sit down and talk with Espresso at In N Out, and really got a feel for who they are, and for their music. They’re honestly a super cool group of guys, and I had the best time getting to know them. And their music is so good. The general vibe is funky but also has a bit of a surf rock vibe to it. A few weeks after the interview, I got to see them play on the set of their upcoming music video to their song Twealer. It was so fun getting to be a part of it, getting to dance around, and just as fun seeing them play in such a chill setting.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/43e05a551d6d4d93c912aa29b69297e1/tumblr_inline_ogxk0wPep21u8m3aj_540.jpg)
Background: Espresso is made up of Colin on drums, Dash on guitar and vocals, and Alex on bass. They described themselves musically as playing “psychedelic skate funk”, saying “we have skater vibes but play funky ass music”. After meeting through school and friends, they started up their band called Espresso, which got it’s name when they were jamming and saw an espresso cup sitting on Dash’s night stand. They figured, if they didn’t pick a name now, they never would. Originally, Alex and Dash were in a band called Los Dos, but decided to combine it with Espresso. Since then, they’ve gotten signed by Penniback Records, and have played “everything”, which includes “legit venues”, like the Smell, The Lyric Hyperion, etc, to backyard parties and warehouse shows. They’ve also had some crazy show experiences, like when Alex almost got beat up by some random guy in the bathroom before they played at Los Globos, or the time they broke the stage at one of their concerts (which Dash said was “pretty rock and roll”), and got banned from a bowling alley.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/96b1eb34e1f998d784feab420d7a3d0a/tumblr_inline_ogxk0xekeY1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
On a musical note though, when creating their music, they start off with the melodic aspects of it; they jam on a baseline or drum part, and then the others join in, adding their own “flavor” to it, saving the lyrics for last. As a band, they say they get their musical influence from bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers,The Doors, and Sublime.
Colin: Colin got his start in music because of his dad, who’s had a huge musical influence on him, and shown him a lot of the music he loves today. Alex and Dash described him in a couple of words as “loving” “hard-working” “dedicated” and “tough-skinned”. And “Irish”. His favorite part about playing gigs is being with his friends and “having people really f*ck with your music”, “having people really get into it for however long you’re playing”, and that good feeling you get after you play. If he could play with any artist, dead or alive, it would be Fear. Something most people don’t know about him is that he has four sisters, and his “hidden talent” is not going to class. If he had to choose one TV show to watch for the rest of his life, it would be Workaholics, cause “that sh*t is funny”. Colin’s favorite thing about music is how much of it there is, and how ”you can be in any mood, and then there’s gonna be something for you to listen to, or there’s like, so much music out there that you can be looking for new stuff all the time, and always find something.” Aside from music though, he likes going to the gym.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/39054bd464d1b9dd0243809fee5cf1f2/tumblr_inline_ogxk0xO7gt1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
Colin at The Smell
Dash: Described by the others as “unexplainable” and “sensitive”, Dash got into music when his uncle gave him his old guitar, “an old acoustic guitar that he was gonna sell at a yardsale” and taught him a couple cords on it. He started taking lessons after that, and has been playing ever since. His most deepset music inspiration is from his childhood: the band They Might Be Giants. His favorite thing about playing gigs is seeing everyone dancing and moshing in the crowd, saying “it’s cool that people can vibe on what we create”. His favorite thing about music is how there “is no limit to what we can make”, how “as you can see as time goes on, new genres keep getting created, and music keeps progressing” and that “there are rules, but you can break the rules, and you can do anything you want. It’s like it’s free”. His favorite bands are The Doors and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Something I think is so sick are his many hidden talents: he can ride a unicycle, solve a rubix cube, and is “f*cked up good at diving” (i.e. “flips and sh*t”) according to Alex. If he only had one day left to live, he would surf a train, or drive his car really fast. His favorite candy is banana flavored laffy taffy’s and the gummy penguins from Trader Joe’s, which are “bomb”. Aside from music, he likes “building stuff” and skateboarding.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/47e34d94a6223296b7ec7659a116b03f/tumblr_inline_ogxk0xVqKD1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
Dash at The Smell
Alex: Alex was described by the other two as “a psycho” and “creative”, two things that are pretty often related. Alex became interested in playing bass when his cousin showed him a video of Flea and he thought it was the coolest thing he’s ever seen. When his cousins got Rock Band, they “did rock paper scissors and sh*t to see who would get the instruments, and obviously everyone wanted guitar and singing and drums, no one wanted bass", so he always got stuck with it, but “it all fit just right”. He loves playing gigs for the same reason as Dash, which is having people really get into the music; dancing, and just enjoying themselves to something that they created. His favorite thing about music is how it’s like a bed. Meaning that it’s “the safest place in the world”. He described it as “everything else besides music–…there’s always something bad to everything. But music is just– you’re in such a safe little spot. And you feel good.” His biggest bass influences are Flea, The Doors, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the Beatles (“despite however big they are, they’re f*cking the best”), and Paul Mccartney. Something most people don’t know about him is that he has a herniated disc in his back, meaning that his back is in constant pain. To which Dash said “That’s a good one”. His favorite candies are any gummies, “preferably mango flavored”, and if he had one day left to live, he would do heroin, chill with his family, and “play bass a little”. Aside from music, he’s a “really good artist, and draws all the time” according to Dash, and likes watching movies.

