Lithuanian Charm for Banishing Sickness
Early, I wake, With bitter dew, I wash, To the sun, I address myself, I glorify God. Sicknesses facing me, Go in the dry trees, The deep swamps, There where no man walks, There where no animal wades, There where no bird flies.

Hey witchblr, I’ve got a question
Does anyone know why black pepper (just the seasoning) corresponds with banishing and protection and stuff?
I really like researching into the folklore and histories of plants, herbs, crystals, etc. to find out why they’re said to correspond with what they do. However because black pepper was considered such a luxury until like, the 16th-17th century I think? it wasn’t something just anybody could regularly get ahold of before then and therefore there isn’t really much folklore behind it (from what I’ve been able to find anyway).
So yeah, does anyone know any historical basis or folklore behind it’s correspondences or is it something people just kind of came to the conclusion of based on the color correspondences for black in general or something?

Ostara is a stolen Christian holiday.
Before that certain audience brings out the persecution complex, I will explain. Firstly, the holiday within the wheel of the year, Ostara, was created in the 1970s. It is neither ancient nor a revived pagan holiday. Easter itself is a thousand and more years older than “Ostara.” Easter also varies locally between countries and denominations.
The goddess supposedly venerated during this holiday, Eostre, is most likely a fabrication. She is only attested by the Christian author Bede. Eostre is not the only goddess he fabricated, but that’s not the point for today. With Eostre likely never have existed — there is no way to truthfully claim that Christians stole Ostara. To do so is ahistorical. She is also definitely not a Celtic deity, as Eostre is Anglo-Saxon. Easter’s date is also not consistent as it varies depending upon denomination. While Ostara is consistently around the equinox, Easter is dependent upon the moon. It is impossible say that Christians stole the date of Ostara.
Any associations of Eostre with eggs, bunnies, renewal, etc are all ahistorical pseudohistory. Myths surrounding Eostre associating her with those were also fabricated in the 19th and 20th centuries. These associations also stem from Easter, and not paganism. By taking Christian imagery and applying it to a pagan deity who likely never existed, they are stealing from Christianity. I have even seen cases of pagans saying that chocolate bunnies are associated with Eostre/Ostara. Ostara as a pagan holiday is largely stolen from Christianity. The associations of rabbits, renewal, rebirth, etc all stem from Christianity and post-Christianisation folklore. I have seen pagans literally take Easter products/imagery and say they’re “actually pagan” and attribute them to a likely fabricated goddess. That isn’t syncretism: that’s just straight up stealing. Many approach this holiday as a pagan Easter. Considering the stolen status of literally everything in this holiday, it is. Ostara is a stolen Christian holiday — an ahistorical, pagan Easter.
If you really love Easter that much, just go celebrate it. Commit a christopaganism from time to time. Many pagans are strung up in false narratives of persecution and “stolen holidays”, but they have no issue with stealing from Christianity and calling it “actually pagan” when needed.  I’m not saying celebrating the holiday is bad or anything, but please. Stop it with the ahistorical narratives. Celebrating the equinox is cross-cultural and you don’t need the wheel to do that. And if you do use the wheel, just know it’s problems.
@bean-na-farraige-agus-foraoise, would you like to elaborate/give your thoughts on this? I wrote this at 1 am so lmao.

Just a reminder: Heathenry does have a term for smoke-cleansing. Recaning. To recan. (Or reocan, in Old West Saxon.) This is cleansing via smoke, whether through incense or a bundle of herbs put together for a particular type of cleansing. Juniper and mugwort are both favorites for this. In case you’re wondering how to pronounce it, it sounds like reekening. The word “reeks” is actually derived from it, signifying a potent smell. For Old Norse fans, this seems to be related to the work reykr. In case you were wondering, Reykjavik in Iceland translates to “Smoky Bay”.

Witchcraft 101 - Ingredients you probably have but never thought to use:
Plain, basic, normal rocks. Use them to mark a circle. Paint sigils on them and place them accordingly. Tie something you want gone from your life (metaphorically - like a picture of your ex or a gift from a toxic friend) to the rock and put it into a body of water, where it'll sink.
Glass. Being transparent (most of the time), glass can be used to aid in revealing the truth and seeing past lies, unrealistic ideas, and idealized aspects of your life.
Your shower. Yeah, we talk about ritual baths frequently, but showers can serve a similar but unique purpose. With a shower, you can visualize and manifest whatever it is you need pouring down onto you, and whatever it is you want to get rid of being rinsed and sucked down the drain.
Anything you can wear on your person - makeup, clothes, jewelry (even your hair if you wanna go that way). Color correspondence is talked about a lot in the community, but usually in reference to things you keep around you, not things you keep on you or carry with you.
Yeah, I know this one is a little short today, but I wanted to get another one of these out and I'm not feeling the best today. Feel free to give me further witchcraft 101 topic suggestions.

Hello witchy friends and divination enthusiasts! In honor of the upcoming full moon, I thought I would put together some info on the spread I most often use for this moon phase. Since I know not everyone will resonate with all of the cards in this spread, I’ve included some info on alternative cards you can add or use to replace others so your reading can be completely customized to what you want and need. Get creative with your spreads and don’t be afraid to come up with your own! 🌕
As always you can book readings on my website or my Etsy page or you’re welcome to chat with me here or on Instagram. 🔮

Progress.
The nice thing about doing this kind of work in so many layers is that the lines and placements get refined each time, slowly approaching a cleaner look. I never expect perfect symmetry working by hand, the little differences in each symbol are proof of my hand and will, putting more soul into the work.

Witches of Tumblr, what are your go to books about herbs/plants/flowers?
Yesterday I learned my backyard is home to purple ground ivy and its place within herbal witchcraft and herbal medicine was fascinating so I want to continue this journey. Obviously I know a few herbs and plants that are good for certain things but I really want to educate myself deeply!
I was looking into the Green Witch but really all and any suggestions are welcome for a beginner such as myself.
