Listen I understand the humor behind “oh yes this smut shot is definitely necessary as a character study, the way they suck dick is integral to understanding them as a person” but like also……this is not incorrect!! You can do a lot in literature with various narrative devices, including and especially sex! Your character study is not less poignant just because it’s framed through the lens of sex! Sex has been used historically in literature as a way to explore character and plot and narrative themes and I just think we’re missing out on a lot if we dismiss anything smutty out of hand instead of giving it the credit it deserves for being one of the most useful storytelling devices of all time.

Do you ever get reminded of that one really intense longfic that you had every intention of writing and had meticulous notes and complicated outlines for but then something happened and you aren't in the fandom anymore and you still have the desire to write the fic but it's slightly hollow now because it's a good idea and you think it would have been a great fic but you haven't been in the fandom for literally years and you don't have that bit of passion for it that you did when you were writing it and have just a weird moment of nostalgia where you want to reread it but it never existed

Lesser-known steps of the writing process:
Finding all the paragraphs where you used some hyper-specific word more than once
Rearranging paragraphs that you swear you wrote in the right order but turned out to be totally backwards
Going for a walk, coming up with the perfect line, and forgetting it as soon as you get home and open your laptop
Creating a separate document where you can dump all of those nice sentences that no longer fit in anywhere
Waking up in a cold sweat because so-and-so was supposed to be barefoot but never actually took his shoes off

These 70s gay pulp novel covers have a serious aesthetic going on. These are like, a legitimate example of good cover design. Every one tells you what you're going to get inside, but also has common design elements that tie them all together as a series. And those common elements are surprisingly elegant. They could have put the title in big bold text at the top, but they decided to make the title understated and put it off to the side in vertical alignments with the series, number, and author.
Additional detail: The title typeface is Clarendon, for those with an obsessive interest in typefaces.