Almost Monday
On Saturday September 10, Billabong and Donovan Frankenreiter held a surf competition and concert in Dana Point, Still Salty, that I was super lucky to have gone to. There were at least 500 people milling in and out, and it was a really chill event. And the sweet potato fries were the best ever. The opening band, Almost Monday, are an awesome band, and really hilarious group of guys, and I’m so glad I got to talk to them after they played.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f0c48aa0f3222875863ebf02049aab55/tumblr_inline_odq7kkPSyD1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
Some background:
The band is made up of Michael Leto on drums, Luke Fabry on guitar and bass, Cole Clisby on guitar, and Dawson Daugherty on bass, guitar, and vocals. Talking about the general vibe of the band, Luke said “our vibe is pretty all over the place. It’s exciting, it’s funny, sometimes frustrating. But at the end of the day, we all love music and that’s what brings us back together”. Based out of San Diego, they practice in Dawson’s garage, and Dawson described how “we got our first complaint the other day, a letter...It was a pretty big moment in our lives--”, followed by Luke: “WE ARE A BAND”, and Michael: “We made it!”
Dawson and Luke started the band, having been childhood friends, and met Cole through a mutual friend. Dawson told me how, they “talked about about music and it seemed like the natural thing to do”. Michael joined the band only four months ago, but Dawson said that he “totally fits with us and he’s like a brother now”. Regarding their music writing process, Michael described how “We all just kind of show up with ideas, and then put them together, or we say no-- it’s just usually someone sends something over the group chat, and then it turns into a song”. In the past they’ve played at the Studio Encinitas, church events, and other random venues. They are super excited to play Kaaboo in Del Mar, a big music festival, alongside artists like Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, Jack Johnson, Fall Out Boy, and more. Their craziest show experience was when their friends opened a show for them and blew up one of the speakers. They described how there was smoke everywhere, and they had to play without speakers while everyone started a “sketchy mosh pit”.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/70b5faeb380911f29a954ceaa4d478a5/tumblr_inline_odq7pg2Zbw1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
Michael: When describing Michael in a couple of words, the other guys said “a natural talent”, “creativity”, twitter user/abuser”, “soul and feels”, “funny”, “a delight to be around” “talented” “good vibes” and “driven”. Michael first became interested in music and being in a band when his dad bought Beatles rock band when he was in eighth grade. He loved it, and wanted to start playing. His favorite thing about music is the emotion: “emotion is like a catalyst for music… like without emotion, music would just be bland. The emotion behind songs sometimes is so powerful, it just moves you”. If he could play anywhere in the world, it would be something by the beach. If he could play with any artist, it would be Justin Bieber, (a major drum influence for him) after which Cole, Luke, and Dawson made sure to express that “we are not affiliated with Justin Bieber”. If he had to see any movie for the rest of his life, it would be South Park, and if he had one day left to live, he would go to a Justin Bieber concert. Aside from music he likes soccer, and “learning things”, and is the only one in the band who doesn’t surf. And, he used to play the bagpipes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/958706b373beaf9c03f0f7fa1c03c165/tumblr_inline_odq7qnL9GD1u8m3aj_540.jpg)

Michael at Still Salty
Luke: Luke was described by the others as “wild” “fun to be around” “funny” “determined” “friend” “intentional” “caring” “cool” and “there for you”. He told us how when first started music, he wanted to play drums, but his mom made him play piano instead, so after four years, he moved to guitar. His favorite thing about music is how “there’s a song for every emotion.” If he had to play for or open for any artist, it would be Switchfoot or Two Door Cinema Club. He also used to play the handbells in sixth grade. His favorite show is The Office, and aside from music he loves surfing, sports, and more music. And “competing… TO BE THE BEST”. If he had one day left to live, he would “do something really crazy” with all of his friends, and his dream place to play would be “somewhere fat”.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f1b1cfd345906aa6e2a3c5f53e64e5e8/tumblr_inline_odq7ry3vK81u8m3aj_540.jpg)

