Deep water channel (2022), collodion chloride print 8x10
Some streaks in this print, not from the negative. Using Yupo because I’m not set up to harden gelatin quite yet, it does a great job but the longer the CC bottle is open the less room for error there is in the pour (video shows the coating of an earlier print).

Now I've always been the kind of person
That doesn't like to trespass but sometimes
You just find yourself over the line.

My second iteration of “Sentinels” came about somewhat unexpectedly. My folks moved to Mexico a while back, Nuevo Nayarit as it’s called now specifically, long story. Anyway we went for a visit and I brought my point-and-shoot and 3 rolls. Having been pretty fixated on trees from years past (the first Sentinels in Iowa from 2017-20), and a new crop I’ve been shooting near home, I pretty much stuck to it.
I’ve always loved taking pictures from the car going way back, but never with a specific subject, and most of what I have are non-specific blurs, too distant, too reflexive, or so I thought. Basically I had no expectations, which is not to say I wasn’t paying attention or trying, I just slipped into some kind of flow and presence. When I saw the negatives I felt that same energy could be extended by the results, and having not made a book in quite awhile I just immediately pivoted over into production mode.
This is one of those not-a-zine-but-kinda books. Laser printed and half-letter sized. Sewn and bound with care, a double-pamphlet with spine guards and cover weighted front and back covers in various combinations of 4 colored papers (3 per book). I wasn’t asking “why.” I spent 2 years doing that and it got me precisely nowhere. I made 30, and though I may eventually print these images in the darkroom I don’t expect to come back to these 18 photographs outside of the way they’re organized here. If anything, it’ll push me to make more of these small efforts going forward, which is a W. I think you should do it, too. Do it with something close but small. Then do another. It’s already paid for itself through sales and enough for the next (that’s not a guarantee).
It’s been a long time since I used this account, or tumblr at all for years. But looking for something else now, and thought I’d give this another go. I won’t dump like this all the time, but I know I would rather do it here than in between being hypnotized by unsolicited woodworking videos or whatever else I get served up because they know my eyeball movements and pause durations. Anyway, hello again!

Icewalks is available to purchase from my site. Hand bound edition of 10. Learn more and see the book at www.marklanningjr.com/icewalks-edition, already half sold! $55 shipping included (international additional $). Contact me by email on the site to purchase a copy. icewalks was shot in winter 2017/18 in Iowa City, looking largely at plastic items held in the ice. When the ice was at its thickest, I would walk out to find what I could. The book was bound with peculiar materials that reference the subject, and the effect of each cover, back board, and spine is unique. Browse each cover on the site, note which you’d like and I’ll reserve that copy for you to be shipped!

Print sale! To help fund an upcoming road trip I’m doing a short-run print sale. This helped me immensely when I shot “Black Hills,” now I’m traveling to Ohio to mount an exhibition of that work. The prints are all framed and ready to go, monies in line... now I’m just looking to pad the gas and film fund. Work prints from many of my projects are included in this sale at $35 each, free shipping on orders of two or more with the code OHIO, and PICKUP for local sales (Sacramento or Bay Area) I can deliver myself. This sale will end the first week of July, thanks for your support!
These prints and more available at:

15 Minutes, 2014
Finally adding this into the mix for the next Black Hills show. This was shot during Sturgis, so driving around I was just swarmed by bikes. I was trying to figure out how to include the bikes without them simply showing up here and there, so I pulled over, stuck the camera out the window, and shot for about 15 minutes. These 84 come from a set of 125. Print will be 20x30.

Frank (Frank-er), 2016
Testing some outdated 8x10 film, decided to do some portraits with a white seamless background. The reference is obvious. Not sure exactly how I’ll use the film now that I know it’s good - maybe I’ll work it in to a project I’ve been working on lately - but I’m glad to have the 8x10 out of its box on the shelf.
