How hearing aids work

This is intended as a writing guide, but anyone is welcome to read it to learn more about the different aids used by deaf people.

Please remember that these are based off my experience as somebody who was born deaf in the uk. Other deaf people will have vastly different experiences, and I would encourage you to look up other guides like this

Hearing aids are not always available, particularly if you live in a country without free healthcare. They can be very expensive, both to buy and to take care of

If your character is a deaf child or young teenager, they will need new hearing aid moulds every so often as their ears grow. This only involves going to the hospital for a few hours, and isn't really a big deal. You can get different colours of mould, sometimes sparkly ones, or with tiny embedded designs

Hearing aids cannot get wet, so we take them off to shower, swim, etc. We also take them off to sleep

Hearing aids do not fix hearing loss, and many deaf people still need to lipread and use sign language while wearing them. Please don't try to compare them to glasses!

Some people choose not to wear hearing aids at all, which is a perfectly reasonable and valid decision. Sometimes it is too overwhelming to be exposed to so much noise, sometimes people just prefer to sign or use other non-verbal communication

Not all people with hearing aids know or use sign language

If your character is wearing hearing aids for the first time, they will probably become a lot clumsier while they get used to it

That's all I can think of for now! To any hearing writers reading this, I'm glad you're making an effort to write diverse characters thoughtfully and respectfully!

Yes Dazai fell first but at this point the pining is mutual they're just both idiots.

I really dislike how so many people write Chuuya's pining to be like...sort of pathetic? Like his world revolves around Dazai etc etc and how Dazai takes advantage of that and ooh there's that angst-

Chuuya's pining is like. Chuuya has all these feelings that he's stuffing in a big black box labeled "Dazai's bullshit" that he wants to set on fire. But the feelings keep spilling over the sides and getting in the way inconveniently and it's all shitty Dazai's fault and Chuuya really fucking hates him.

Because what Chuuya is, really, is afraid. Like Dazai is afraid. Because confronting those feelings, aknowledging them, admitting to them is admitting defeat, it's being vulnerable, it's baring a small, gentle part of him that Chuuya thought he lost long ago. It's saying I can be selfish. It's saying I get to choose. It's saying I have a soft spot for the aspects of me that I hate. It's saying I don't have to fight all the time, I can just be.

I just woke up but hear me out--

Chuuya came home late as usual but to find you not there in the house. Everything is dark inside the apartment. He thought you're still working at the agency but when he calls you, your phone is ringing on the coffee table.

At this point, Chuuya is getting worried. Did someone break in and kidnapped you? An assassin? Someone tries to get revenge on him, perhaps?

What he's going to do? Since his relationship with you will most likely will involve the companies both of you working at. You work at ADA and he's apart of PM, literally two rival companies that has been at it with each other for god knows how long. Will the two of you forced to be on seperate ways once your bosses found out about your secret relationship?

No..He doesn't want to lose you just like that. He likes you. He adores you. Both of you agree on this relationship together because you both love each other so much that it makes your neighbours sick when the two of you being lovey dovey in monthly apartment neighbour meetings .

He immediately turn on the living room lights. Maybe there's a secret message of your disappearance somewhere, right?

Once the lights are on, he met with something frightening--

BOO!

There you are, inside a big white blanket that you ordered last week just for the sake of this ordeal, hugging him in surprise. He's going to admit, it does scare him to the point he almost activate his ability but you have to take the god that he didn't.

"Did I scare you?" You chuckled, still hugging him. "..No." He lied as he let out a sigh of relief. You're not in danger or in harm.

"Liar! Your heartbeat is racing!" You received a chuckle from your boyfriend. "Maybe you did, doll" He said, removing you from the blanket, revealing you with your messy hair thanks to it.

He smiles softly and kisses your forehead.

"You're going to be the death of me if you do that again, you know that?"