Luke at Still Salty
Cole: The others described Cole as “focused” “diligent” “driven” “talented” “hardworking” “good guitar tone” and “fun to be around”. He started playing guitar in sixth grade, taking lessons from his very talented teacher, Andy Powers”. He told us how his “love for music has just grown over the years”, and how he loves playing in a band. He dream artist to play with would be Led Zeppelin. Aside from music, he’s loves surfing, and also likes skating and eating. “And surviving and breathing”. If he had to see any movie for the rest of his life it would be Lost. And Dawson forced him to tell us about how much he loves Pokemon go, and how he took Dawson’s ten year old brother’s DS. If he had one day left to live, he would go somewhere like “Indonesia or something, and take a jet ski and get the most barrels of my life”.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/01c3a42aeb4e7f1720325fb81d714b42/tumblr_inline_odq7tggosx1u8m3aj_540.jpg)

Cole at Still Salty
Dawson: Dawson was described by the others as “compassionate” “passionate” “forgetful” “personable” “forgetful” (again) “flamboyant” and “vovacious”. He first got into music because he thought his youth pastor was cool, so he started playing guitar. He described how his youth pastor inspired him to sing too: “Then he told me ‘hey you can kind of sing’. And I was like ‘really? Ok. I guess I’ll do that then.’ Then I just started singing from there, I learned drums after, and piano, and it’s just kind of evolved into a love for music”. He loves being in a band “because you can kind of get this cool aspect of combining different musical influences. Like, all of us are so different and have different influences so it’s pretty unique to see what it becomes”. His individual music writing process “Comes I think a lot with just experiences in life, you know. Whether that’s something like trying to figure out faith, or hard situations… I try to write lyrics that come from kind of a deep, more vulnerable place, but musically it’s cool to just be with your three buddies who are extremely good musicians”. His favorite thing about music is how it can bring a group of people together, because music “is such a draw”. He’s obsessed with U2, and would play with them, and have a gig in Slane Castle Ireland just because that’s where they play. His “hidden talent” is remembering and not losing stuff. Which was later found to be very far from the truth. His favorite show is The Office, and aside from music, he likes surfing. And his girlfriend. If he had one day left to live, he would surf a really really big wave, skydive, and talk to people about faith. Because it would be a “meaningful way to die”.

Hana Vu
On Friday, August 19th, I went to see the band Hana Vu for the second time at a great lil house party show, the first time being at Smash Club. All of the music was super rad, and Hana Vu especially had this awesome sound/vibe that I really enjoyed. I was lucky enough to get to sit and talk with Hana, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, and learn more about her and about her band.
The band, called Hana Vu, is made up of Hana Vu, Desi Scaglione (bassist), Jair Hernandez (drummer), and Aaron Reeves (lead guitarist). Aaron is the newest member of the band, and has been with them for three shows. After moving here from San Francisco at a young age, Hana always knew she wanted to get involved with music, and “create stuff”. She met Desi in middle school, and said “we weren’t really friends, but I later asked him to be in my band”. When she was a freshmen in highschool, Jair was a freshmen in college, and she saw him “hangin around” and asked him to be in the band as well, and said he is “now like my best friend in the whole world.” Hana, Desi, and Jair all met Aaron, a really “nice and great” guy, and started playing shows with him, and soon after he became their lead guitarist. In the past, the band has played house parties, and small shows. Venues and shows include The Smell, Amplify, Artribe, Smash Club, Junior High, and many others. In terms of the music writing process of the band, Hana explained how “I write the songs and the lyrics and the structure, and then I kind of just throw it at them, I’ll send it to them...Then we’ll go to practice and they’ll show me what they have and it’s usually pretty good because they’re all really talented players. But mostly I write the roots and the structures, but they add a lot.”

