Rail strike: Travellers face reduced service ahead of train strikes
Treasury minister Simon Clarke warned that the industrial action was likely to go ahead despite the planned talks. He told BBC Breakfast there was "no point giving false hope" that the strikes could be avoided, adding that it is "important to be realistic" about the difficulty of the negotiations.Mr Clarke also ruled out the direct involvement of government ministers in the talks and said the railway would have to "financially sustain itself".Labour said the absence of the government from the negotiating table was "hobbling" talks.Shadow transport secretary Louise Haigh told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "Without them there, it's impossible for them to find a way forward and therefore, it is inevitable that industrial action will happen."
Network Rail says the last trains between many major cities are expected to depart over the course of the afternoon, before more than 40,000 rail workers walk out over job cuts, pay and conditions on Tuesday.Knock-on disruption is expected on the roads, with motorists being warned to expected a surge in traffic.Motoring group the AA says drivers in Scotland and Wales should expect to face long queues as most railway lines will be closed. The M74, M8 and A9 in Scotland and the M4, A55, A5, and A483 in Wales could see severe traffic, it says.
The RAC says major city routes and those serving the home counties are likely to see some of the biggest increases in traffic volumes. The strikes will affect a number of events including school exams and the first Glastonbury Festival for three years.

Olympic gold winner Kelly Holmes announces she is gay
She contacted a military LGBTQ+ leader in 2020 to find out if she could be sanctioned for breaking army rules and was told she would not be. She said: “I felt like I could breathe again, one little call could have saved 28 years of heartache.”
LGBTQ+ campaigning charity Stonewall said on Twitter: “Congratulations to Dame Kelly Holmes on coming out as gay. Kelly’s story shows that overcoming stigma to live proudly and authentically can take decades, and at huge personal cost. We need to fight prejudice at every corner so that all LGBTQ+ people are free to be.”
One of Britain’s greatest middle-distance athletes, Holmes won gold medals in the 800 and 1,500m events at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and went on to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year that year. On retirement she has became a motivational speaker, written books, and is a familiar figure on TV.
Dame Kelly set up a charity in 2008 created to support retired athletes to transition out of their sport and to create mentoring programmes to inspire young people from disadvantaged backgrounds into sports.
Now she has started to make a documentary about her experiences called Being Me, where she talks to LGBTQ+ soldiers about their lives in the military now.

Paul McCartney’s 80 Best Songs, Ranked
On the occasion of Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday weekend, anyone reading this is probably thinking the same thing: Only 80 Paul McCartney songs? The hope, of course, is that he lives to 120, in order to provide a hook for a much easier-to-narrow-down list of his 120 finest. But 80 is just enough to cover the breadth as well as greatness of the 20th century’s (and beyond’s) greatest journeyman singer-songwriter, from The Beatles to today.
This critical list of major, world-changing accomplishments and delightful trifles runs the gamut from “The Long and Winding Road” (sorry to anyone who still has PTSD from the Phil Spector arrangement) to “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” (sorry, just generally, on that one). We know what you’re thinking: Will “Wonderful Christmastime” be on the list? No — we’re not monsters, all right? But you may find a guilty pleasure or three — if that should really even be a thing — amid dozens of selections as worthy of veneration as anything to hit a classical concert hall or juke joint in the last hundred years. Here’s to Sir, with love.

Curious Questions: Did a mining disaster lead to the invention of Father’s Day?
The small town of Monongah in West Virginia has the unenviable distinction of being the site of America’s worst mining disaster. At 10.28 am on Friday, December 6, 1907, an explosion ripped through the Fairmont Coal Company’s No 6 and No 8 mines when a spark or a flame from a miner’s lamp made contact with flammable gas. The cause was never formally established.
Ventilation systems were destroyed, timber supports in the mining tunnels demolished, and despite the best efforts of townsfolk and miners from nearby mines (who led the rescue attempts) almost all those trapped underground were killed. Officially, the death toll was set at 361, although with employment practices and record keeping so lax, the number was probably higher still. Many of the victims were migrants, recently arrived in America; amongst their number 171 Italians and 94 Slavs. 250 of the dead were fathers. The youngest victim was aged just eight.
Horrifyingly, it was far from a rare event. Over 3,200 people were killed in American mines in 1907, making it the deadliest year in the industry’s history. US mining, a voracious employer of migrant labour, operated with outdated safety precautions, and used working practices regarding lighting, handling of explosives and the dangers of methane gas which had long been outlawed in British and European mines.

Happy Father's Day 2022: Find quotes, wishes and messages to share on the occasion
Every year on the third Sunday of June, Father's Day is celebrated around the world. It is a day to appreciate his efforts as he plays a crucial role in shaping our lives. This year, the day falls on 19 June.
From helping us riding a bicycle to dressing our first wound, a father's role in every child’s life is irreplaceable. He is not only a role model for his children, but also the first person to look for advice. He is someone who teaches us how to go about our 'first's' at everything and the one on whom the entire family can rely on. That's why dad’s are called superheroes without a cape.
On the occasion of Father’s Day, here are some quotes, wishes and messages to share:
- Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad, and that’s why I call you dad because you are so special to me - Wade Boggs, former professional baseball player.
- My father didn’t tell me how to live. He lived, and let me watch him do it - Clarence Budington Kelland, American writer.

