TAB Minutes 2.27.18
Call to Order: 6:04 PM Roll Call: Cole, Abby, Sam, Lily, Erin, Scott, Aria, Serenata | 8 Members Present
Approval of last month’s minutes: Motion to approve by Scott; Seconded by Cole
Advisor’s Report: Ashlee is continuing to work on the Summer Reading Program. More programs will be cemented by next meeting. As always, TAB members are invited to run/come up with a program. In addition, Ashlee will bepresenting at the Wisconsin Area Public Library Conference about the SPARK program. TAB also hopes to start involving more NIS/Middle Schoolers in the library, especially since 6 TAB members will be graduating this Spring. Finally, the Spark Buddies program (a four week program where teens are paired with younger kids to do STEAM related activities) will start up again on Monday, April 6.
President’s Report: Erin attended the adult board meeting, where they discussed the new SHARED program and SPARKlers program (programs for all ages - collect up to 10 buttons for different STEAM tasks).
Vice President’s Report: N/a
Review of TAB applications: TAB reviewed Zach Martin’s application. He was unanimously voted onto the board.Discussion and possible action on establishing Library Lope registration costs: TAB tossed around the idea of making the Library Lope cheaper than other local runs, but decided to keep the price the same as previous years. TAB hopes to start posting posters in schools through April/May, as well as post on running sites ASAP.
Discussion and possible action on Library Lope sponsorships: TAB currently has $400 in the Lope fund, bringing up the discussion of asking for more money from businesses. Members decided to send out a letter again to the businesses who have donated in previous years, but only ask for donations of under $100.
Discussion and possible action on Library Lope finish line: TAB unanimously decided to invest in two finishing ling flags. Each flag would cost $160, and final designs would be available next meeting. TAB would also like to add a “streamer” as a finish line for people to run through and recruit the Middle School Art Club to potentially make cartoon-themed signs for along the route.
Discussion of Summer Reading Program experiences: The library would like to start offering “experiences” as prizes for the Summer Reading Program. Potential experiences include riding in a firetruck, a pizza/nerf war party, and coffee with Ashlee at the Mitchell Coffee House. Proposed experiences include tickets to KL Escape Rooms, laser tag, breakfast at Tasty Bites/Milton Family Restaurant, movie tickets, skype with an author, and coffee with a group of librarians.
TAB t-shirts: The order will be placed next week. The majority voted for a white logo. The price is estimated to be roughly $16.
Volunteer Opportunity: Cardboard City: On Thursday/Friday during Spring Break (end of March), cardboard boxes will be placed in library and people can make whatever they’d like. Ashlee needs people to volunteer for 2 hr time slots between 10am-6pm. She will send out a Doodle sign up to TAB before opening the opportunity to other teens. Additional Comments: Discussion of a Roaring “20s” theme event to raise money for TAB/Library. Potential activities include an outdoor movie, a murder mystery/haunted themed escape room (which ultimately leads to finding the password to a Speakeasy in library basement - mocktails, movies, music, etc.). TAB should come with more ideas next meeting. TAB could also potentially do a trip to the Janesville Escape Room as a “bonding”/fun event.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, March 20, at 6:00 p.m. (week earlier because of Spring Break)
Adjournment: 6:44 PM

TAB Minutes 1.23.18
Call to Order: 6:00 p.m.
Roll Call: Taylor, Kris, Cole, Marilla, Collin, Sean, Scott | 7 member present
Approval of last month’s minutes: Motioned by Cole; seconded by Scott
Advisor’s Report: Study hours last week was a relative success; 7 the first night, 21 the second, 2 the third night. If the library plans on doing it again, perhaps we will only do the first two nights of exam week. The transition to the new library computer system and catalog is going well. You can now access 28 libraries. Lit Club (at the high school) will be holding a movie night on Thursday, February 8, from 4:00 to 6:00 as part of the high school’s Winter Week. We’ll be showing The Book Thief.
President’s Report: President unavailable
Vice President’s Report: Tim did not follow through on the appeal process and is no longer a member of TAB. (See additional comments for continued discussion on TAB vacancy.)
Congrats, Sean! Sean has graduated from high school early. Per TAB decision a few months back, he is able to stay on TAB until the term ends in August.