Desi at Smash Club
Hana’s favorite thing about music is how “there’s so many different components of music… There’s the music itself that can make you feel something… minor, major, different moods. But then I think lyrics are very important cause those also make you feel-- it’s just a combination of all of those things make you feel something which is amazing.” Her favorite past show was at The Smell with Surf Curse and Slow Hollows, which was “The biggest thing for us because when I was a kid wanting to make music, I really aspired to Surf Curse and Slow Hollows, and then getting to play with them at The Smell, which is like, a legendary venue is really cool and kind of life affirming.” The craziest show experience she’s ever had was at a show in Pomona, where they’d never played before, and didn’t know anybody. She described an awesome moment at that show, and said, “It was so great and fun, and they loved us so much, there were so many people there that we didn’t know that liked us, and during that set… at the end when we played our song with the lead guitarist, Desi, our bassist, would switch from bass to guitar. So in between him switching, there was like a three minute gap… so during that two minutes when he was switching, they were just like, “Play something!” and I was like uhhhh, and I really love Taylor Swift so I played Taylor Swift, ‘We Are Never Getting Back Together’. And this was probably our first show where people were really reciprocating our energy, so they just started moshing and crowd surfing to Taylor Swift… it was really great, that was probably the happiest moment of my whole life.” If she could choose any artist to play with or open for, it would be St. Vincent or Taylor Swift, if she could choose anywhere to play, it would be Oakland, and if she had to see one movie for the rest of her life, it would be either Scott Pilgrim or Bridge to Terabithia. Her favorite “candy” is a push pop (blue raspberry flavor) which she hasn’t had in about five years but remembers being hype. Her favorite place, in the whole world, is her room, which she said was a “stupid answer” but also “everyone’s answer, where everyone’s safe.” Aside from music, Hana is involved with visual arts, such as painting and graphic design.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f385236de25749bdaac2a1f1372434ea/tumblr_inline_ocn565jtJ11u8m3aj_540.jpg)

All in all, I had a great time talking with Hana and I think the band is really talented and amazing. They were all chill and friendly, and Hana was super open to talking with me. All of the artists at the show were awesome, and I hope to see more of them in future. To hear more of and about Hana Vu (which you definitely should), check out the links below!

Liily
The All Your Friends Fest was an event put together by The Altar Collective + Crew (a small press and arts collective based in Los Angeles) at LA mother in Hollywood, and features young musicians and artists. One of these bands was Liily, a band made up of five guys from about 16-18 from different areas in SoCal. I’d seen Liily once before, but this event was my first time seeing them with a singer, and I have to say, the full band is amazing. They honestly sound like recording artists. The general vibe of the band would have to be an overall rock music vibe, but with a hint of indie as well, that got everyone in the room dancing. After the show, I was lucky enough to get the chance to talk with them about themselves, and the band.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7ebfc73d96f01f3bfaf4f242bbc9b787/tumblr_inline_o8uclsHPwp1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
The members of Liily are Sam (guitar), Dylan (vocals), Charlie (bass and keys), Maxx (drums), and Aaron (guitar). Maxx, Aaron, Dylan, and Sam all met at School of Rock in Burbank, which teaches kids music, pairs them in bands, and puts on shows, which I did myself for a few years. They were all around seven to ten when they met, and much like a lot of people, they stopped going to School of Rock when it came under new ownership, and some of the greatest music teachers known to man stopped teaching there. Liily was formed when Maxx and Sam decided to start a band. Maxx called up Aaron, who at this point was living an hour away in Claremont, and asked if he wanted to join. When they had to find a bass player, Maxx asked Charlie, who he went to school with. After a full year playing instrumental, Dylan joined Liily, and they now have a complete band. When it comes to writing and producing songs and music, Maxx described how the process goes: “Basically we have a lot of voice memos on our phone, and then someone comes in and is like, ‘yo I have a voice memo’, and we all listen to it, and if the majority likes it, we’re like, alright we’ll play it, so then we’ll just jam on it for a little bit, and then create a song about it.” Describing how the band works together to write music, Sam said, “sometimes in bands there’s one songwriter, and he writes all the hooks of all the songs, but we’ve pretty much wrote each song all together. Like, someone will bring it, and we’ll play it, someone else will bring it and we’ll play it, someone else will bring it, and someone else will bring it, it’s never the same person that wrote all the good songs.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/144c64003d3d7f4e951c629e4ec422b9/tumblr_inline_o8ud5fUuoh1u8m3aj_540.jpg)
Dylan, Sam, Charlie at All Your Friends Fest
Sam: Sam first became interested in music when he was around seven years old, and went to a concert where he described how “I think I really understood what was happening”. The concert sparked his interest, so he actually took piano lessons for a year, before he started playing guitar around nine years old. Over the years he’s played a lot of really cool shows, but his favorite was Stay Away Fest, “a show I planned in April that was really fun. We had had a dry spell, and we kinda just kicked ass again at that show…that was before Dylan. Cause I hate Dylan. No I’m kidding. I love him.” Sam’s favorite social media platform is Instagram, and if he could play anywhere in the world it would be Red Rocks or New York with the band Foals. When asked about why he loves music, he said, “music can control me… it changes your pulse, it changes your mood, and changes everything about what you’re doing. If music’s there it’s just gonna make the mood completely different. And I like playing it a lot.” Aside from music, Sam is interested in drawing.

