Murad Saÿen, born in Philadelphia in 1945, is an artist who lives in the hills and lakes district of western Maine. He has painted in oils since age six and is devoted to a type of contemporary realism that depends on dramatic lighting and luminosity. In his pursuit of these qualities he discovered the methods of the Flemish and Italian masters of antiquity. He paints in layers, often building over a dozen of them in order to create saturated, luminous color. Murad's subjects are traditional portrait, still-life and landscape, but filtered through his own sensibilities. All of his work is on plywood panels with the finest oil paints available.
