I know you mean well, or feel like this is a statement. It’s really not; it’s performance activism or slacktivism. Your friends and family who have remained silent saw this as an easy way to do their part. Nothing has changed. Nothing actually acknowledged. Earlier today I expressed my discontent with the silence from the ”community” of crossfit. I didn't expect much from the large corporation, but from my local box I mistakenly expected more. I reached out and asked why no statement was made about police brutality and the explicit murder of black lives (what I view as the bare minimum, especially from an organization who claims to value community.) Responses remained tone deaf. I no longer see a place for me there and wanted to cancel my membership. In speaking with leadership, an individual had requested a memorial WOD for George Floyd. But the response from leadership was “programming has already been set for the week” and “i’ll try to add it or some other tribute wod in” as if it were a chore. Leadership continued with “just a non-political white dude who owns a business with all kinds of people and different beliefs.” That he’s always treated me well and has gone-out-of-his-way to talk to me at the gym. “I’m not the enemy.” He requested a call to solicit my advice on what people like him should be doing without himself doing research. A defensive and weak response. Miraculously, a statement has been made and still manages to say nothing at all. It's a “coexist” sticker. It’s a business move to save face. This picture represents everyone up in arms about the quarantine and having to wear a mask. Demanding salons, gyms, restaurants, and travel be open immediately. Angry white open carry “protest”. Fighting for brunch while WE are fighting for our lives. This isn’t about property damage to businesses that have insurance, but that’s the closest you’ve come to acknowledging or speaking about what is happening. Anything you say before “but” is meaningless. Fuck all the whataboutisms. The business I’ve supported, alleged friends and acquaintances who remained silent. I understand you might be uncomfortable or unsure of what to do. You don’t want to alienate your “conservative” clientele. You have made an abundantly clear choice.