Sam at All Your Friends Fest
Dylan: Dylan, the newest member of Liily, joined the band in April. Dylan first became interested in music because his dad is a musician, but what really sparked his interest was School of Rock. The All Your Friends Fest was his first show with Liily, but outside of Liily his favorite show that he’s played was “the Henry Fonda, and it was really fun.” Something not a lot of people know about him is that he’s “straight edge”. His favorite desert is chocolate ice cream, and his favorite social media platforms are Instagram and Snapchat. And when asked why he loves music, Dylan said, “I get chills every time I play it or listen to it, whenever, whatever it is, if it just sounds good it will give me chills, and that’s the best feeling in the world. Honestly, the best feeling in the world.”

Dylan at All Your Friends Fest
Charlie: Charlie… Well I guess to start, I could say that his favorite thing about music is “The women. The women and the drugs”. If he had to play anywhere in the world, it would be “Spokane Washington” or “LA, baby”. With Liily, his favorite show “was: all of them.” (cue the “aww”s). He also described how “Music is my passion”, and how he got his start when “I had a bass and my friend called me up one day and was like yo you wanna be in my band? I was like thirteen, and he’s like you play bass right? And I was like yeah of course I play bass. So I just faked it for a while and then I met these guys.”

Maxx: Out of all of them, Maxx talked the most, and gave the most info about how the band came to be, and their music writing processes and all that. Personally though, he described getting his start in music first from influence from family, and then having a sparked interest upon joining School Of Rock. His favorite thing about music is “that music can, like—you don’t have to know someone to make an impact on their life, like if they like a song or if---” before he got interrupted by Charlie for “cheesin”. If he had to tour with anyone it would be “Foals foals foals foals foals foals.” And if he could play anywhere in the world, it would definitely be South Dakota.

Aaron: Aaron got his start in music when “I was in like, third grade, and there’s this music store in Claremont called The Folk Music Center that I always used to go to, and I bought this book by the guy that owns the place, Joel Harper, and I saw a picture of him playing guitar and I was like, that’d be cool. So then I learned guitar.” After that, he joined School Of Rock, where he met the other guys. If he could play in any city in the world it would be New York, “cause I’ve never been to New York and it sounds like fun.” He also likes doing impressions, he even did one of Cleveland from Family Guy, even though Sam said “you’re going make us seem stupid”. Aaron loves music because “music can mean a lot, and then it can also mean nothing… and usually it’s really really fun.” Aside from music, Aaron is interested in drawing.

The Lolas and Friendly Fire Entertainment
SmashclubLa is a Los Angeles based program putting together shows featuring local bands and artists, mainly teens. The most recent show was May 21st, at The Lyric on Hyperion Ave. It was a pretty amazing show, and the general atmosphere was great; the only people there were people who love music, and were only there for that one reason: the music. And if I’m being honest, music is one of the greatest things that exists. Probably the greatest thing. So after the show, I got the chance to speak with Alex, the guitarist of the Lolas, and he had some pretty sick things to say.

The Lolas were created by Alex, who started the band with his friend Sam. While there have been multiple people filtering in and out, Alex and Sam remain the core of the band. They met at school, and according to Sam, “we’d just sort of hang out and then he’d get pissed at me if I didn’t bring a guitar, so I started bringing a guitar, and we’d just play… basically he’d just pull out a song and I’d play like a lead over it or a scale over it for the whole time, so we kind of figured out what we wanted to do as far as a band”. Based out of North County Encinitas California, a surf town where there isn’t a huge music scene, the Lolas have gotten really good turnouts to their shows, and it’s not hard to see why. Their stuff is chill and authentic, and they have a relaxed vibe that automatically draws you into their music.

