Since I was left off the mailing list and was therefore unable to register for any PD workshops, I chose to read a book instead.

What does the tech teacher do when the board's entire network crashes?
Read the PD book she's had in her bag for months.

This is a little skint on details, but still good for thought.

Again, we as a society need to discuss the implications of this.
Those of us who work in education need to do this also. Because this is a game changer.

Worked with two students today who reminded me why Assistive Technology so important. Both have struggled for years in the system. One has developed some negative coping strategies. But both of them today showed me some work they had finished with the AT tools. Both were so proud of themselves. They were also more engaged in their education.
And they were happy.
I am not saying it's a panacea. But when it is the right tool, it really is a game changer.

Sometimes the world is dark, but we need to stop and recognize the progress we have made. This is one of them.

Call for Interviewees about Assistive Tech - November 2022
Hi, everyone! I’m a current Masters of Public Health student at the University at Albany School of Public Health. For our Community Based Public Health class, students are required to do a group project interviewing members of a community.
I am an ambulatory wheelchair user who also uses a bunch of other assistive technology. I suggested to my group that we interview individuals about their experiences obtaining and using assistive technology.
We are currently seeking volunteers for interviews who are willing to speak about their experiences with obtaining and using assistive tech, which may include wheelchairs and other mobility devices but also things like grabbers/graspers/grippers, screen readers, specialty computer equipment, vehicle modifications, and “low-tech” things like special pens/pencils, etc. The interviews will be held online, using Zoom, and will last about 20-30 minutes,
As this is not for research or publication purposes (just a paper that will be handed in to our instructor), these interviews are exempt from IRB requirements. However, standard ethical practices such as confidentiality, informed consent, and the ability of participants to withdraw at any time will be followed. In addition, we ask for participants age 18 and over who live in the United States (any state is fine!). This project is being carried out under the supervision of professor Dawn Bleyenburg.
If you are interested, please e-mail me at [email protected] and let me know your general availability. If schedules work out, I’ll match you with one (or two) of my fellow group members for an interview. We’re looking to interview 5-10 folks. Of course, if you have general questions, feel free to comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!
As a note, this is an unfunded project so we do not have additional funds for translators. We do, however, have a group member who speaks Spanish fluently so we can offer interviews in either Spanish or English.

There are days in education you eat the candy.
Without releasing confidential information, today was that day.

Stop expecting students to know how to use a tool or complete a task. Chances are they have never had explicit instruction, which is why they are struggling.
Teach them to do anything you want them to do. Be prepared to do that repeatedly.

So, to make a non-antagonistic post.
The idea that proper spelling and needing to have perfect grammar is a prerequisite to having a point or argument or is somehow inherintly better is ableist
The point of language is communication of thoughts and ideas. If there is confusion, ask for clarification. If there is no confusion, great you got it!
Its really that simple

Watched this tonight because my son came home raving about it after his geography teacher used it to help illustrate some issues facing Northern communities.
It is a remarkable movie but it also served to illustrate how a teacher can affect more than just their students.
