I saw a lot of people in Los Angeles whose lives were the film industry—they were brought up in the film industry—and they didn’t really have a proper understanding of how the world worked outside of the film industry. I realized very quickly that’s not what I wanted. My job is to portray real human beings and real human experiences, and if I haven’t had a real human experience myself outside of the film industry, how am I going to be able to do that?