In addition to the Lolas, Alex, Sam, and their friends Ness and Robin, also created Friendly Fire Entertainment, which is, according to Sam, “essentially a group of friends trying to create an environment that we want to live in. We got tired of spending hours driving to find concerts that we could actually enjoy, live music that wasn’t dads in prog rock bands playing at local restaurants. So we decided to do something about it. We’ve been actively reaching out to local establishments that would want to host shows and have been creating a network of local bands that we can rely on to play. We’ve also been on the hunt for undeveloped land that we can use to put on nighttime generator shows. Really, our goal is to get other people to do this too. What we want is an environment of young people that are actively trying to put on good shows. We want to get important community members to open their minds to hosting bands, to have faith in music. Also, we’re making an effort to include different types of art: we want painters, animators, sculptors, and more to team up with us and add to the vibe of our events. The goal of Friendly Fire is to encourage artists to play out and exhibit their work, to encourage community leaders to support art and artists, and to introduce people to our philosophy of living through art and having a great time doing it.” Alex said people come from all along the coast of Highway 101 to go to the underground shows, “Freak Out” every Saturday in Glen Park in Cardiff, and “Sunday Funday” at Swamis Beach. Alex described how the basic goal of Friendly Fire is to have “musicians coming together to have a gathering of ideas and good times. Everyone makes time and comes from their part of the PCH to participate and it’s great.” Venues used by Friendly Fire and the Lolas include Ducky Waddles, a book, record, and trinket store “the size of a bedroom” in the heart of Leucadia where the owner, Jerry, has “let every generation of misfits and weirdos throw shows and wreak havoc since he opened his shop up fifteen years ago.” At the last show, Alex described how “one of the punk bands got the crowd moshing and there was some property damage, around $200 worth”. Alex says that Friendly Fire has “taken it upon ourselves to throw a benefit show in honor of Jerry Waddle the God himself to pay him back and keep Duckys open”. Friendly Fire also uses the Studio for their shows, which was started by one of the founders of the band Switch Foot. On Saturday June 11th, Friendly Fire is hosting a show there (at The Studio), so if you happen to be in the area I would really suggest checking it out!

Aside from Friendly Fire Entertainment and the Lolas, Alex plays multiple instruments, including bass, keyboard, guitar, bongos, tambourine, vocals, and trumpet. Basically “fucking around with everything”. Bandwise, he loves the Growlers and David Gilmore, and listens to surf rock, reggae, classic rock, and gypsy music. He says “it’s kinda weird”, but he finds major influence from Russian folk gypsy music/ Hungarian gypsy music, and from the beach, which he said “really changes your life”. He described this spot from the bluff, with a trail that goes right down to the beach, where you can sit and have a view of the coastline, overlooking the ocean. The Lolas and Alex even have songs written about that specific spot. According to Sam, Alex writes most of the music for the Lolas. Alex describes how he gets his inspiration for writing music “from some things I’ve experienced, it’s kind of hard to write about stuff that I don’t know… But that being said, I can totally be down for that, writing about something I haven’t experienced, it’s just using your imagination I guess, but I get inspiration mostly from things that have happened. I have hidden meanings and stuff, and the lyrics have metaphors in them…”
When asked what his favorite thing about music is, he said “I love looking out and seeing people dancing you know, to the music, and not fake dancing either, or feeling awkward, but feeling like they don’t have to feel awkward, just having a good time and enjoying it”. He also described how he loves how music is one of the few things that can bring a group of people together in a real way, putting aside violence and war and coming together in harmony to just enjoy themselves in a way that only music allows.

All in all, the Lolas seem like a really great band, and definitely worth checking out. And Friendly Fire Entertainment is an awesome group that seems to have a great future ahead. To see for yourself, check out the accounts below to get a feel for their vibe and to hear about upcoming shows. And “Just be ready for what’s coming because it’s gonna fuck you up more then it doesn’t fuck you up. So enjoy that.” –Alex.

Welcome
Hey friends… Before I get into what this blog is going to be, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Sophie, and I’m from Los Angeles, California. Music has always been a huge part of my life... however cheesy this may sound it’s kept me going through all the tough times, and never fails to make me happy. Ever since I was little, I knew that whatever I did in life would have to involve music in some way, whether that be creating, playing, journaling, etc.
For this blog, I’m going to be interviewing and writing about talented up and coming bands and artists around Southern California who I think deserve some love. The bands you’ll hear about by reading this blog are all amazing and definitely worth checking out. I’ll also be recommending bands and artists that are my personal favorites. So if you love authentic music and awesome artists, you’ve come to the right place! Reading this blog will be a great way to find new music, hear about some rad bands, and kill some time. Hope you like it.