Former Goldman Sachs Managing Director Nomi Prins Warns: "Move Your Money Fast"
Something odd is going on with our money.Right now, the mainstream media is completely ignoring what might be the most important story in the financial world that nobody is talking about.People who don’t understand what’s going on could suffer immensely in the months ahead. But if you understand what’s happening right now, you could come out far ahead if you make the right moves.
Today, former Goldman Sachs Managing Director Nomi Prins is coming forward with a different kind of prediction. She says: “We ARE about to see a crisis like nothing we’ve ever seen before. It won’t be like the crashes we saw in 2000... 2008... or even 2020. In fact, the next crisis won’t be a crash at all.” This could be the most important story in the financial world in 2022...It has little to do with stocks, bonds, or cryptocurrencies...A strange phenomenon is ‘distorting’ Global financial system.
If you listen to the mainstream media, you’d think a new crash is imminent. But in fact, prepare to move your money as soon as possible!
Prins considers this transformation so urgent, she has agreed to sit down for an interview to get her message in front of as many Citizens as possible. For now, there’s no cost to watch.

ELIZABETH Hurley sizzled in a black halterneck bikini with gold chain detail as she gushed over her "favourite" design.
Last year, she showed off her stunning body in a leopard print bikini after getting her coronavirus booster jab.

Life’s too short to be on a super strict diet."She added: "My weakness is peanut butter - if it’s in the house, I’ll stick my finger in the jar every time I walk past it."
But in March, she took a break from posting thirst traps to pay tribute to "Lionheart" ex-fiance Shane Warne after he died from a heart attack. The actress was in a relationship with the cricket legend, 52, for three years until they split in 2013.Liz broke her silence to pay tribute to Warne, who was with pals at a luxury villa in Thailand when he was found unresponsive last month.

Golden State Warriors beat Celtics to win fourth NBA title in eight seasons
The Golden State Warriors headed into TD Garden on Thursday night and beat the Boston Celtics 103-90, to win the 2022 NBA finals. Their Game 6 victory was a dominant performance in hostile territory highlighted by an early 21-0 run which effectively secured the Warriors their fourth championship in the last eight years.
The contest had looked very different early on. The Celtics began the game by going on a 14-2 tear, and they briefly looked like they would force a decisive Game 7 in San Francisco. But the Warriors countered with a run of their own, eventually ending the first quarter with a five-point lead. Things would escalate from there. The Warriors held Boston scoreless for the first two minutes of the second quarter as Golden State rained three-pointers down on their hapless opponents. By the time the blitz was over, the Warriors had put together a 21-0 streak, the biggest such run in the finals in 50 years. The Celtics, meanwhile, were forced to hope they had one more dramatic comeback in them.
By halftime, the Celtics were down 15 points, a not insurmountable task given their track record of comebacks in these playoffs. The Warriors, however, refused to budge. A Stephen Curry three halfway through the third quarter gave them a 22-point lead that effectively ended the game and secured Curry the first finals MVP award of a career that will end with his enshrinement in the Hall of Fame.

Netherlands vs England LIVE: Cricket score and updates from ODI in Amsterdam
Follow live coverage of Netherlands vs England from Amsterdam.
Phil Salt opened alongside Jason Roy for England in their first one-day international against the Netherlands, with the visitors opting for an all left-arm fast bowling attack. Jonny Bairstow’s Test duties have precluded his involvement for this three-match series in Amstelveen, a suburb to the south west of Amsterdam, so Salt comes in with Dawid Malan at first drop.
Salt was pressed into action immediately as Dutch captain Pieter Seelaar won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sam Curran, David Willey and Reece Topley make up the seam attack, with Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone expected to supplement the spin of frontliner Adil Rashid. The hosts, meanwhile, left out Tom Cooper but Philippe Boissevain and Shane Snater were included in the XI.

Tyson Fury insists he is still retired just hours after Oleksandr Usyk vow
Tyson Fury has made a U-turn on his U-turn by insisting he will not fight again - hours after admitting he was willing to take on Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury initially announced his retirement following his stoppage win over Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April but this week revealed he is willing to return for an undisputed fight - at the right price. But the undefeated Brit has backtracked once again to claim he will only pull on a pair of gloves for an exhibition bout.
"As far as I'm concerned I'm happily retired; happy and content with my career," he told Good Morning Britain. "Never say never, but as far as I'm concerned, me and professional boxing are kaput. Enough is enough, I'm happy to do the showbiz side of boxing." Few people believe Fury will remain retired with even his wife and dad admitting they expect to see him in the ring again. And on Tuesday he appeared to give the green light to the long-awaited heavyweight showdown with either Joshua or Usyk.