Discussion and possible action on outdoor movie programs: Travis had mentioned in his TAB application that we should do a film screening or film festival at the library. Erin, Marilla, and Taylor were discussing the possibility at the Nerf party. Research needs to be done about movie licensing and the ability to show outdoor movies. Cost can become an issue. Scott proposed the motion to form a subcommittee to explore the feasibility of hosting an outdoor movie program. The motion passed unanimously.
Volunteer Opportunity: Cardboard City: The library will be hosting a Cardboard City program in The SPARK during the last two days of Spring Break (March 29 and 30). Various cardboard boxes and pieces will be put into The SPARK and participants can come in and make whatever they want. However, sharp objects will be involved and I would like to have some kind of supervision. Shifts will be 2-3 hours. This is open to TAB members first; and then other high school students.
Possible ordering of TAB t-shirts: TAB members will be given two options: TAB logo in white on the pocket, or TAB logo in black on the pocket. TAB will be on the back. Shirts will be light blue. A survey will be sent out so you can let Ashlee know your size. Once Ashlee has received all the sizes, t-shirts will FINALLY be ordered. Let Ashlee know if you’d like to volunteer.
Additional Comments: TAB has a vacancy. Ashlee would like to see that spot filled by a Middle School student. She will contact Heidi Zweifel at the Middle School library first to see if she has anyone that she recommends. Members also decided that we’ll open up the April meeting to anyone who is interested in becoming a part of TAB in September when we lose 5 members. They can sit in and see how a meeting is run. We’ll accept applications until the June meeting and decide who the new members will be. These new members will shadow the exiting seniors during the July and August meetings, and become official members in September.
Kris mentioned that we should advertise our meetings better. They are open to the public and anyone is welcome to attend to observe and make comments if they wish.
Marilla brought up that the Rock County jail is looking for paperback books to add to their collection.
Ashlee would like us to start thinking about the Library Lope. We need to start making decisions on what we want to do the same and differently. Ashlee would like awards for the fastest males and females for both races. And we need to look into getting a better finish line.
The Spatula City video was viewed.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, February 27, at 6:00 p.m.
Adjournment: 6:39 p.m.

TAB Minutes 12.29.17
Call to Order: 5:14 PM
Roll Call: Cole, Abby, Kris, Scott, Marilla, Sam, Erin, Travis, Taylor, Serenata, Aria | 11 Members Present
Approval of Last Month’s Minutes: Approved by Kris; Seconded by Scott
Advisor’s Report: The library will be starting new hours next week, so TAB will have to change meeting dates. TAB decided to move meetings to every 4th Tuesday of the month at 6pm. In addition, the new library system will be in place starting January 11. Any library card (both new and already in circulation) will be valid at libraries in Racine/Kenosha area.
President’s Report: Erin attended last month’s Library Board meeting. The library picked out the gazebo and mapped out the basic design for the future Storybook Garden. Fundraising will start once the library is paid off.
Vice President’s Report: Everyone is accounted for “attendance-wise” except one member (Tim). TAB voted in favor of his removal from the board. Unless he decides to appeal to the board, a new position will be open.
Review of the Non-Profit Summit: Local youth groups and churches sent teen members to represent their organizations and discuss teen leadership/volunteering in the community. They discussed possibly holding another summit. TAB discussed starting an advisory committee for the city, featuring a single member representing each local nonprofit.
Continued discussion of TAB T-shirts: The vote to move the decision to next meeting was overturned (5-4, two additional members arrived after the vote). It was unanimously decided to purchase a light blue shirt with the TAB logo on the pocket and “TAB” written on the back.
Additional Comments: Disney rejected TAB’s request to use Disney characters as the 2018 Library Lope theme. The theme will now be “favorite cartoon characters.”

TAB Minutes 11.21.17
Call to Order: 6:02 PM
Roll Call: Erin, Scott, Cole, Sam, Taylor, Abby, Marilla, Tim, Kris, Lily | 10 Members Present
Approval of Last Month’s Minutes: Approved by Kris; Seconded by Scott
Advisor’s Report: The Literacy Club at Milton High School is still “chugging along” (similar to last year). Members of Lit Club plan to hold a book sale during the first full week in December, with all funds being donated to the ALA Disaster Relief Fund. Books (new/good condition) will be for sale for $1 during mornings and lunch periods. The Teen Magazine is coming along with 10 submissions so far. The magazine will be put together in December. TAB members are encouraged to spread the word/try and get more submissions. The first publication will be in January.
