Over 1,500 years ago, the people of ancient western Mexico made this ceramic figure showing a dancer wearing a removable crocodile helmet. Created by the Colima culture between 300 BC and 300 AD, it tells a story of ritual, power, and transformation — and today, it quietly watches over visitors at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
The Colima were part of a group of cultures in what’s now western Mexico, known for their highly detailed red clay sculptures. These weren’t just decorations — they were buried with the dead, believed to protect or guide them in the afterlife. Figures like this dancer likely had a deeper meaning, symbolizing spiritual strength, connection to animals, or even preparation for battle or ceremony.
The crocodile helmet is what makes this piece truly special. In many ancient Mesoamerican cultures, crocodiles were sacred creatures, connected to water, earth, and the underworld. Wearing one as a mask or helmet may have meant taking on the power of the animal — not unlike how warriors and shamans dressed to connect with the gods. The fact that it’s removable? That hints at performance, ritual drama, or transformation — a human becoming something more.

there should be a such thing as a medical detective. you should be able to hire a doctor to figure out what the fuck is going on with you come hell or high water by consulting whatever specialists they can get their hands on, connecting your constellation of symptoms, etc, instead of 10000 different doctors for every distinct bone in ur body that all just kinda go "dang that sucks idk" when you present with more than one fucking symptom

So there’s this artist, Alex Schaefer, who makes a bunch of paintings of Chase Bank burning.
Tumblr media
There’s just
Tumblr media
so many of these
Tumblr media
and I think it’s incredibly funny but
Tumblr media
I just read this bit from the artist and
This is a "plein air" painting which means I set up my easel right across the street of this Chase bank in my city and painted it like it had caught fire. The police questioned me on the spot. Three weeks later Homeland Security was knocking on the door to my home. The question they kept asking me was "Do you hate these banks?" I can honestly say yes.
And I just think this is the greatest artist statement I’ve ever read.

Say you break your ankle. You could know everything there is to know intellectually about the injury. Even with this vast knowledge, you will still experience physical pain.
Now take this logic and apply it to things like ADHD, autism, clinical depression, and other less visible/divergent disabilities. You cannot think your way out of feeling.
That is to say: you are not a bad, lazy, or selfish person for struggling, even if you know why you are struggling.
