For real though, this kid has grown so so much and I am so proud of him.

When he goes to attempt to save Sasuke 2 chapters later, it's such a nice parallel to how Naruto saved him. He tells Sasuke "Hey, don't give in to darkness and hate. I know how you feel, I've been there, and I've learnt vengeance is not the right way. There must be something that gives you hope, if not in the past, then in the future. Follow that, before it's too late", and that is essentially exactly what Gaara himself did.

He was alone and consumed by hate because he felt like a monster - and then Naruto showed him that the monster inside him does not make him predestined for solitude and hatred. That you can find friendship despite it.

And when Gaara followed this example he found that even he could get a second chance, that he could protect the ones he cares about, that he can care about people and others will care about him, despite the monster in him, despite the fear and all-

So here, when he steps in to save Sasuke from the Raikage's blow, he doesn't do it to save Naruto's friend. He does it because he recognises his past self in Sasuke, and he wants to offer a second chance.

However, he is still the Kazekage, and bound to protect his people. Not just from Sasuke, but also from the dishonor of gossip to have a Kazekage who wouldn't act. So he does attack Sasuke in the end - even though it hurts.

But this fact that he cries for him, that he offered him a second chance at all - that means so much to me