President’s Report: Erin didn’t attend last month’s Library Meeting, but Kris attended in her place. She, Kris, and Aria will be attending the four hour Non-Profit Summit next week (November 30).
Vice President’s Report: Attendance is decent, no major concerns. TAB is averaging about one absence per meeting. Kris attended the Library Meeting in Erin’s place last month. They continued to discuss merging with the ILS (Integrated Library System). Benefits include access to 21 other libraries, text message notifications, and the option to join favorite author clubs.
Continued discussion of TAB end-of-the-year party: The library will supply pizza. Members are encouraged to bring in food/snacks and nerf guns. A “White Elephant” gift exchange will take place. Items are to be wrapped in “neutral” wrap, such as newspapers or brown bags (no holiday paper). All gifts should cost between $5-10. The gift exchange is optional; if someone doesn’t bring a gift, (s)he won’t participate. The party/meeting will be Dec. 29 @ 5PM.
Discussion and possible action on Library Lope 2018 theme: TAB would like to do a Disney theme, however, using the name brand might violate copyright. Ashlee explained the situation to in Disney help/question forum. The response will be received in 6-8 weeks. TAB’s first choice would be a Disney theme, but if that is not possible, the Library Lope theme will be favorite cartoon/animated characters (essentially suggesting Disney without saying the name). The vote was unanimous.
Discussion of 2018 programs: The library will be open late to students during exams. TAB is working on contacting teachers/tutors to help students. Snacks, board games, a 3D printer, and a yoga room will be available to students. In addition, the “Little Owl, Wise Owl” program will start its winter session in December. Teen volunteers will be needed to help run the program. Other upcoming programs include an anime and candy sushi program, an improvisational acting class, and a self defense class. Potential programs include a financial literacy class and a dorm/room decorating class.
Continued discussion of TAB t-shirts: Erin will email Aria to set up another t-shirt meeting. Members are STRONGLY encouraged to bring in designs, as a final decision will be made next meeting. December 29 @ 4:30 PM could be a potential t-shirt committee meeting.
Next Meeting: December 29, 5-7 PM

TAB Minutes 10.24.17
Call to Order: 6:02 p.m.
Roll Call: Sam, Cole, Serenata, Aria, Kris, Scott, Erin, Marilla
Approval of last month’s minutes: Motioned to approve by Scott; seconded by Marilla
Advisor’s Report: The library will be changing hours starting January 2018. Monday and Tuesday will stay the same (10:00 to 8:00). The hours on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be 10:00 to 6:00. This cuts two hours from Wednesday but adds an hour to Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday will stay the same. Fine rates will also be changing in January. DVDs and adult items will be 25 cents a day; children and YA items will be 10 cents a day. No more grace period. The teen literary magazine has also started. A team of 5 students have named it The Iris. The library is already receiving submissions.
President’s Report: Nothing to report. Ashlee covered it.
Vice President’s Report: No updates on attendance at this time.
T-shirt Committee Report: The committee did not meet, therefore there is no report.
Treasurer’s Report: One of the disaster relief funds was no longer available, so only $300 of the $450 was donated. Ashlee put the remaining balance into the Library Lope fund for now. That $150 may be used for a charitable donation at another time.
Discussion of TAB end-of-the-year party: TAB would once again like to have an afterhours nerf war and gift exchange. This will most likely happen during the week of Winter Break, December 25-January 2. A date will be decided at the next meeting. TAB MEMBERS, PLEASE CHECK YOUR SCHEDULES.
Discussion and possible action on Library Lope 2018 theme: Abby had suggested a Disney theme. TAB liked this idea, but Ashlee needs to look into the legality of using Disney in advertising and such. Kris suggested that at the 2018 Library Lope we have 3-4 theme options available for the 2019 Library Lope and participants can vote on which theme we use.
Review and possible action on approving updated Bylaws: Changes were made to term periods. A term now runs September to August. Seniors who graduate in June (or graduate earlier) may finish their term through August. Motion to approve by Scott, seconded by Aria: passed with 7-1 vote. An additional change was made to the Secretary duties. Bylaws state that the Secretary is responsible for maintaining an attendance sheet; that duty has previously been moved to the Vice President. That line has been taken out of the Secretary description. Motion to approve by Scott, seconded by Kris (?); passed with 8-0 vote.
Additional Comments: None
Guest Speaker: Kris Koeffler: Kris Koeffler is putting together a summit to gather together all the non-profit organizations. She wants to make available information on volunteer opportunities for youth in the hopes of giving them – more specifically, troubled youth – in the area a way to become better community members. The summit is on Thursday, November 30, starting at 8:30 a.m. The first part will be the different organizations giving brief presentations on the types of volunteer opportunities they have. The second part of the summit will involve a panel that will include area youth. Kris would like 2 representatives from TAB to be on that panel to talk about their experiences volunteering and give insight into what challenges teens are facing in the community. She is further asking for 4 questions that could be asked at this summit either to those on the panel or during brainstorming sessions on how to improve community life for teens.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, November 21, at 6:00 p.m.
Adjournment: 7:02 p.m.

TAB Minutes 9.26.17
Call to Order: 6:01 pm
Roll Call: Sam, Cole, Scott, Erin, Kris, Abby, Marilla, Lily, Taylor | 9 Members Present
Approval of last month’s minutes: Motion to approve by Scott; Seconded by Cole
Advisor’s Report: As expected, the library has begun to slow down once school started (with more people showing up around 2:30pm). In addition, the Summer Reading Program was a huge success. Now, the library’s focus shifts toward the Storybook Garden as plans, fundraising, and hiring are discussed.
President’s Report: Erin attended last month’s Library Board meeting. For the Storybook garden, they discussed potentially creating a tunnel and including sensory/butterfly plants.
Vice President’s Report: Almost everyone’s attendance is accounted for, with the exception of only one or two members. Those members will be emailed after the meeting as to whether or not they still wish to be in TAB. Kris will also be attending the next Library Board meeting in place of Erin.
T-shirt Committee Report: Postponed to next month
Officer speeches and election: The nominees were as follows: Abby for Secretary, Kris for VP, and Erin and Aria for President (no members volunteered to run for PR). Abby won Secretary, Kris won VP, and Erin won President. It was suggested that TAB forms a committee to take over the PR position.
Library Lope review: TAB received a total of $525 from sponsors, and having spent $392.74 on supplies and headbands, a total of $132.26 was left to be spent next year or donated. The Library Lope had 82 total participants (75 participants the previous year), attracted more teens, and made a total of $1207.26. Everyone was pleased with how everything went, particularly with the new (lower maintenance) route and having the event start and stop at the library. Unfortunately, even though the trains were supposed to hold off until the event was over, some runners had to wait for trains, which will hopefully be fixed for next year. In addition, for next year, TAB hopes to involve the photographer again, as the pictures were considerably better than last year.
Discussion and possible action on distributing Library Lope money: TAB decided to move $206.26 to TAB funds and set aside the remaining $1,000 for charity. The $1,000 was then split 50/50, with 50% to support the library and 50% to support the victims of the recent hurricanes. The hurricane support money was donated to “One America,” a nonprofit charity fund created by former presidents. The distribution to charity was decided unanimously.
Discussion and possible action on scheduling Library Lope 2018: TAB decided to make the Library Lope an annual event on Labor Day, as no sports would be scheduled and most people would be off work. Library Lope 2018 falls on Sept. 3rd, 2018.
Discussion and possible action on retaining members who graduate early: TAB terms have now been changed to last from September to August. If someone were to graduate early, the rules stay the same (so if someone were to graduate in December, they would be able to stay in TAB until the end of August in that term). In addition, volunteering for the Library Lope will be entirely optional for graduated members, as TAB/Library is always looking for volunteers. Finally, applications for graduated members’ positions will be accepted over the summer and read in August. The vote to approve was 8 - 1.
Extended hours during exams: Extended hours will be offered to students during exams (the 3rd week in January and 1st/2nd week in June. Coffee and snacks will be offered. Students will need a school ID in order to get in. TAB members should spread the word around exam time and help out if necessary. An area will also be reserved for any teachers/mentors/tutors who would like to help out. TAB will also invite Ms. Marie Sroda to do a relaxation class during the event.
Review of TAB applications and possible action on adding a new member: Four applications were submitted and anonymously reviewed. The first vote has a 50/50 tie between candidates 1 and 4 (later revealed to be Andie S. and Travis L.). Another vote was taken, with Travis L. winning over Andie S., with a 75-25 vote.
Next Meeting: Monday, October 30th @ 6pm
Adjournment: 7:27 pm
